BACKGROUND: Injuries to the sternoclavicular (SC) joint typically occur with high-energy mechanisms such as those obtained in automobile accidents or contact sports. Many disorders of the SC joint can be treated nonoperatively. However, surgical treatment may be indicated for locked posterior dislocations; symptomatic, chronic instability; or persistent, painful osteoarthritis that fails nonoperative therapy.
PURPOSE: To provide an updated review on the current diagnosis and management of instability and degenerative arthritis of the SC joint.
STUDY DESIGN: Current concepts review.

A retrospective analysis of 15 cases of ankylosed temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstructed, with sternoclavicular joint graft (SCG), during the period 2002-2007 was undertaken. All cases were analyzed for functional adaptation of the graft, considering maximum interincisal opening, and protrusive and laterotrusive movement of the jaw. Significant improvement was noticed in all cases except one, although maximum improvement was seen 3-6 months postoperatively. Radiological evaluation was carried out at regular intervals for 2-3 years to assess the anatomical adaptation of the graft. No major

The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is an unusual site for septic arthritis in healthy people. It is mostly described as affecting intravenous drug abusers. We report a rare case of sternoclavicular osteo-arthritis caused by non-typhoid salmonella in an immunocompetent person. The patient presented with general weakness, dizziness, epigastric and anterior chest pain that had persisted for one week. Peptic ulcer disease was diagnosed by gastro-intestinal endoscopy. Computed tomography (CT) revealed fluid accumulation around the left sternoclavicular joint. Surgical exploration revealed pus, which w

Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is a rare condition speculated to be associated with some predisposing factors such as intravenous drug use, immunocompromised situations or chronic diseases. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first group reporting a case of SCJ septic arthritis after coronary angiography.

Treatment of AC joint injuries and SC joint injuries continues to evolve. The risk of complications of both the operative and nonoperative management of these injuries can be minimized by the treating physician if the physician thoroughly evaluates and understands the problem. Making an accurate diagnosis of the underlying pathology and then selecting the appropriate treatment for this will minimize the risk of an associated complication. Paying attention to detail and using the appropriate technique before any operative intervention is chosen will decrease the risk of failure and complication

Infectious arthritis of the sternoclavicular (SC) joint is a known complication of intravenous drug abuse. Most reported cases have been caused by gram-negative microorganisms. Patients with this form of septic arthritis usually have protracted illnesses and require both medical and surgical, therapy. During 18 months we saw four cases of SC septic arthritis cause by gram-positive microorganisms. Three cases were related to heroin use and Staphylococcus aureus was the causative organisms. Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated in the remaining patient. All patients had the abrupt onset of SC jo

A 73-year-old woman with long-standing therapy-refractory rheumatoid arthritis presented with a persistent fever. Chest computed tomography revealed a mass at the right sternoclavicular joint, growing from 33 × 15 mm to 48 × 44 mm over 8 months, with osteolysis and clavicular erosions. Differential diagnoses were rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, tuberculosis, and malignancy. Initial biopsy suggested lymphoid malignancy but was nondiagnostic due to necrosis. Rebiopsy indicated a benign lesion. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography ruled out cancer. The sternoclavicular joint

BACKGROUND: Traumatic sternoclavicular joint dislocations are rare; closed reduction is the primary treatment. The failure of closed reduction or a prominent insult to the skin may require surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.
METHODS: The records of 5 patients operated at our institution for sternoclavicular joint dislocation were reviewed. All patients were treated with open reduction and single 3.5-mm locking plate was used for fixation. Outcomes were evaluated with the Constant Shoulder Score (CSS) and Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Intraoperative a

Posterior dislocation of the clavicle is an uncommon injury, usually related to road traffic or contact sports accidents. The close proximity of vital structures in the mediastinum should alert the surgeon avoiding a closed reduction in the emergency setting. A multidisciplinary team of expert surgeons should be involved and a combined procedure performed. Nevertheless, the risk of developing complications is high. We report this case in order to outline one of the potential complications, to discuss appropriate imaging studies and to describe the details of a safe surgical approach.

UNLABELLED: Surgical treatment of sternoclavicular joint instability can be challenging and carries the inherent risk of damaging vital structures if the posterior capsule is violated during surgery. In the current manuscript, a novel and easy technique for open reduction and tendon graft stabilization of the unstable sternoclavicular joint is presented. Analogous to other techniques, the graft is passed through drill holes in a figure-of-eight configuration. However, for this technique, the drill holes are placed in oblique direction from the anterior cortex towards the articular surface of t

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the management of spontaneous sternoclavicular joint infection (SCJI). Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been widely accepted for SCJI. We reviewed our experience with the management of this condition comparing NPWT alone and NPWT combined with instillation and dwell time.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients with spontaneous SCJI treated in our thoracic unit.
RESULTS: From March 2008 to October 2019, 27 patients (21 men and 6 women) underwent NPWT combined with muscle flap transfer after necrosectomy and chest wall resection

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the treatment of the sternoclavicular joint dislocation by clavicular hook plate and investigate its clinical value to find a therapy with more safety and stability.
METHODS: Between January 2003 and January 2007, 15 patients with sternoclavicular joint dislocation were involved, among whom there were 12 males and 3 females, aged 28-45 years old (34 on average). There were 12 cases of falling injury and 3 cases of vehicle accident injury. The course of disease was 1-12 hours. A total of 2 cases were on the left side and 13 were on the right side. There were 14 cases of a

Sternoclavicular dislocations are relatively infrequent, constituting less than 1% of somatic dislocations. Despite the fact that the sternoclavicular joint is the only articulation between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton, it possesses the least amount of osseous stability of any joint in the body. Sternoclavicular dislocations are generally divided into anterior and posterior disruptions, the former being the most common. An unusual case of an anterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint with a large superior component is described. It was found that coronal paraxial computed

Instability arthropathy of the sternoclavicular joint is most commonly managed by rehabilitation, injection, and either arthroscopic or open debridement with or without interposition arthroplasty. When these options fail to achieve symptom relief, excision arthroplasty is an option. This is associated with a risk of persistent instability and incomplete pain relief. We describe two cases in which custom sternoclavicular joint replacement was performed for painful insufficiency of scapular suspension. Although the prostheses remained secure in both cases, the first case was complicated by persi

BACKGROUND: Restoration of the sternoclavicular joint after posterior dislocation is important for upper limb function. The proximity of neuro-vascular mediastinal structures makes open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) a high-risk procedure. The ideal treatment strategy is still debated. Our aim is to review the treatment of acute posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation with a locking compression plate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present our experience of transarticular plating using a locking compression plate for the treatment of three consecutive patients with posterior sternocla

We sought to determine the prevalence of sternoclavicular (SC) joint calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition and its association with age, osteoarthritis, and atlantoaxial CPPD crystal deposition. In 209 consecutive patients, computed tomographic examinations of the cervical spine were retrospectively reviewed. Overall prevalence of CPPD crystal deposition in the SC joint was 17.2% (36/209), which increased with age (P<.0001). There was also a significant association between SC CPPD and osteoarthritis (P=.024) as well as atlantoaxial joint CPPD crystal deposition (P=.006).

Sternoclavicular joint dislocations account for <5 % of all dislocations of the shoulder girdle. Whereas most cases of anterior dislocation do not experience symptoms, some patients with anterior instability remain symptomatic and require reconstructive surgery to stabilize the sternoclavicular joint. We present the case of a 57-year-old male diagnosed with sternoclavicular joint anterior dislocation and unusual swallowing difficulty while bending the neck forward. The patient was treated using a new and effective surgical technique of sternoclavicular joint reconstruction named "double figure
