Technical note: compression stockings and posture: a comparative study of their effects on the proximal deep veins of the leg at rest.

Graduated compression stockings have been shown to reduce the incidence of deep venous thrombosis. While they are thought to act primarily by increasing venous flow velocity, their mode of action remains uncertain. Doppler ultrasound was employed to study the relative effects of three types of support stocking on the deep venous diameter, flow velocity and pulsatility in 10 non-pregnant female subjects. In addition, the effect of altered posture on the same parameters was assessed. Significant effects of the graduated stockings were found at the level of the popliteal vein, where a reduction i

Influence of compression stockings on the sensation of discomfort and the volume of the lower legs in healthy subjects during standing load.

BACKGROUND: Edema caused by orthostasis is a common clinical picture in the medical and occupational context. Medical compression therapy with compression stockings (CS) is considered a conservative therapeutic standard in edema therapy. The effect of CS on leg discomfort and the increase of the lower leg volume during a standing load still remains questionable. In addition, it is not entirely known whether there is a correlation between volume increase and discomfort in these individuals. METHOD: A timed, controlled standing load of 15 min was conducted by the participants in this non-random

Evaluation of the Use of Compressive Stockings Impregnated With Hesperetin-Based Nanocapsules in the Healing of Venous Ulcers: A Case Report.

Venous ulcers are a more severe complication of chronic venous insufficiency, significantly compromising patient quality of life (QoL). Compressive stockings are still the gold standard treatment method with alternative therapies currently being evaluated. In this perspective, we investigate the influence of compressive stockings impregnated with hesperetin-based nanocapsules in the healing process of venous ulcers. Compressive stockings impregnated with hesperetin-based nanocapsules were applied to a consenting patient for 6 months following all relevant ethical principles for patient studies

Effect of pressure intensity of graduated elastic compression stocking on muscle fatigue following calf-raise exercise.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of wearing a graduated elastic compression (EC) stocking, with different pressure profiles during a fatiguing calf-raise exercise session, on the torque generating capacity after exercise. Fourteen subjects performed 15 sets of 10 repetitions of calf-raise exercise, wearing one of three stockings of different compression pressure profiles: two kinds of EC stockings (one (EC30) with 30mmHg at the ankle, 21-25mmHg at the calf, and 10mmHg below the knee, and the other (EC18) with 18, 12-14, and 7mmHg at the same regions, respectively) an

Effects of preventive use of compression stockings for elderly with chronic venous insufficiency and swollen legs: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many home-dwelling elderly use medical compression stockings to prevent venous insufficiency, deep venous thrombosis, painful legs and leg ulcers. Assisting users with applying and removing compression stockings demands resources from the home based health services, but the effects are uncertain. This systematic review aims to summarize the effects of preventive use of medical compression stockings for patients with chronic venous insufficiency and swollen legs. METHODS: We conducted a search in six databases (Epistemonikos, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, MEDLINE, Embase

Effect of compression stockings on physiological responses and running performance in division III collegiate cross-country runners during a maximal treadmill test.

There is a growing trend for runners to use compression stockings (CS) to improve performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of CS on physiological variables associated with running performance. Participants were 10 NCAA division III cross-country runners. The study used a randomized, crossover design with 2 conditions (with CS and without CS). Both conditions consisted of a maximal treadmill test that involved 3-minute stages of increasing speed and incline, separated by a minute and one-half walking recovery stage. Seven days later, the participants repeated the maxim

Efficacy of a short course of complex lymphedema therapy or graduated compression stocking therapy in the treatment of post-thrombotic syndrome.

Treatment options for established post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) are limited. Complex lymphedema therapy (CLT), a non-invasive treatment that improves lymphatic flow, may have the potential to improve PTS. We conducted a single-center, investigator-blind, randomized controlled trial of 31 patients with a clinically established diagnosis of PTS and compared the efficacy of graduated compression stockings alone (30-40 mmHg) with CLT, a treatment that includes compression stockings, exercise, patient education, skin care and lymphatic drainage. Primary outcomes were the 1- and 3-month changes in

Merino wool graduated compression stocking increases lower limb venous blood flow: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Graduated compression stockings represent a nonpharmacological approach to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) due to prolonged immobility through reducing lower limb venous stasis. A novel merino wool, double-layer, below-knee graduated compression stocking has been developed to reduce the risk of air travel-related DVT and PE. METHODS: Twenty healthy adult participants were randomized to wear the novel graduated compression stocking on either the left or right leg. Doppler ultrasound measurements of popliteal venous blood flow were made on

Thigh-length versus below-knee compression elastic stockings for prevention of the postthrombotic syndrome in patients with proximal-venous thrombosis: a randomized trial.

Although below-knee compression elastic stockings (CES) are effective for the prevention of the postthrombotic syndrome (PTS), a substantial number of patients with deep venous thrombosis still develop PTS. In the present open-label, randomized clinical trial, we compared thigh-length with below-knee CES for the prevention of PTS. A total of 267 patients with the first episode of proximal deep venous thrombosis were randomized to wear either thigh-length or below-knee CES for 2 years. After 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months, they were assessed for PTS manifestations according to the Villalta sca

Eliciting patients' preferences for elastic compression stocking therapy after deep vein thrombosis: potential for improving compliance.

UNLABELLED: ESSENTIALS: Elastic compression stocking (ECS) therapy is used to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). We aimed to elicit patient preferences regarding ECS therapy after deep vein thrombosis. The most valued attributes were PTS risk reduction and the ability to put on the ECS independently. Heterogeneous results with respect to education level stress the importance of proper counselling. BACKGROUND: Elastic compression stocking (ECS) therapy is used for prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) after deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Current evidence on its effectiveness is confli

Adherence to Compression Stockings for Venous Leg Ulcer Prevention: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial and Health Economic Analysis, Evaluating a New Multidimensional Tool (PAMCAI).

Venous leg ulcer recurrence can be prevented with daily compression stocking wear; however, stocking effectiveness is often hindered by poor patient adherence. The 'Personalised and Multi-dimensional Compression Assessment and Intervention' (PAMCAI) is a multidimensional decision aid, delivered by clinicians via an iPad application, designed to improve adherence. This study piloted the methodology and feasibility of PAMCAI's efficacy and cost-effectiveness for evaluation in a larger randomised controlled trial (RCT). Using a two-arm, single-blinded pilot RCT with cost-utility analysis, PAMCAI

Compression stocking length effects on arterial blood pressure and heart rate following head-up tilt in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Change in posture from supine to standing induces a footward fluid shift. This shift might decrease arterial pressure (AP) and induce orthostatic hypotension. To prevent decrease in AP, compression stockings are recommended, but the effects of various lengths have not been compared. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare AP and heart rate (HR) by compression stocking length during head-up tilt (HUT). METHODS: The effects of elastic compression stockings of three lengths on AP and HR were examined at the onset of HUT. The stockings were knee-high, compressing the foot and calf; thigh-h
