Gastric volvulus is defined as an abnormal rotation of the stomach. Classical textbook presentation may not always be present. Meticulous assessment and broadened differential diagnosis are thus crucial. Various types have been described in literature. Low threshold for detection with aggressive resuscitation and immediate surgical exploration on suspected incarceration or perforation are mandatory. We report a case of 16-years-female who had atypical presentation of mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus. Emergency exploratory laparotomy with wedge resection and primary repair of stomach with antero

Gastric volvulus is an infrequently encountered clinical entity characterized by abnormal rotation of the stomach around an axis made by its two fixed portions, the cardia and pylorus. Surgical treatment by anterior gastropexy is usually indicated for chronic gastric volvulus to prevent complications and treat the underlying pathology. We report a patient with chronic gastric volvulus who was treated with laparoscopic anterior and diaphragmatic gastropexy. Laparoscopy not only identifies underlying predisposing conditions but also allows effective fixation for gastric volvulus. Laparoscopic ap

Acute gastric volvulus in infancy is a rare disorder and a surgical emergency. Prompt clinical suspicion and radiological assessment are essential for this life-threatening condition. We report a 3-month-old female case, admitted for an initial suspicion of an intestinal obstruction. She presented unproductive retching, respiratory distress, epigastric distension and lethargy. It was not possible to introduce a naso-gastric tube. A radiological contrast study showed an occluded cardio-esophageal junction without passage of barium, two gastric fluid levels and a horizontally positioned stomach

Gastric volvulus is a rare entity which lacks evidence in the literature, characterized by the abnormal twisting or rotation of the stomach on itself of at least 180 degrees along its transverse or longitudinal axis. This rotation can lead to the obstruction of the stomach and interfere with its blood supply, causing a variety of symptoms and potentially serious complications. Some patients may be managed temporarily or definitively with conservative or endoscopic treatment, the latest including reduction and percutaneous gastropexy, but most patients benefit from surgery. The authors report t

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition that occurs when the stomach twists either in an organoaxial or mesenteroaxial direction. In patients with recurrent episodes of volvulus, standard therapy is surgical correction. Many patients, however, are not candidates for surgical therapy because of comorbid conditions or advanced age. Our aim was to determine if the insertion of a single percutaneous gastrostomy tube placement would assist in management of gastric volvulus in patients not able to undergo surgical therapy. The alpha-loop maneuver was used to reduce gastric volvulus in three elderly pat

The diagnosis of gastric volvulus can be a clinical challenge as it is rare, and the symptoms are often nonspecific and intermittent. Upper endoscopy is a minimally invasive intervention that may be repeated more than once to provide key information and ultimately establish such a diagnosis. To emphasize the role of upper endoscopy in surgical cases with recurrent upper gastrointestinal obstructions, we present a case of intermittent gastric volvulus in a patient with a remote history of complex chest wall reconstruction for invasive breast cancer using an omental flap. She presented with subs

Gastric volvulus in conjunction with diaphragmatic hernia is an uncommon but life-threatening presentation that is generally in association with hiatal hernia or diaphragmatic injuries. Diaphragmatic hernia with gastric volvulus can occur many years after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy despite initial diaphragm intactness, and should be suspected in this patient population when they present with upper gastrointestinal obstruction. An acute episode of gastric volvulus can have a mortality of 30% to 50%, hence the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical entity, first described by Berti in 1866. It is a rotation of all or part of the stomach through more than 180 degrees . This rotation can occur on the longitudinal (organo-axial) or transverse (mesentero-axial) axis. This condition can lead to a closed-loop obstruction or strangulation. Traditional surgical therapy for gastric volvulus is based on an open approach. Here we report the case of a patient with chronic intermittent gastric volvulus who underwent a successful laparoscopic treatment.

Gastric outlet obstruction initiated by acute gastric volvulus is rare but potentially fatal. An unusual case of intrathoracic acute gastric volvulus complicated by distal stomach and transverse colon herniation into retrocardial space is reported. Prompt clinical diagnosis was followed by emergency laparoscopic de-rotation and gastropexy.

The traditional surgical treatment of chronic gastric volvulus involves laparotomy for derotation of the stomach and its fixation to the patients. We describe a 36-year-old man with organoaxial gastric volvulus who was treated successfully with laparoscopic gastropexy. He is asymptomatic four months later.

Two dogs developed gastric dilatation-volvulus 2 and 17 months, respectively, after splenectomy for treatment of splenic torsion. Splenic displacement and torsion may stretch the gastric ligaments, allowing increased mobility of the stomach. After splenectomy, an anatomic void may be created in the cranioventral part of the abdomen, contributing to the mobility of the stomach. Veterinarians treating dogs with isolated splenic torsion may wish to consider prophylactic gastropexy at splenectomy, to reduce the chance of future gastric dilatation-volvulus. Prophylactic gastropexy should be done on

We described a case of a man in his 90s with gastric volvulus of which point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) contributed to a rapid diagnosis. The patient had Borchardt's triad and POCUS showed a distended and fluid-filled stomach, which allowed us to strongly suspect gastric volvulus even prior to the abdominal CT scan. Gastric volvulus is a rare but life-threatening condition that may lead to tissue ischaemia and perforation. Therefore, a prompt diagnosis is extremely important. This case suggests that POCUS can be a powerful tool when clinicians suspect gastric volvulus.

The aim of the present case study is to raise concern on the proper diagnostic approach of acute gastric volvulus (AGV) cases, in which, the key issue is the timely diagnosis and the prompt therapeutic intervention. After thorough and systematic research of the current literature, it is concluded that early diagnosis remains challenging, while there is no relevant publication with emphasis on the contribution of ultrasonography to the diagnostic documentation of AGV. A 6 years old boy was admitted to our Department due to repeatedly non bilious vomiting and food refusal during the last 72 hour

Acute gastric volvulus is a rare yet life-threatening condition with mortality ranging from 30% to 50% if not treated promptly. The stomach rotates on itself causing strangulation precipitating necrosis, cameron lesions, and perforation. Long-standing paraesophageal hernia is a common cause of organoaxial gastric volvulus.

Gastric volvulus is a rare cause of gastric obstruction, due to the rotation of the stomach by more than 180°. It is a rare but life-threatening medical emergency that is considered difficult to diagnose at the initial clinical presentation. Forensic pathologists may be presented with gastric volvulus in several ways, for instance, as a cause of sudden and unexpected death or in the context of suspected clinical errors. The post-mortem examination of gastric volvulus may be challenging, due to the specific technical issues it presents and the various mechanisms by which volvulus may cause deat

Gastric volvulus is a rare but potentially life-threatening clinical entity due to possible gastric necrosis. A wandering spleen may also be associated with gastric volvulus. Patients presenting with the triad epigastralgia, vomiting followed by retching, and difficulty or inability to pass a nasogastric tube into the stomach are likely to have gastric volvulus. The operating surgeon should include this rare entity in the differential diagnosis when dealing with a patient with such a clinical profile. Herein, we present a case of gastric volvulus associated with a wandering spleen in a 28-year

Very few cases of coexisting organoaxial gastric and sigmoid volvuli have been reported. In here we describe 1 such case. Our patient, a 92-year-old man, was treated with a flexible sigmoidoscopy with decompression for his sigmoid volvulus. For the gastric volvulus, the patient was initially treated with an upper endoscopic gastric decompression and subsequently treated with a laparoscopic anterior gastropexy. After the gastropexy, the patient developed bleeding and ischemia of the stomach, which is a rare complication due to the stomach's rich blood supply. This case report reiterates the nee

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition that may present with various symptoms and may occur as an acute or chronic condition. Signs and symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and chest pain. It is imperative to recognize acute gastric volvulus in a timely fashion, since a delay in diagnosis may result in foregut obstruction and increased risk of strangulation, if not recognized and treated promptly. Additionally, secondary complications that are equally life-threatening, such as cardiac arrhythmias, can occur. For this very reason, it is important to highlight gastric volvulus as

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition defined as an abnormal rotation of the stomach by more than 180 degrees. Gastric volvulus could present atypically with simply nausea and vomiting. A high index of suspicion is required for prompt diagnosis and treatment, especially when a patient presents with subacute intermittent gastric volvulus. Here, we present the case of a 56-year-old female with lung cancer status post left lower lobectomy undergoing chemotherapy who presented with intermittent nausea and upper abdominal pain for a few weeks. Gastric volvulus was surgically corrected in three patients with asplenic syndrome associated with severe cardiac anomalies. One patient, whose stomach was necrotic, died postoperatively with an intra-abdominal abscess. The other two patients have remained well. Four intra-abdominal abnormalities were found in the three asplenic patients: (1) absent gastrophrenic ligaments; (2) absent gastrosplenic ligaments; (3) deficient fixation of the pylorus, and (4) proximity of the pylorus to the cardia. Cardiac surgeons and pediatricians who treat the asplenic syndrome should be aware of extracardiac a
