Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Colonoscopic screening with removal of adenomatous polyps in individuals at average risk is known to decrease the incidence and associated mortality from colon cancer. Certain conditions, notably inflammatory bowel disease involving the colon, a family history of polyps or cancer, a personal history of colon cancer or polyps, and other conditions such as acromegaly, ureterosigmoidostomy, and Streptococcus bovis bacteremia are associated with an increased risk of colonic neoplasia. Accurate identification of mastitis pathogens is often compromised when using conventional culture-based methods. Here, we report a novel, rapid assay tested for speciation of bacterial mastitis pathogens using high-resolution melt analysis (HRMA) of 16S rDNA sequences. Real-time PCR amplification of 16S rRNA gene fragment, spanning the variable region V5 and V6 was performed with a resulting amplicon of 290bp. First, a library was generated of melt curves of 9 common pathogens that are implicated in bovine mastitis. Six of the isolates, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae, Klebsiella p

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been developed as a new type of soft ionization mass spectrometry in recent years. An increasing number of clinical microbiological laboratories consider it as an innovative approach for bacterial identification. This study was undertaken in order to evaluate the use of MALDI-TOF MS for rapid identification of the clinical streptococci. A systematic review was conducted based on a literature search of the Medline and Embase databases. Fixed-effects models based on the P-value and the I-square were u

A 69-year-old female was admitted because of a febrile state, somnolence, nausea and diarrhea. Addison's disease known to have developed several years earlier after adrenal tuberculosis suggested Addisonian crisis triggered by an acute infection. Therapy with steroids and substitution of electrolytes and fluid led to rapid improvement. Streptococcus bovis was identified as causative agent. The known association of this germ with cancer of the colon led to further investigation which revealed cancer of the sigmoid and incidental cancer of a salpinx. After surgical removal of both cancers, the p

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is an heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by impaired antibody production. It shows a wide spectrum of manifestations including severe and recurrent respiratory infections (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus) and gastrointestinal (Campylobacter jejuni, rotavirus and Giardia lamblia). Viral infections caused by herpes zoster, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and hepatitis C are rare. The opportunistic agents such as CMV, Pneumocystis jirovecii, cryptococcus and atypical mycobacteria have been reported as isolated cases. This paper reports the case of a

Serum fluorescent streptococcal antibody tests were carried out on 71 patients with clinically suspected infective endocarditis, and a final diagnosis of endocarditis was obtained in 46 patients. A serological diagnosis of streptococcal endocarditis was obtained in 10 patients who had persistently negative blood cultures, as fluorescent streptococcal antibody titres equal to or greater than 400 were detected against at least one of four strains of streptococci used as heterologous antigens. There were no false positive fluorescent antibody results with heterologous antigens during tests on 29

The gastrointestinal tract of bovines often contains bacteria that contribute to disorders of the rumen, and may also contain foodborne or opportunistic human pathogens as well as bacteria capable of causing mastitis in cows. Thus there is a need to develop broad-spectrum therapies that are effective while not leading to unacceptably long antibiotic withdrawal times. Mammary secretion from 32 primigravid heifers was obtained aseptically to determine frequency of bacterial isolation and incidence of intramammary infection near parturition. Quarter samples were collected 14 and 7 days prior to expected parturition, at parturition, and 7 and 14 days postparturition. Analysis of culture data indicated that 77.1% of samples were bacteriologically negative, and 15.7% contained coagulase negative staphylococci, 4.4% streptococci other than Streptococcus agalactiae, 3.8% coliforms, .8% coagulase positive staphylococci, and .1% Corynebacterium bovis. Bovine mastitis is one of the major challenges in dairy production, causing significant economic losses and emphasizing the need for alternatives to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) essential oil (BEO) presents recognized biological properties that can be enhanced through nanoengineered delivery systems. This study aimed to chemically characterize the BEO of B. graveolens, develop a nanoemulsion containing the essential oil (BEO-NE), and evaluate its toxicological, antinociceptive, and antimicrobial activities against bovine mastitis-associated pathogens.

Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus, previously recognized as S. bovis biotype II/2, is an uncommon yet important cause of invasive infection in young infants. Here, we report the first case of ventriculitis that was unexpectedly diagnosed in the course of neonatal meningitis due to S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus, and we review the relevant literature. A 28-day-old male infant from Japan presented with fever, lethargy, and irritability. S. bovis was isolated from blood and the cerebrospinal fluid culture and was then identified as S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus. Intravenou

BACKGROUND: Non-β-hemolytic streptococci (NBHS) can cause infective endocarditis (IE). Echocardiography is used to diagnose IE, but it is not known which patients with NBHS bacteremia should undergo echocardiography.
METHOD: Medical records of patients with NBHS bacteremia in southern Sweden from 2012 to 2014 were studied retrospectively. The patients were divided into 2 cohorts. In the first, correlations between the reported data and IE were studied. These variables were used to construct the HANDOC score, which was then validated in the second cohort.
RESULTS: Three hundred thirty-nine pa

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of neonatal early-onset sepsis (EOS) has changed with time and with changes in prevention strategy. Population-representative contemporary data provide insights on how to further improve EOS prevention and triage strategies.
METHODS: Neonates born in public hospitals in Hong Kong from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2017 were included. The epidemiological characteristics of EOS and the use of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) were compared between the 2 epochs before (January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2011) and after (January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2017) th

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. The main risk factors for CRC are family history of colon or rectal cancer, familial polyposis syndrome or hereditary nonpolyposis, and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease). Recent studies show that the gastrointestinal microbiota play a significant role in colorectal carcinogenesis. In this review we present the microorganisms, whose influence on the development of CRC has been proven: Bacteroides fragilis, Clostridioides and Clostridium spp., Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia co

Intracellular killing of Staphylococcus aureus by alveolar macrophages is known to be enhanced by exposure to alveolar lining material. Because this material may have a role in pulmonary host defenses, we have studied its effect on pneumococci and other nonstaphylococcal organisms. Alveolar lining material from rats caused rapid killing and lysis of pneumococci. The antipneumococcal activity was localized to the surfactant-containing fraction of the fluid and was not affected by trypsin. Phospholipid extracts of the surfactant fraction or purified lamellar bodies killed pneumococci. Lysis of p

Streptococcus infantarius subspecies coli (formerly S. lutetiensis), a member of the S. bovis/S. equinus complex (SBSEC), is a rare cause of neonatal and infantile infection. In contrast to more common pathogens seen in this age group (ie, S. agalactiae (group B Streptococcus)), SBSEC organisms are infrequently implicated in neonatal and infantile meningitis. A previously healthy infant male presented with fever, irritability and poor feeding. Lumbar puncture revealed cloudy cerebrospinal fluid with elevated white cells, high protein and low glucose. Gram stain showed polymorphonuclear leucocy
