Subgingival microbial profiles in pre- and postmenopausal women: Associations with serum estradiol levels.

BACKGROUND: Subgingival dental plaque is an ecosystem playing a key role in supporting both oral health and systemic health. Menopause-related changes have the potential to disrupt its balance, which is crucial to postmenopausal well-being. Our study explored how circulating estradiol levels correlate with subgingival microbial composition using checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. We also demonstrated that combining this method with 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing insights remains valuable for examining subgingival ecology. METHODS: We assessed 40

Impact of periodontal therapy on the subgingival microbiota of severe periodontitis: comparison between good responders and individuals with refractory periodontitis using the human oral microbe identification microarray.

BACKGROUND: This study compares the changes to the subgingival microbiota of individuals with "refractory" periodontitis (RP) or treatable periodontitis (good responders [GR]) before and after periodontal therapy by using the Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarray (HOMIM) analysis. METHODS: Individuals with chronic periodontitis were classified as RP (n = 17) based on mean attachment loss (AL) and/or >3 sites with AL ≥2.5 mm after scaling and root planing, surgery, and systemically administered amoxicillin and metronidazole or as GR (n = 30) based on mean attachment gain and no sites wi

Bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility of gram-positive cocci isolated from pus specimens of orofacial odontogenic infections.

We recently reported the beta-lactamase production and antimicrobial susceptibility of anaerobic gram-negative rods isolated from pus specimens of 93 orofacial odontogenic infections. In this report, we determine the bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria other than anaerobic gram-negative rods, mainly gram-positive cocci, isolated from the same specimens. Streptococcus constellatus and Peptostreptococcus micros were frequent isolates from all types of infection examined. Peptostreptococcus prevotii, Corynebacterium species, and Eubacterium species were recovered only from d

Antibiotic resistance in human peri-implantitis microbiota.

OBJECTIVES: Because antimicrobial therapy is often employed in the treatment of infectious dental implant complications, this study determined the occurrence of in vitro antibiotic resistance among putative peri-implantitis bacterial pathogens. METHODS: Submucosal biofilm specimens were cultured from 160 dental implants with peri-implantitis in 120 adults, with isolated putative pathogens identified to species level, and tested in vitro for susceptibility to 4 mg/l of doxycycline, 8 mg/l of amoxicillin, 16 mg/l of metronidazole, and 4 mg/l of clindamycin. Findings for amoxicillin and metronid

Potts puffy tumour: a rare but important diagnosis.

Potts puffy tumour (PPT) is a subperiosteal abscess arising from frontal bone osteomyelitis. We present a case of a 75-year-old lady with headache and a forehead swelling who was initially treated for sinusitis and giant cell arteritis in a primary care setting, but failed to improve. Following clinical deterioration and further investigation, CT appearances were consistent with a diagnosis of PPT and an extra-axial collection. Needle decompression, frontal trephine and endoscopic frontal sinusotomy were performed and intraoperative swabs cultured Streptococcus constellatus PPT is an unusual c

Constant high adrenal FDG uptake in PET/CT associated with mitochondrial disease.

We describe a patient with the m.3243A>G mitochondrial DNA mutation who developed sepsis caused by Streptococcus constellatus. In the acute phase of illness, abnormally high uptake of (18)F-FDG was observed in both adrenal glands that appeared anatomically normal. In repeated imaging six months later the adrenal uptake had diminished but remained clearly elevated. We did not observe high adrenal FDG uptake as in the patient described here among 30 patients with Staphylococcus aureus sepsis that were investigated with identical imaging protocol. In sepsis, oxygen consumption and metabolic rate

Diagnostic Yield of 16S Ribosomal Ribonucleic Acid Gene-Based Targeted Metagenomic Sequencing for Evaluation of Pleural Space Infection: A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the microbial profile of complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema, and to evaluate whether antimicrobial selection would differ if guided by targeted metagenomic sequencing (tMGS) vs conventional cultures (CCs) alone. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed the pleural fluid of a cohort of 47 patients undergoing thoracentesis from January 1, 2017 to August 31, 2019, to characterize their microbial profile. All samples underwent 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene polymerase chain reaction, followed by tMGS. RESULTS: Pleural space infection was deemed clinical

Meningitis caused by streptococci other than Streptococcus pneumoniae: a retrospective clinical study.

We reviewed the medical records of 26 patients (median age 62 years, range 5-76 years) admitted to our institution during 1978-98 with acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) caused by streptococci other than Streptococcus pneumoniae (comprising 1.9% of all patients with ABM). 19 cases were community-acquired and 7 were nosocomial. 73% had comorbid or predisposing conditions and 73% had an identifiable extracerebral focus; only in 2 patients no comorbid disease, primary focus or predisposing condition was present. Five patients had cerebral abscesses, and 5 had endocarditis. Beta-haemolytic streptoco

Chronic cough associated with subacute bacterial endocarditis.

Although the literature on subacute bacterial endocarditis from both the preantibiotic and antibiotic eras mentions cough as a symptom, neither bacteremia nor endocarditis is listed in reviews on chronic cough. Herein we describe a 74-year-old man who underwent an extensive workup as an outpatient because of chronic cough of 7 months' duration. Chest roentgenography, chest and sinus computed tomography, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, gallium scan, transthoracic echocardiography, and other studies revealed no apparent cause for his nonproductive cough. Because of a persistently increased erythrocyte

[Clinical significance of the Streptococcus milleri group in peritonsillar abscesses].

Few researchers have microbiologically studied peritonsillar abscesses in detail, and their results have been conflicting. Although Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-streptococcus) is commonly considered an important pathogen in this infection, recent studies have demonstrated the recovery of many other streptococci mainly consisting of alpha-streptococci. Few studies have identified these streptococci at the species level, however. We studied details of bacteriology in 31 cases of peritonsillar abscess treated between 1991 and 2000. The Streptococcus milleri group was most frequently isola

A case report of primary sternal osteomyelitis caused by polymicrobial bacteria, including Actinomyces israelii.

We herein report a case of primary sternal osteomyelitis caused by polymicrobial bacteria, including Actinomyces israelii. A 72-year-old man presented with a fever and precordial pain. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed peristernal fluid associated with an osteolytic lesion and a peripheral nodule in the right upper lobe. We suspected sternal osteomyelitis, and an incision and drainage were performed. Culture of the drainage fluid and bone tissue yielded A. israelii, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and Streptococcus constellatus. Treatment with benzylpenicillin potassium (PCG) was administered

Anaerobic oral flora in the North American black bear (Ursus americanus) in eastern North Carolina.

Microbial flora can provide insight into the ecology and natural history of wildlife in addition to improving understanding of health risks. This study examines the anaerobic oral flora of hunter killed black bears (Ursus americanus) in eastern North Carolina. Oral swabs from the buccal and lingual supragingival tooth surfaces of the first and second mandibular and maxillary molars of 22 black bears were inoculated onto Brucella Blood Agar plates supplemented with hemin and vitamin K after transport from the field using reduced oxoid nutrient broth. Sixteen anaerobic bacterial species, represe

Effects of Diluents, Saliva and Other Organics on the Microbicidal Activity of Cetylpyridinium Chloride and Povidone-iodine.

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is used for infection control and preoperative sterilization of the oral and pharyngeal regions. Marketed preparations containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) are used to inhibit growth of oral bacteria. We conducted an in vitro study of the sterilizing effects of these microbicides on 10 oral bacterial strains and fungi related to pneumonia and periodontal disease, after dilution with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), saliva, and components in saliva. The CPC solution was evaluated at 50 mg/100 mL, which is the concentration used in products. CPC sterilized all strain

Profile of bacteria colonizing the exposed bone of patients with anti-osteoclastic drug-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.

Microbial etiology for anti-osteoclastic drug-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ) was suggested. This study investigates any link between bacteria colonizing ARONJ sites and other oral cavity sites. Microbiota samples of 10 ARONJ patients were collected from the exposed bone, adjacent teeth, contralateral teeth, and tongue. DNA checkerboard hybridization was used for microbiota analysis with 43 genomic DNA probes prepared from human oral bacterial (38) and candida (5) species, using Socransky's bacterial complexes as a guide. The frequency and the mean proportion of each bacterial species

Complex Microbiome in Brain Abscess Revealed by Whole-Genome Culture-Independent and Culture-Based Sequencing.

Brain abscess is a severe infectious disease with high mortality and mobility. Although culture-based techniques have been widely used for the investigation of microbial composition of brain abscess, these approaches are inherent biased. Recent studies using 16S ribosomal sequencing approaches revealed high complexity of the bacterial community involved in brain abscess but fail to detect fungal and viral composition. In the study, both culture-independent nanopore metagenomic sequencing and culture-based whole-genome sequencing using both the Illumina and the Nanopore platforms were conducted

The clinical features of respiratory infections caused by the Streptococcus anginosus group.

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) play important roles in respiratory infections. It is ordinarily difficult to distinguish them from contaminations as the causative pathogens of respiratory infections because they are often cultured in respiratory specimens. Therefore, it is important to understand the clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of respiratory infections caused by the SAG members. The aim of this study is to clarify the role of the SAG bacteria in respiratory infections. METHODS: A total of 30 patients who were diagnosed with respiratory infections whi

Pediatric orbital cellulitis: Case report of an unusual etiology and pathogen.

Orbital cellulitis is an uncommon condition with risks to sight and life. As a complication of maxillofacial injuries, the literature suggests this is only possible with fractures or direct inoculation, and there are no reports to the contrary. Here, we make the first report of a possible etiology by which orbital cellulitis developed in a 14-year-old boy even without skin breach or bony fractures; as well as a rare causative pathogen. He presented with facial abscess and progressive orbital cellulitis after blunt facial trauma, requiring functional endoscopic sinus surgery with needle aspirat
