Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) are parts of normal flora of the oral cavity and associated with abscess forming in various sites on the body. Although the clinical features of infections caused by each member of the SAG in adults has been reported, it has not well been known in children. The aim of this study was to clarify the site of infections associated with individual SAG species among children. Medical records from March 2010 to July 2016 were reviewed at Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center. Any SAG species (S. anginosus, S. constellatus, or S. intermedius) isolated from cl

We present the case of a 13-year-old boy who unexpectedly needed to be resuscitated at home after an assumed uncomplicated otitis media. Imaging at our clinic showed mastoiditis and a cystoid mass in the left cerebellopontine angle compressing the brainstem, as well as an Arnold-Chiari-Malformation. Both the laboratory examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and surgical biopsy with pathological evaluation of the mastoid supported the inflammatory etiology of the mass. Microbiologically, Streptococcus intermedius was detected in the blood culture and CSF. Due to brain death, which most likely

The present study explores antimicrobial activities of Caesalpinia sappan extracts against three strains of oral pathogenic bacteria; Streptococcus mutans DMST9567 (Smu9), Streptococcus mutans DMST41283 (Smu4), and Streptococcus intermedius DMST42700 (Si). Ethanol crude extract of C. sappan (Cs-EtOH) was firstly compared to that of other medicinal plants using disc diffusion method. Cs-EtOH showed significantly higher effective inhibition against all tested strains than other extracts and 0.12% chlorhexidine with the inhibition zone of 17.5 ± 0.5, 18.5 ± 0.0, and 17.0 ± 0.0 mm against Smu9, Sm

BACKGROUND: Serious infections are rare complications of standard treatment in chronic hepatitis C with pegylated interferon alpha (Peg IFN) and ribavirin.
CASE: We report two cases of life-threatening tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) in women older than 40 year of age. No casual risk factors of TOA could be identified in them. In one case septic shock and acute renal failure occured. TOA was caused by endogenic bacteria (Porphyromonas asaccharolytica in the first case and Streptococcus intermedius in the latter). Surgical treatment and interruption of IFN therapy was necessary in both cases.

Hepatic abscesses are uncommon and rarely associated with diverticulitis as an indirect source of infection. We report the case of a 60-year-old male with a history of recurrent diverticulitis who presented with fever, nausea, and abdominal pain demonstrating a single multiloculated hepatic lesion measuring 5.8 × 5.1 × 5.1 cm upon admission. Piperacillin-tazobactam was initiated for sepsis management, and metronidazole was initiated for amoebic coverage. Aspiration and drainage of the abscess were performed, and cultures confirmed Streptococcus intermedius, prompting antibiotic therapy to be n

This case report discusses a rare instance of polymicrobial pericarditis in a man in his early 60s with a history of substance abuse. The patient presented with chest pain and shortness of breath, later diagnosed as pericarditis caused by Streptococcus anginosus, S. intermedius and Candida glabrata, likely originating from a large adjacent oesophageal ulcer. The condition led to critical illness, requiring pericardiocentesis, antibiotic and antifungal therapy. Despite initial improvement, the patient experienced recurrence and ultimately underwent pericardectomy. The article emphasises the rar

The purpose of the present report was to present a rare case of a brain abscess in a child with heterotaxy syndrome, severe cardiac anomalies, and extensive dental caries. The pathogen was Streptococcus intermedius isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid. The source of the pathogen was probably an infection of a primary molar with a dentoalveolar abscess involving the bud of the permanent successor. After a long course of antibiotic regimens followed by a craniotomy with abscess drainage, a shunt, and comprehensive dental treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital without any neurol

A case is reported of a brain abscess and an intracranial mycotic aneurysm associated with infective endocarditis caused by streptococcus intermedius. A 60-year-old man with a history of fever presented aphasia and right hemiparesis. A computed tomographic scan of the head revealed a low-density area with ring enhancement in the left parietal lobe consistent with a brain abscess. An angiography demonstrated an aneurysm on the distal branch of the middle cerebral artery compatible with a mycotic aneurysm. Doppler echo cardiography showed severe mitral regurgitation by chordal ruptures. The brai

Background: The increasing use of electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), especially among youth, has raised concerns about the impact of vaping on oral health. While ECIGs are often marketed as a safer alternative, the existing literature suggests that their use may have detrimental effects on the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. The oral cavity is the first point of contact for ECIG aerosol, and new reports link vaping to the onset of periodontal disease. It is critical to understand the potential effects of vaping on the oral microbiome, which affects systemic health. This study investigates ho

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the subgingival microflora composition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with untreated chronic periodontitis and compare them with systemically healthy controls also having untreated chronic periodontitis.
METHOD: Thirty IBD patients [15 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 15 with ulcerative colitis (UC)] and 15 control individuals participated in the study. All patients had been diagnosed with untreated chronic periodontitis. From every patient, subgingival plaque was collected from four gingivitis and four periodontitis sites with paper points. Eight cases of infection caused by Streptococcus milleri were studied clinically, and a comparative study was made of the backgrounds and factors influencing the development of infectious diseases caused by Streptococcus milleri and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The patients (six males and two females) with infectious diseases caused by Streptococcus milleri ranged in age from 21 to 81 years old with an average age of 62.0 years. The infectious diseases encountered among the patients were pyothorax in three patients, and in one patient each pyothorax and lung abscess, pleurisy, a secondary infecti

"Streptococcus milleri group" are the part of the indigenous oral flora, and they are proposed to contain three distinct species: Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus constellatus, and Streptococcus intermedius. Though not included in the approved lists of bacterial names, "S. milleri group" are regarded as the causative organisms of suppurative infections, such as oral abscess, brain abscess, lung abscess and empyema. I have studied the clinical significance of the "S. milleri group" in respiratory infections. An investigation was performed to confirm the incidence of "S. milleri group" col

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a form of diffuse lung injury with many potential etiologies, pneumonia being the most common cause developing outside of the hospital. Foreign body (FB) aspiration is a risk factor for pneumonia, and therefore, ARDS. Although these associations exist, the development of ARDS immediately following the removal of an aspirated FB appears quite rare. We present the case of an 11 year old male who was found to have a right-sided, post-obstructive pneumonia secondary to an aspirated FB obstructing the bronchus intermedius. Relief of the obstruction allo

BACKGROUND: Bacteria in the Streptococcus milleri group (S. anginosus, S. constellatus, and S. intermedius) are associated with bacteremia and abscess formation. While most reports of Streptococcus milleri group (SMG) infection occur in patients with underlying medical conditions, SMG infections during pregnancy have been documented. However, SMG infections in pregnant women are associated with either neonatal or maternal puerperal sepsis. Albeit rare, S. milleri spinal-epidural abscess in pregnancy has been reported, always as a complication of spinal-epidural anesthesia. We report a case of

Bacterial meningitis and infectious cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) are both life-threatening central nervous system infections, often caused by sinusitis. While cerebrovascular complications are well-recognized in bacterial meningitis, their association with CST is rare. A 69-year-old man presented with a 19-day history of headache, followed by diplopia. On the day of admission, he developed left hemiparesis. On examination, he had mild right eye abduction impairment, dysarthria, mild left hemiparesis with left facial paralysis, and nuchal rigidity. At admission, brain computed tomography re

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The ocular surface is perpetually exposed to the external environment, rendering it susceptible to microbial contamination. The ocular surface microbiota consists of non-pathogenic microorganisms that inhabit the conjunctiva and cornea. This study's objective was to extensively review the prevalence of bacterial and fungal organisms in the conjunctiva of healthy and diseased cats. (Herpes- and Calici-infected groups).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study was performed on 240 cats that had visited veterinary health centers (Tehran, Iran) for examination. Sterile

A woman in her 60s with multiple sclerosis (MS) presented with right-sided ptosis, right sixth nerve palsy, right facial paraesthesia and signs of sepsis. She had a recent diagnosis of a dental abscess. Investigations revealed a right submasseter abscess leading to bacterial meningitis (Streptococcus intermedius) and a cavernous sinus thrombosis. She was managed in intensive care and underwent surgical drainage of the abscess. Anticoagulation for 6 months was planned. Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a very rare complication of a dental abscess, and even less frequently associated with submassete

The bacterial and fungal flora of 1118 ears of dogs with otitis externa and 100 ears of healthy control dogs were studied in order to isolate the causative agents. The yeast Malassezia pachydermatis (56%) was by far the most common organism in otitic dogs followed by the bacteria Staphylococcus intermedius (23%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12%), Proteus spp. (6%) and Streptococcus canis (5%). A statistical analysis of observed results showed that the incidence of these organisms is significant in otitic dogs. Many strains of S.intermedius, P.aeruginosa and Proteus spp. are resistant to antimicrob

A 4 hr test for hydrolysis of L-pyrrolidonyl-beta-naphthylamide (PYR) was evaluated for its use in identifying group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, group D enterococci, and Staphylococcus haemolyticus. All of the group A streptococci and the enterococci tested were positive in the PYR test, whereas all of the nongroup A, B, or D beta-hemolytic streptococci, all of the viridans, and all of the Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates tested were PYR negative. Two strains of Aerococcus species were PYR positive and could not be differentiated from enterococci in this test. All strains of S. haemolyticu
