Streptococcus suis, an encapsulated zoonotic pathogen, has been reported to cause a variety of infectious diseases, such as meningitis and streptococcal-toxic-shock-like syndrome. Increasing antimicrobial resistance has triggered the need for new treatments. In the present study, we found that isopropoxy benzene guanidine (IBG) significantly attenuated the effects caused by S. suis infection, in vivo and in vitro, by killing S. suis and reducing S. suis pathogenicity. Further studies showed that IBG disrupted the integrity of S. suis cell membranes and increased the permeability of S. suis cel

Streptococcus suis can cause severe infections in pigs and humans. The tonsils of pigs are major niches for S. suis, and different serotypes of S. suis can be found in the same tonsil. Pig tonsil colonization by S. suis is believed to be an important source of infection for humans and pigs. However, how S. suis competes for a stable tonsil niche is unknown. Here, we found that S. suis strain WUSS351, isolated from a healthy pig tonsil, is virulent and multidrug-resistant. The ABC transporter system SstFEG, conferring resistance to bacitracin, was reported to confer a competitive survival advan

Streptococcus suis, a gram-positive coccus, is recognized as an emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes serious infections in humans, such as bacterial meningitis and sepsis, with poor outcomes. The pathogen is known to be transmitted through the consumption of raw pork or occupational exposure to pigs. A previously healthy 38-year-old woman with occupational exposure to raw pork was presented to our emergency department with a clinical diagnosis of rapidly progressive septic shock. Peripheral blood smears detected chains of cocci inside granulocytes, which led to the early recognition of gram-

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a gram-positive bacterial pathogen in pigs which can cause serious infections in human including meningitis, and septicaemia resulting in serious complications. There were discrepancies between different data and little is known concerning associated risk factors of S. suis. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate on S. suis infection risk factors in human. We searched eight relevant databases using the MeSH terms "Streptococcus suis" OR "Streptococcus suis AND infection" limited in human with no time nor language restriction. Out of 4

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an important swine and human pathogen. There are 33 serotypes that have been described. Zoonotic cases are very common the Northern part of Thailand, especially in Phayao Province. However, the prevalence of S. suis and, more particularly the different serotypes, in pigs in this region is poorly known and needed to be addressed.
THE CONTEXT AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Distribution of S. suis serotypes varies depending on the geographical area. Knowledge of the serotype distribution is important for epidemiological studies. Consequently, 180 tonsil sam

Sixteen isolates of gram-positive, coccoid bacteria were obtained from clinical cases of diverse conditions in cattle and identified as Streptococcus suis using 16S ribosomal DNA gene sequencing and other bacterial identification methods. None of the isolates could be assigned to any of the known S. suis capsular types. Virulence-associated gene profiling that targeted muramidase-released protein, extracellular protein factor, suilysin, 89-kb pathogenicity island, and arginine deiminase ( arcA) genes were negative except for 1 isolate that was arcA positive. The arcA-positive isolate caused se

Streptococcus suis is an important meningitis-causing pathogen in pigs and humans. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been identified as host defense mechanism against different pathogens. Here, NETs were detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of S. suis-infected piglets despite the presence of active nucleases. To study NET-formation and NET-degradation after transmigration of S. suis and neutrophils through the choroid plexus epithelial cell barrier, a previously described model of the human blood-CSF barrier was used. NETs and respective entrapment of streptococci were recorded i

Since 1983 some pig breeding and fattening farms in the Netherlands have been faced with a considerable mortality in pigs due to Streptococcus suis type 2 infections. The most predominant clinical feature of S. suis type 2 infection is meningitis, although sudden deaths often occur. It was noted that some affected farms had imported breeding stock from the United Kingdom. Tonsils of slaughter pigs were collected from herds with and without a history of S. suis type 2 infections. Bacteriological examination was done by using an elective-selective medium. No significant difference was found in c

The first documented instance of acute bacterial meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis in Colombia has been reported. A 69-year-old male resident of a rural area with a history of direct contact with pigs presented to the clinic with a persistent fever, severe headaches, and altered consciousness. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed neutrophilic pleocytosis, increased cerebrospinal fluid protein levels, and decreased glucose due to consumption. Initial culture and confirmation by mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF identified S. suis, with an MLSB resistance profile and resistance to tetracyclines,

OBJECTIVES: With the increased bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics, there is an urgent need for the development of novel antimicrobial agents. Cathelicidins belonging to the family of cationic host defense peptides (HDPs) are a critical component of the innate immune system with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. Our previous study has shown that CATH-1 exhibits potent bactericidal activity against Streptococcus suis (S. suis), but the underlying mechanism is still unclear.
PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of CATH-1 on the resistance development and antibac

Streptococcus suis(SS) infection is a zoonotic acute infectious disease, SS infective endocarditis is relatively rare, there is no case report of Streptococcus suis Serotype 1(SS1) causing mitral valve infection. The rapid progression of this patient's infection and the severe damage to the valve structure differ from the previous understanding of the relatively low virulence of SS1. Early diagnosis and selection of the correct antibiotic treatment according to the drug sensitivity is very important. If the infection causes damage to the structure of the body's mitral valve, resulting in regurg

Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is an important zoonotic pathogen that induces an NLRP3-dependent cytokine storm. NLRP3 inflammasome activation triggers not only an inflammatory response but also pyroptosis. However, the exact mechanism underlying S. suis-induced macrophage pyroptosis is not clear. Our results showed that SS2 induced the expression of pyroptosis-associated factors, including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, propidium iodide (PI) uptake and GSDMD-N expression, as well as NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL-1β secretion. However, GSDMD deficiency and NLRP3 inhibition us

Streptococcus suis is one of the most common zoonotic pathogens, in humans and can cause meningitis, endocarditis, arthritis and sepsis. Human cases of Streptococcus suis infection have been reported worldwide, and most of those cases occurred in Asia. Hearing loss is the most common sequela of Streptococcus suis meningitis. Streptococcus suis infection complicated with acute cerebral infarction has rarely been reported. Therefore, to provide a reference for this disease, we reported a case of acute multiple brain infarctions associated with Streptococcus suis infection. In our report, a 69yea

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) disease is a prevalent zoonotic infectious threat that elicits a systemic inflammatory response in both swine and humans, frequently culminating in high mortality rates. The excessive inflammation triggered by S. suis infection can precipitate tissue damage and sudden death; however, a comprehensive strategy to mitigate this inflammatory response remains elusive. Our study examines the role of NLRP6 in S. suis infection, with a particular focus on its involvement in pathogen regulation. A marked upregulation of NLRP6 was observed in peritoneal macrophages post-infe

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis can cause meningitis, polyarthritis and acute death in piglets. However, the risk factors associated with S. suis infection remain incompletely understood. Therefore, a longitudinal study was carried out, in which six batches from two Spanish pig farms with S. suis problems were repeatedly examined to determine possible risk factors.
METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted, and potential risk factors were evaluated using mixed-effects logistic regression models. The explanatory variables included: (a) concomitant pathogens; (b) biomarkers associa

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) and Glaesserella parasuis (G. parasuis) are ubiquitous colonizers of swine tonsils that can cause systemic disease and death, under undefined conditions. It is not known, however, whether these 2 species interact during initial infection. To investigate whether such interactions occur, the objective of this study was to assess phenotypic differences between mono-and co-cultures of S. suis and G. parasuis when representative strains with different virulence potential were co-cultured in vitro. In cross-streak screening experiments, some G. parasuis (GP) serovar stra

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an endemic zoonotic pathogen still lacking adequate prevention in pigs. The present case study looked back to the occurrence and consequences of S. suis outbreaks in our swine research facilities in search of new metabolic and physiological insight. From a series of outbreaks, a dataset was created including 56 pigs sampled during disease detection based on clinical signs. Pigs suspected with S. suis infection were defined as diseased (n = 28) and included pigs defined as neurologically diseased (n = 20) when severe neurological signs (central nervous system dys

Synthesis of capsular polysaccharide (CPS), an important virulence factor of pathogenic bacteria, is modulated by the CpsBCD phosphoregulatory system in Streptococcus. Serine/threonine kinases (STKs, e.g. Stk1) can also regulate CPS synthesis, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we identify a protein (CcpS) that is phosphorylated by Stk1 and modulates the activity of phosphatase CpsB in Streptococcus suis, thus linking Stk1 to CPS synthesis. The crystal structure of CcpS shows an intrinsically disordered region at its N-terminus, including two threonine residues that are phosphory

Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic pathogen causing substantial economic losses to the pig industry, as well as being a human health burden due to infections worldwide, especially in Southeast Asia. In Thailand, there was high cumulative incidence in humans during 1987-2021, mostly in males. At least five large outbreaks have been documented after the largest outbreak in China in 2005, which was related to the consumption of raw pork or dishes containing pig's blood. The major clinical features are sepsis or meningitis, with hearing loss a major complication of S. suis disease. Thai human S. sui

A determination of susceptibility/resistance to antimicrobials via serotype was carried out in 506 field isolates of Streptococcus suis, originating from pig farms in the Czech Republic in the period 2018-2022. A very high level of susceptibility of S. suis isolates was found to amoxicillin, in combination with clavulanic acid and sulfamethoxazole potentiated with trimethoprim. None of the tested isolates were resistant to these antimicrobial substances. Only two isolates were found to be intermediately resistant to enrofloxacin in 2020. With regard to ceftiofur, one isolate was intermediately
