Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock industry have been recognized as a kind of pollutant. The effect of Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) as an additive for the reduction of ARGs in animal sludge from livestock and poultry wastewater treatment plant during vermicomposting was investigated. We also evaluated the oxidative stress level and growth of earthworms, Eisenia foetida, bacterial community succession, and the quality of the end products. Two treatments were conducted using B. subtilis, one at 18 °C and another at 28 °C. Controls were setup without the bacteria. The results show

The aim of the present study was to determine the rate and mechanisms of resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramin B (MLSB) antibiotics of Staphylococcus aureus collected in Central Greece. Of the 2,893 S. aureus collected during 2012-2017, 1,161 isolates (40.2%) exhibited resistance to at least one of the MLSB agents. The rate of erythromycin resistance was statistically significantly higher in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) (58.6%) than in methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates (20.7%) (p = 0.002). Two hundred seventy-five representative MLSB-resistant S. aur

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota is a significant reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). The use and misuse of antimicrobials can select multi-resistant bacteria and modify the repertoire of ARGs in the gut. Developing effective interventions to manipulate the intestinal resistome would allow us to modify the antimicrobial resistance risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Applying shotgun metagenomics, we compared the composition of fecal resistome from individuals treated with triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori plus Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM-I 745 (Sb) versus triple antibiotherapy wi

There is currently only limited information on the antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance of Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., and Trueperella pyogenes from animals. The comparability of the data is hampered by the use of different antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and interpretive criteria. To date, standard broth microdilution methods and clinical breakpoints that are approved by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and are applicable to Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., and T. pyogenes are available. The lack of species-specific clinical breakp

In this study, the species diversity of staphylococci with inducible resistance to macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramin B (MLSB) isolated from clinical samples, sewage and river water was investigated. Inducible clindamycin resistance was tested using a D-test and macrodilution assays. Inducible cross-resistance (iMLSB phenotype) was examined by PCR of erm gene classes A, B, C, F, G, Q, T and 43. Although ermC was the most frequently detected resistance gene in iMLSB phenotypes of environmental staphylococci (61.2%), resistance genes encoding iMLSB were more diverse than in staphylococci

We characterized Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients during screening for multidrug-resistant strains to determine mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and conduct spa typing. We investigated 53 S. aureus isolates collected from different CF patients, excluding multiple isolates from the same patient. Genotypic characterization was based on spa type (protein A); staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type for S. aureus resistant to methicillin (methicillin-resistant S. aureus [MRSA]); and resistance to the most common macrolides, lincosamides, and

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are the most frequently isolated bacteria from the blood and the predominant cause of nosocomial infections. Macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramin B (MLSB) antibiotics, especially erythromycin and clindamycin, are important therapeutic agents in the treatment of methicillin-resistant staphylococci infections. Among CoNS, Staphylococcus hominis represents the third most common organism. In spite of its clinical significance, very little is known about its mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics, especially MLSB. Fifty-five S. hominis isolates from th

Resistance to macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin antibiotics is due to alteration of the target site or detoxification of the antibiotic. Postranscriptional methylation of 23S ribosomal rRNA confers resistance to macrolide (M), lincosamide (L) and streptogramin (S) B-type antibiotics, the so-called MLSB phenotype. Several classes of rRNA methylases conferring resistance to MLSB antibiotics have been characterized in Gram-positive cocci, in Bacillus spp, and in strains of actinomycetes producing erythromycin. The enzymes catalyze N6-dimethylation of an adenine residue situated in a highly

The diversity of clinical (n = 92) and oral and digestive commensal (n = 120) isolates of Streptococcus salivarius was analyzed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). No clustering of clinical or commensal strains can be observed in the phylogenetic tree. Selected strains (92 clinical and 46 commensal strains) were then examined for their susceptibilities to tetracyclines, macrolides, lincosamides, aminoglycosides, and phenicol antibiotics. The presence of resistance genes tet(M), tet(O), erm(A), erm(B), mef(A/E), and catQ and associated genetic elements was investigated by PCR, as was the gene

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive bacillus that causes erysipelas in swine. In recent years, erysipelas infection among swine in China has been increasing. A combined resistance phenotype to pleuromutilins, lincosamides, and streptogramin A (PLSA phenotype) was found in some E. rhusiopathiae isolates. The aim of this study was to identify the resistance genes responsible for the PLSA phenotype in E. rhusiopathiae strains and to map the genetic environment of the identified resistance gene. A total of 46 E. rhusiopathiae isolates from 31 pig farms in China were studied. Minimum in

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus is a foodborne pathogen commonly found in nature and food and can cause food spoilage and health issues. Although the prevalence of B. cereus in foods has been reported worldwide, the extent of contamination in edible fungi, which has become increasingly popular as traditional or functional food, is largely unknown. Here we investigated the prevalence, toxin genes' distribution, antibiotic resistance, and genetic diversity of B. cereus isolated from edible fungi in China.
RESULTS: Six hundred and ninety-nine edible fungi samples were collected across China, with 19

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of meningitis, sepsis and pneumonia in neonates in the United States. GBS also causes invasive disease in older infants, pregnant women, children and young adults with underlying medical conditions, and older adults. Resistance to lincosamides in the absence of erythromycin resistance is rare in GBS, but has been previously reported in clinical isolates, both on its own or in combination with resistance to streptogramins A and pleuromutilins (L/LSA/LSAP phenotypes).
OBJECTIVES: To retrospectively screen the A

The emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance through the food chain pose a significant threat to food safety and public health. Our nationwide surveillance of retail foods in China revealed alarmingly high resistance rates among foodborne Staphylococcus isolates, particularly to antibiotics targeting the 50S ribosomal subunit. Among these, Mammaliicoccus lentus (formerly Staphylococcus lentus) is a coagulase-negative species commonly found in food-producing animals and retail foods, increasingly recognized as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes. To elucidate the geneti

INTRODUCTION: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading etiological agent of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, as well as invasive infections that predominately affect adults over 65 and people with comorbidities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) nationwide surveillance has identified rising clindamycin and erythromycin resistance as a concerning level threat for invasive GBS infections. West Virginia (WV) is a rural state outside the CDC catchment area, therefore, we investigated 65 WV-GBS isolates identified in clinical specimens from various sources for serotype distribut

Plasmids play a key role in the genetic plasticity and survival of Staphylococcus aureus in challenging environments. Although many S. aureus plasmids have been described, still few studies portray the plasmid content of a given S. aureus population. The aim of this work was to characterize the plasmids carried by a collection of 53 S. aureus isolates collected in a large hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, and investigate their role in conferring resistance to several antimicrobial agents. Plasmids were present in 44 out of the 53 isolates and were grouped into eleven AccI restriction profiles. Pla

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are important contaminants in water systems, and their detection depends strongly on methodological sensitivity. This study compared three molecular platforms, high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR), hydrolysis probe-based qPCR, and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), for detecting ARGs in wastewater, river water, and seawater in Thailand. HT-qPCR enabled broad resistome profiling, detecting 325-336 ARGs out of 373 targets (87.1-90.1%), with aminoglycoside, beta-lactam, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, sulfonamide, mobile genetic elem

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a priority nosocomial pathogen with plasmids playing a crucial role in its genetic adaptability, particularly in the acquisition and spread of antimicrobial resistance. In this study, the genome sequences of 79 MSRA clinical isolates from Terengganu, Malaysia, (obtained between 2016 and 2020) along with an additional 15 Malaysian MRSA genomes from GenBank were analyzed for their plasmid content. The majority (90%, 85/94) of the Malaysian MRSA isolates harbored 1-4 plasmids each. In total, 189 plasmid sequences were identified ranging in siz

The fate and removal efficiency of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in livestock wastewater by microbial fuel cell (MFC) was evaluated by High-throughput quantitative PCR. The results showed that 137 ARGs and 9 MGEs were detected in untreated livestock wastewater. The ARG number of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin group B (MLSB), tetracycline and sulfonamide were relatively higher. Throughout the treatment process, the number and abundance of ARGs and MGEs significantly decreased. The relative abundance of tetracycline, sulfonamide and chloramphenicol re
