The Association of Traumatic Brain Injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and criminal recidivism.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to determine whether TBI or PTSD is associated with an increase in general or violent criminal recidivism among a representative sample of released prisoners. In-person interviews were conducted with a stratified random sample of individuals incarcerated with the South Carolina Department of Corrections approximately 90 days prior to the prisoners' releases. In addition to a variety of items and scales, respondents were screened for TBI and were asked

Mental Health in Offspring of Traumatized Refugees with and without Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Intergenerational transmission of psychological trauma and the impact of parental post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on offspring are controversially discussed. We studied 50 offspring (36 women and 14 men, mean age 42.1 years) of refugees who were severely traumatized as children at the end of World War II. From these, 25 of the refugees currently suffered from chronic PTSD, and 25 had no PTSD. Parental PTSD status did not significantly influence mental health [as per the Symptom Checklist (SCL)-90-R] or quality of life (assessed by the 36-item Short-form Health Survey) in their children.

Mild traumatic brain injury does not produce post-traumatic stress disorder.

It has been widely assumed that patients who sustain mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or post-concussive syndrome develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in response to their cognitive difficulties, diminished coping skills, or other losses. This study examined 70 patients who had previously been diagnosed as having either PTSD or MTBI. Each patient was asked to provide a highly detailed chronological history of the events which preceded, followed, and occurred during the traumatic event, to indicate whether they were rendered unconscious or had amnesia for the event, and to describe t

Cerebellar Contributions to Traumatic Autobiographical Memory in People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition characterized by recurrent re-experiencing of traumatic events. Despite increasing evidence suggesting that the cerebellum is involved in PTSD pathophysiology, it remains unclear whether this involvement is related to symptoms directly resulting from previous trauma exposure, such as involuntary re-experiencing of the traumatic events, or reflects a broader cerebellar engagement in negative affective states. In this study, we investigated the specific role of the cerebellum in PTSD by employing a script reactivatio

Sounds of danger and post-traumatic stress responses in wild rodents: ecological validity of a translational model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the wild, animals face a highly variable world full of predators. Most predator attacks are unsuccessful, and the prey survives. According to the conventional perspective, the fear responses elicited by predators are acute and transient in nature. However, the long-term, non-lethal effects of predator exposure on prey behavioral stress sequelae, such as anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms, remain poorly understood. Most experiments on animal models of anxiety-related behavior or post-traumatic stress disorder have been carried out using commercial strains of rats and mice. A fundamental que

Predictive models of post-traumatic stress disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety in children and adolescents following a single-event trauma.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the power of theory-derived models to account for the development of PTSD, Complex PTSD (CPTSD), depression, and anxiety in children and adolescents who had experienced a single-event trauma. METHODS: Children (n = 234, aged 8-17 years) recruited from local Emergency Departments were assessed at two and nine weeks post-trauma. Data obtained from self-report questionnaires completed by the child, telephone interviews with parents, and hospital data were used to develop four predictive models of risk factors for PTSD, CPTSD, depression, and Generalized Anxiety Di

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Relationship Between the Fear Response and Chronic Stress.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric condition that can develop following a physical, psychological, or sexual trauma. Despite the growing body of literature examining the psychological and biological factors involved in PTSD psychopathology, specific biomarkers that may improve diagnosis and treatment of PTSD have yet to be identified and validated. This challenge may be attributed to the diverse array of symptoms that individuals with the disorder manifest. Examining the interrelated stress and fear systems allows for a more comprehensive study of these symptoms,

Longitudinal changes of telomere length and epigenetic age related to traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Several studies have reported an association between traumatic stress and telomere length suggesting that traumatic stress has an impact on ageing at the cellular level. A newly derived tool provides an additional means to investigate cellular ageing by estimating epigenetic age based on DNA methylation profiles. We therefore hypothesise that in a longitudinal study of traumatic stress both indicators of cellular ageing will show increased ageing. We expect that particularly in individuals that developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases in these ageing parameters wou

From Biomarkers to New Treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causes debilitating nightmares, flashbacks and anxiety stemming from a catastrophic, often life-threatening traumatic event. Originally described in soldiers exposed to the horrors of battle, PTSD is now recognized in civilian victims of assault, natural disasters and mass casualty events. Most people experiencing trauma do not develop PTSD, so understanding neurobiological mechanisms is crucial to predicting risk and developing targeted treatments. There have been many studies seeking to find biomarkers for PTSD, and their results have converged on severa

The role of small extracellular vesicles in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) represents a significant mental health challenge closely associated with the consequences of traumatic experiences. Recently, small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have been recognized as vital elements in the facilitation of intercellular communication. This review delves into the potential roles and mechanisms of sEVs in PTSD, concentrating on their involvement in neural signaling, immune system reactions, and the modulation of molecular biomarkers related to psychological disorders. By integrating recent research outcomes, this article aims to provide fre

Ferroptosis as a potential therapeutic target for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The underlying mechanisms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are still not fully understood, creating significant obstacles for developing effective therapeutic strategies. Recently, ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, has been shown to play a role in several psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), stress-induced anxiety, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). While direct evidence for the role of ferroptosis in PTSD is still limited, an increasing number of studies suggest that the pathological features of PTSD may trigge

Repurposing Existing Drugs for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Chronic stress and traumatic events affect the psychological and physiological state of a person. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a type of psychological stress that occurs in critical situations that pose a direct threat to the life of the person and/or his or her loved ones. The prevalence of PTSD is increasing every year due to growing exposure to traumatic factors such as wars, natural disasters, and other crises. These events lead to severe psychological consequences, affecting a rising number of people worldwide. Currently, PTSD can be challenging to treat due to the complex nat

[Better identifying and understanding post-traumatic stress disorder in the elderly].

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is particularly common in the elderly, including those with cognitive impairments. We need to stress the importance of early detection to better understand the specific signs of this disorder in the elderly. Psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing are being explored for their effectiveness and adaptability with the elderly. Identifying post-traumatic stress disorder should be a shared responsibility, for the mental health of the elderly.

Atypical attention and saccade vigor in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Effective attention control is essential for behavioral adaptation to different environmental contexts. In Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) altered attention has been described in trauma-related and other emotional contexts. Nevertheless, atypical attention is also seen with neutral stimuli. The mechanisms of attention alterations in PTSD associated with neutral stimuli are poorly understood. The present study investigates alerting and orienting responses in PTSD participants using emotionally neutral stimuli in a saccade eye movement task incorporating both spatially predictable and temp
