MENINGEAL WORM ( PARELAPHOSTRONGYLUS TENUIS) AS A CAUSE OF MORTALITY IN THE RESTORED ELK ( CERVUS CANADENSIS) POPULATION IN MISSOURI, USA.

:  Meningeal worm ( Parelaphostrongylus tenuis) is an important cause of mortality of elk ( Cervus canadensis) in populations in the eastern US and has been implicated in the failure of several restoration attempts. From 2011 to 2013, the Missouri Department of Conservation translocated 108 adult and yearling elk from Kentucky (US) to southern Missouri (US) to establish a free-ranging population. From release in spring 2011 through August 2015, we monitored 167 elk (adult, yearling, and calf) to determine causes of mortality. Of 78 mortalities, 26 (33%) were linked to meningeal worm based on n

OCCURRENCE OF LUNGWORMS IN EUROPEAN WILDCATS (FELIS SILVESTRIS SILVESTRIS) OF CENTRAL ITALY.

The increasing focus on infections in domestic cats ( Felis catus ) has raised questions about lungworm distribution in wild hosts. To enhance knowledge of the occurrence of lungworms in enzootic regions of central Italy, we examined the carcasses of 16 European wildcats ( Felis silvestris silvestris). Adult nematodes, feces, respiratory flushings, and pulmonary tissues were collected at necropsy and then microscopically and genetically analyzed. Fourteen wildcats had single or mixed lungworm species. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus was the most common parasite retrieved, followed by Troglostrongyl

Cross-reactivity of the 31 kDa antigen of Angiostrongylus cantonensis - Dealing with the immunodiagnosis of meningoencephalitis.

The primary causative agent of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis (EoM) in endemic regions is the nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The occurrence of EoM was previously restricted to countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands; however, more recently, it has been reported from other regions, including Brazil. The commonly used diagnosis is detection of specific antibody reactivity to the 31 kDa antigen, which is derived from female worm somatic extracts. Here we report the occurrence of cross-reactivity to this antigen in sera from other parasitic infections, especially those that ma

Metastrongyloid infection by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Troglostrongylus brevior and Angiostrongylus chabaudi in a domestic cat.

The "cat lungworm", Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, affects cats worldwide. Recently, other cardio-pulmonary parasites, e.g. Troglostrongylus brevior and Angiostrongylus chabaudi, have been isolated from cats either for the first time or a long time after they were first described. This paper describes the first known mixed infection by A. abstrusus, T. brevior and A. chabaudi in a domestic cat. Biological and epidemiological implications of old and "new" metastrongyloid-caused infections in cats are discussed.

Canine angiostrongylosis in Italy: occurrence of Angiostrongylus vasorum in dogs with compatible clinical pictures.

This study evaluated the perception of veterinarians in including the emerging metastrongyloid Angiostrongylus vasorum in the differential diagnosis for dogs referred with appropriate signs. Veterinarians at teaching hospitals, private practices or kennels collected faecal samples from 606 symptomatic dogs in six different areas of Italy. The samples were examined with the Baermann technique. Fourteen dogs scored positive for A. vasorum, all showing different clinical pictures, with the most common reason for inclusion in the study being a combination of respiratory signs along with general si

The first report of Aelurostrongylus falciformis in Norwegian badgers (Meles meles).

The first report of Aelurostrongylus falciformis (Schlegel 1933) in Fennoscandian badgers is described. Routine parasitological examination of nine Norwegian badgers, at the National Veterinary Institute during 2004 and 2005, identified A. falciformis in the terminal airways of five of the animals. The first stage larvae (L1) closely resembled, in size and morphology, those of Angiostrongylus vasorum (Baillet 1866). The diagnosis for both A. falciformis and A. vasorum is frequently based on the identification of L1 in faeces or sputum. The potential for misclassification of an A. falciformis i

Pulmonary protostrongyliasis in a mountain hare from Italy.

An adult male mountain hare (Lepus timidus), shot during the hunting season on the slopes of Mt. Civetta (eastern Alps, Veneto, northeastern Italy), was eviscerated and diffuse nodular lesions of verminous pneumonia were observed. Adult helminths were collected and male specimens were identified as Protostrongylus pulmonalis. Histologically, a non-purulent interstitial pneumonia and a desquamative bronchiolitis and alveolitis, along with thickening of alveolar septa, were apparent in the nodules. In several enlarged alveoli, a large number of eggs and larvae of nematodes were found. This is th

In the eastern Mediterranean, the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis is absent or extremely rare according to recent surveys.

This study summarizes the findings of a comprehensive field investigation into the presence of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a zoonotic nematode responsible for meningitis, in selected regions of the eastern Mediterranean. Samples were collected from intermediate hosts (gastropods), definitive hosts (rats), and potential paratenic hosts (reptiles) across Cyprus and the northern part of Egypt. Reptile and gastropod samples were analysed using a species-specific and highly sensitive LAMP assay, while rats were dissected and examined for adult nematodes in their pulmonary arteries. All samples fro

Molecular insights versus morphological traits: rethinking identification of the closely related Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus malaysiensis.

BACKGROUND: The closely related Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus malaysiensis have been reported to coexist in Thailand and share similar hosts and life cycles. Recently, in an angiostrongyliasis outbreak in Thailand, both A. cantonensis and A. malaysiensis were found in the cerebrospinal fluid of affected patients. Morphological similarities, overlapping distribution, shared hosts and habitats, and the close genetics of the two Angiostrongylus species can complicate accurate species identification. Addressing these challenges, this study aims to evaluate whether a correlation b

A new diagnostic technique for identifying Angiostrongylus spp. larvae in intermediate snail species by examining the buccal cavity.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongyliasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The intermediate hosts of A. cantonensis are gastropods, and snail species such as Pomacea canaliculata play a key role in the transmission of human angiostrongyliasis. Detecting A. cantonensis infection in snails is an important component of epidemiological surveillance and the control of angiostrongyliasis. METHODS: In this study, a new method for diagnosing A. cantonensis infection in gastropods was developed by recovering larvae from the buccal cavity of three snail speci

Early Detection and Management of Lamanema chavezi infection in a llama (Lama glama) in Switzerland.

Lamanema chavezi is an entero-hepatic strongylid parasite specific to South American camelids. It has been reported only on few occasions outside South America. Due to its hepatic migration, it can cause extensive liver damage, leading to granulomatous and fibrotic hepatitis and manifesting with lethargy, anorexia, and even death. We are reporting the second case of L. chavezi infection in Europe and the first in Switzerland. The patient was a three-year old neutered male llama (Lama glama). Clinical examination revealed bloody mucous discharge from the anus. Fecal sedimentation/flotation reve

The therapeutic effect of tanshinone IIA in mouse astrocytes after treatment with Angiostrongylus cantonensis fifth-stage larval excretory-secretory products.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is an important food-borne zoonotic parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis and meningoencephalitis in humans. Excretory-secretory products (ESPs) are valuable targets for studying host-parasite relationships. ESPs are composed of a variety of molecules that are used to penetrate defensive barriers and avoid immune attack of the host. Tanshinone IIA (TSIIA) is a vasoactive cardioprotective drug that is widely used in studies evaluating potential therapeutic mechanisms. In this study, we will evaluate the therapeutic effects of TSIIA in mouse astrocy

Control of the Invasive Agricultural Pest Pomacea canaliculata with a Novel Molluscicide: Efficacy and Safety to Nontarget Species.

The golden apple snail Pomacea canaliculata is an invasive pest that causes extensive damage to agricultural production. P. canaliculata is also an intermediate host of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which causes human eosinophilic meningitis. In this study, the molluscicidal activity and safety profile of a novel molluscicide PBQ [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(pyridin-3-yl)urea] were evaluated. PBQ exhibited strong molluscicidal potency against adult and juvenile snails (LC50 values of 0.39 and 0.07 mg/L, respectively). In field trials, PBQ killed 99.42% of the snails at 0.25 g a.i./m2. An acute toxici

Eosinophilic meningitis due to A. Cantonensis revealed at autopsy.

Parasitic infection of the central nervous system could be fatal, and its incidence is rising due to increasing worldwide travel. Amongst the various nematodes, Angiostrongylus contonensis is the commonest and causes eosinophilic meningitis. It is a zoonotic disease produced due to the ingestion of raw or undercooked snails or slugs. Most cases of angiostrongyliasis are mild and self-limiting, but death can occur in severe cases lacking timely and proper treatment. Very few autopsy cases of A. cantonensis are reported. We present the case of a 32-year-old mentally challenged orphan male with e

Cytokine elevation in the mouse small intestine at the early stage of infection with the gastrointestinal parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus.

To eliminate pathogens, the initiation of an appropriate immune response is critical. When the gastrointestinal nematode, Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Hp), invades the small intestine, a type-2 cytokine response is initiated; however, this response is not sufficient to clear the infection, and chronic infection can ensue. In this study, the host defense against Hp was investigated in mice with a focus on the role of CD4+ T cells. To this end, tissues from the small intestine and mesenteric lymph node (MLN) were collected every day from just after infection until Day 5 because many previous studi
