Neuropsychological functioning in children with Tourette syndrome with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological functioning in children with Tourette syndrome (TS) has been characterized by subtle deficits in response inhibition, visual-motor integration, and fine-motor coordination. The association of these deficits with the tics of the TS versus co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has not been well understood because of small sample sizes and lack of adequate control conditions. We examined neuropsychological functioning in relatively large and well-characterized samples of children categorized as TS, TS-plus-ADHD, ADHD, and unaffected controls.

A Representational Similarity Analysis of Cognitive Control during Color-Word Stroop.

Progress in understanding the neural bases of cognitive control has been supported by the paradigmatic color-word Stroop task, in which a target response (color name) must be selected over a more automatic, yet potentially incongruent, distractor response (word). For this paradigm, models have postulated complementary coding schemes: dorsomedial frontal cortex (DMFC) is proposed to evaluate the demand for control via incongruency-related coding, whereas dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) is proposed to implement control via goal and target-related coding. Yet, mapping these theorized schemes to measured

Cognitive and physical impairment and the risk of stroke - A prospective cohort study.

The manifestation of cognitive and physical impairment in stroke patients before the acute event suggests accumulating subclinical vascular pathology in the brain. We investigated whether impairments in cognitive and physical functioning were associated with an increased stroke risk. Between 2002 and 2008, 8,519 stroke-free non-demented participants from the population-based Rotterdam Study underwent cognition and physical assessments including Mini-Mental State Examination, 15-word learning test, Stroop test, letter-digit substitution test, verbal fluency test, Purdue pegboard test and questi

Combined Effect of Red Wine and Mocha Pot Coffee in Mild Vascular Cognitive Impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Moderate daily mocha pot coffee intake has been associated with better mood and cognition in patients with mild vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). Similarly, moderate red wine consumption has shown protective effects on cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. The aim of this study was to explore the synergistic relation between red wine and coffee intake on mood and cognitive status in mild VCI patients at risk for dementia. METHODS: A total of 300 non-demented older patients with mild VCI were asked for coffee and red wine consumption and admin

Classical Stroop effect in bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a distressing condition. Its pathogenesis is not fully understood. Neurocognitive functioning, and particularly inhibitory control, is a potential biomarker that may improve our understanding of BN. A few small-scale studies have used the classical Stroop Colour Word Test (SCWT) in BN with contradictory findings. We examined SCWT performance in a large sample of people with BN (N=72), eating disorder not otherwise specified--bulimic type (N=43) and healthy controls (N=50). The results found no difference between groups on Stroop interference effect. These findings quest

Correlation of BDNF and CD4 with Cognitive Function in Patients with HIV Infection.

INTRODUCTION: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a global epidemic and is frequently associated with neurocognitive impairment, known as HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND). Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which regulates neuroplasticity, learning, and memory, may play a key role in this process. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between BDNF, CD4 levels, and cognitive function in patients with HIV. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, Indonesia, from July 2024 to January 2025. Fifty-eight HIV-positive p

Altered Low Frequency Heart Rate Variability Associated with Agoraphobia in Panic Disorder: A Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the clinical features of panic disorder (PD) with comorbid agoraphobia to those of PD alone. We focused on autonomic nervous system (ANS) alterations reflected in heart rate variability (HRV) and executive function deficits reflected in the Stroop test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively compared psychometric features, Stroop test results, and resting-state HRV across three groups: a subclinical group with anxiety attack history, a PD group without agoraphobia, and a PD group with agoraphobia. The subclinical group included 10 male and 34 female, th

Response inhibition deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Difficulty inhibiting irrelevant information may play a central role in the aetiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the present study was to determine whether OCD subjects (n=20) exhibit deficits in behavioural and cognitive inhibition compared with a clinical control group diagnosed with panic disorder (n=20). All subjects were administered a Go/Nogo task (a measure of behavioural inhibition) and a Stroop test (a measure of cognitive inhibition). OCD subjects made more commission errors on the Go/Nogo task, and they made more errors and displayed longer reaction times on

Performance costs when emotion tunes inappropriate cognitive abilities: implications for mental resources and behavior.

Emotion tunes cognition, such that approach-motivated positive states promote verbal cognition, whereas withdrawal-motivated negative states promote spatial cognition (Gray, 2001). The current research examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when emotion tunes an inappropriate cognitive tendency. In 2 experiments, either an approach-motivated positive state or a withdrawal-motivated negative state was induced, and then participants completed a verbal or a spatial working memory task creating conditions of emotion-cognition alignment (e.g., appr

Tourette's syndrome (TS): inhibitory performance in adults with uncomplicated TS.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder linked with frontostriatal dysfunction. Previous work has shown some evidence of mild performance deficits on a range of different tasks that involve inhibitory processes. The present study evaluated this in adult participants with uncomplicated TS. Interference control was measured using the Stroop and flanker tasks and a Stroop-flanker task that combined the inhibitory demands of both. Motor inhibition was measured using a letter continuous performance test (CPT) task and word CPT tasks that manipulated the inhibitory demands using co

Effects of Stroop task duration on subsequent cognitive and physical performance.

The strength model of self-control purports to explain why brief cognitive response inhibition tasks impair subsequent isometric handgrip endurance. According to the model, ego depleting tasks requiring self-control resources impair performance on subsequent tasks that also require self-control resources. However, several lines of evidence challenge this model, including evidence of improved exercise performance following longer cognitive tasks. Our study investigated the effects of cognitive task duration on (1) subsequent physical endurance performance, (2) concurrent cognitive task performa

Method development studies for repeatedly measuring anxiolytic drug effects in healthy humans.

Human experimental models for anxiety may serve as translational tools for translating preclinical psychopharmacological investigations into human studies. For the evaluation of drugs of which pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are unidentified, repeating measurements after drug administration is necessary for characterising the time course of drug effects. In experiment 1, a threat-of-shock paradigm and adaptations of the Trier mental arithmetic test and the Stroop colour naming test were repeated four times within a day to evaluate whether anxiety responses to this test battery remain sta

Homeopathy for mental fatigue: lessons from a randomized, triple blind, placebo-controlled cross-over clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in controlling attention can lead to mental fatigue in the healthy population. We identified one trial reporting a benefit in patients' attention using a homeopathic formula preparation. One component of the preparation was potassium phosphate, widely available off the shelf as Kali phos 6x for cognitive problems. The aim of this exploratory trial was to assess the effectiveness of Kali phos 6x for attention problems associated with mental fatigue. METHODS: We recruited student and staff volunteers (University of York) with self-reported mental fatigue, excluding any us

Combined Neurocognitive and Exercise Tolerance Testing Improves Objectivity of Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test.

CONTEXT: The Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) is a standard assessment of exercise tolerance utilized for exercise prescription following concussion and to inform decisions regarding return to play. One limitation of the BCTT is that interpretation of test results is dependent on individuals' self-report of symptom exacerbation with exertion. Symptoms following concussion are significantly underreported or unreported. Combining objective neurocognitive assessment with exercise tolerance testing may enable clinicians to objectively identify those requiring further assessment or rehabili

Executive dysfunction accompanying essential tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological diseases. New evidence suggest that ET is associated with cognitive disorders other than motor symptoms. We aimed to investigate executive dysfunctions, which are comorbid cognitive deficiencies that may accompany ET. The study was conducted as an observational, case-control study in the Neurology Department of Ankara City Hospital in a 3-month period. The "Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Evaluation Scale" was used to rate tremor severity. Both patients and control group were subjected to the Mini Mental Test, followed by the Stroop TBAG te
