Towards a Deeper Understanding of Cerebrospinal Fluid Transport in the Optic Nerve Subarachnoid Space: A Computational Approach.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics within the optic nerve subarachnoid space (ONSAS) are increasingly recognised as potential factors contributing to the pathogenesis of optic neuropathies, including normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). In this study, high-resolution T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were manually segmented and processed for greyscale analysis and pixel-intensity mapping, enabling anatomically accurate three-dimensional reconstructions of the ONSAS. These reconstructions were imported into OpenFOAM software for computati

Subarachnoid space of the optic nerve sheath and intracranial hypertension: a macroscopic, light and electron microscopic study.

PURPOSE: The optic nerve (ON) is an extension of the central nervous system via the optic canal to the orbital cavity. It is accompanied by meninges whose arachnoid layer is in continuity with that of the chiasmatic cistern. This arachnoid layer is extended along the ON, delimiting a subarachnoid space (SAS) around the ON. Not all forms of chronic intracranial hypertension (ICH) present papilledema. The latter is sometimes asymmetric, unilateral, or absent. The radiological signs of optic nerve sheath (ONS) dilation, in magnetic resonance imaging, are inconsistent or difficult to interpret. Th

A clinical prediction of skin to subarachnoid space depth in parturients undergoing caesarean delivery in a Nigerian population.

Few studies on the prediction of skin to subarachnoid space depth (SSD) in African parturients undergoing caesarean delivery are available. We undertook a prospective observational study of 402 parturients scheduled for elective caesarean delivery to determine simple and clinically applicable formulae for predicting skin to SSD. Additionally, the impact of patient characteristics and variables such as age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and body surface area on SSD was studied. We employed a Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression Model to predict SSD in normal weight, overweight, and obes

Taenia crassiceps injection into the subarachnoid space of rats simulates radiological and morphological features of racemose neurocysticercosis.

PURPOSE: Neurocysticercosis is a major public health concern. Although its eradication appears feasible, the disease remains endemic in developing countries and has emerged again in Europe and in the USA. Basic studies on neurocysticercosis are needed to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms and, consequently, to improve treatment perspectives. Much has been published on experimental parenchymal neurocysticercosis, but there are no experimental models of racemose neurocysticercosis. METHODS: Cysts of Taenia crassiceps were injected into the subarachnoid space of 11 rats. After 4 m

Compressive lesions of the abducens nerve in the subarachnoid space disclosed by thin-slice magnetic resonance imaging.

We evaluated the usefulness of thin-slice magnetic resonance (MR) imaging as a tool for diagnosing compressive lesions of the abducens nerve in the subarachnoid space. We performed thin-slice MR imaging of the brain stem in two patients with abducens nerve palsy. Thin-slice MR images showed the abducens nerves in the subarachnoid space and clearly showed compressive lesions of the nerves by a brain tumor in both cases. These findings suggest that thin-slice MR imaging is useful for the evaluation of compressive lesions of the abducens nerve in the subarachnoid space.

Evidence for rapid fluid flow from the subarachnoid space into the spinal cord central canal in the rat.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used as a CSF tracer in Sprague-Dawley rats. One group of rats received an injection of HRP in the cisterna magna and a second group was injected in the thoracic spinal subarachnoid space. The animals were sacrificed 0, 10 or 30 min after HRP injection by rapid perfusion with paraformaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. In both groups, there was rapid HRP labeling of brain and spinal cord perivascular spaces. HRP was present in the central canal in a pattern that was not consistent with flow from the fourth ventricle: in both groups there were segments of unlabeled cen

Platelets in the subarachnoid space. A cause of acute and delayed arterial spasm, intimal damage and cerebral infarction.

In nine baboons following intracisternal injection of a suspension of their own washed platelets, biphasic spasm was demonstrated by vertebral angiography. Constriction of the intra-arachnoid portion of the vertebral artery and the basilar artery was severe 10 minutes after the platelet injection, had begun to relax after one hour, but had returned on day 2 or 3. It persisted for about 8 days. The animals showed clinical evidence of neurological damage. At autopsy the vertebral and basilar arteries showed stripping of the endothelium, with adherent platelets, protein and other cells. There was

Quantitative assessment of cerebrospinal fluid flow and volume in enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces of infancy using MRI.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of enlarged subarachnoid spaces of infancy is unknown; however, there is radiologic similarity with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Adults with normal pressure hydrocephalus have been shown to have altered cerebrospinal (CSF) flow through the cerebral aqueduct. OBJECTIVE: To explore potential similarity between enlarged subarachnoid spaces of infancy and normal pressure hydrocephalus, we compared MRI-measured CSF flow through the cerebral aqueduct in infants with enlarged subarachnoid spaces of infancy to infants with normal brain MRIs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was

Mathematical modelling of the CSF system: effects of microstructures and posture on optic nerve subarachnoid space dynamics.

BACKGROUND: The pressure difference between the eye and brain in upright postures may be affected by compartmentalization of the optic nerve subarachnoid space (ONSAS). Both pressure and deformation will depend on the microstructures of the ONSAS, and most likely also on ocular glymphatic clearance. Studying these factors could yield important knowledge regarding the translaminar pressure difference, which is suspected to play a role in normal-tension glaucoma. METHODS: A compartment model coupling the ONSAS with the craniospinal CSF system was used to investigate the effects of microstructur

Subdural hematoma prevalence and long-term developmental outcomes in patients with benign expansion of the subarachnoid spaces.

OBJECTIVE: Benign expansion of the subarachnoid spaces (BESS) is a condition seen in macrocephalic infants. BESS is associated with mild developmental delays which tend to resolve within a few years. It is accepted that patients with BESS are at increased risk of spontaneous subdural hematomas (SDHs), although the exact pathophysiology is not well understood. The prevalence of spontaneous SDH in BESS patients is poorly defined, with only a few large single-center series published. In this study the authors aimed to better define BESS prevalence and developmental outcomes through the longitudin

The association of disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus with cognitive deficit in a general population: the Ohasama study.

Disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus (DESH) is the characteristic feature of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. We aimed to characterize the prevalence, development, and association of DESH to cognitive deficit in a large population. We reviewed the data of 1384 subjects eligible for the present study among 1590 participants who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the Ohasama Study, a population-based study in Ohasama, Japan. The participants with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score <  = 25 were assumed to have cognitive deficit and DESH was eval

Clinical Applications of Cine Balanced Steady-State Free Precession MRI for the Evaluation of the Subarachnoid Spaces.

The purpose of this article is to review the physiology of normal brain and spinal cord motion in the subarachnoid space, principles of cine balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), clinical applications, and the pitfalls encountered with this technique. The brain and spinal cord are dynamic structures that move with each heartbeat due to transmitted arterial pulse waves. Conventional MRI sequences do not allow anatomic evaluation of the pulsatile movement of the neural structures in the subarachnoid space due to limitations in temporal resolution. Cine b

Expression of c-fos-like immunoreactivity in brainstem after meningeal irritation by blood in the subarachnoid space.

The expression of c-fos protein was examined by immunohistochemistry in serial sections of brainstem following the instillation of either autologous arterial blood (0.3 ml) or mock cerebrospinal fluid (0.3 ml) through a catheter placed in the cisterna magna, or following catheter placement alone in pentobarbital-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. After injection, blood was distributed within the subarachnoid space surrounding the brainstem and in the region of the circle of Willis. c-fos protein-like immunoreactivity was present at 1 h, peaked at 2 h and decreased by 8 h. At 2 h, immunoreactivi

[Scanning the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord following endolumbar and cisternal administration of colloid solutions of radioisotopes].

The patency of the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord was studied by means of radioisotopes in 82 patients, among whom 18 had tumors of the spinal cord, 22 had herniation of the intervertebral disk, 18 had complicated fractures of the spine, and 11 had inflammatory diseases of the spinal cord and its meninges. Colloidal solutions of 198Au, 111In, and 131I were used for endolumbar and cisternal infusion. Scanning of the vertebral canal provides for the diagnosis of the level, degree, and extent of its compression caused by various vertebro-medullary pathologic conditions. The method is spari

Ultrasonographic Versus Anthropometric Measurement of Subarachnoid Space Depth in Adults Undergoing Spinal Anaesthesia: A Prospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of subarachnoid space depth (SSD) is crucial for successful spinal anesthesia. While traditional anthropometric methods are commonly used, their reliability varies, particularly in obese patients and those with spinal deformities. Ultrasonography offers real-time visualization but requires validation against established techniques. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on 56 adults (18-65 years) scheduled for elective surgeries under spinal anesthesia. Ultrasonographic SSD (USG-SSD) was measured preoperatively at the L3-L4 level using a c
