Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) comprises of less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Dedifferentiation/high-grade transformation (HGT) in AdCC is a rare but well known phenomenon which is associated with aggressive clinical behaviour and poor prognosis. We herein report the clinical, cytologic, histologic and immunohistochemical findings of a left submandibular gland AdCC with transformation to high grade carcinomatous and probable dedifferentiation to sarcomatoid component, occurring in a 64 year old male patient. The aetiology and pathogenesis of salivary gland malignancies remain unknown. To reveal novel molecular factors behind the development of salivary gland cancer, we performed gene expression analyses from Smgb-Tag mouse salivary gland samples. The overall purpose was to apply these results for clinical use to find new approaches for both possible therapeutic targets and more accurate diagnostic tools. Smgb-Tag mouse strain, in which salivary neoplasms arise through a dysplastic phase in submandibular glands, was investigated using genome-wide microarray expression analysis, ingenuity pathway an

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA), originally called mixed tumour, is the most common neoplasm of the salivary glands. It is usually a benign, slow-growing and well-circumscribed tumour. However, PA may occasionally give rise to metastases that usually occur after a previous recurrence. These tumours display benign histological features in both primary tumours and metastases. Such tumours have been termed metastatic PA or metastatic mixed tumours. We report a case of metastatic PA of the submandibular gland with metastasis to the cervical lymph nodes.

Striated duct adenoma (SDA) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm with limited cytologic characterization. We report a case of SDA with cytologic, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular correlation to further define its morphologic spectrum and diagnostic considerations. The patient was a 62-year-old male with a submandibular gland mass. Cytologically, the specimen demonstrated loose clusters of monomorphic epithelial cells ranging from cuboidal to rare elongated or slightly spindled morphology, with moderate amounts of variable oncocytic cytoplasm. Nuclei were ovoid and normochroma

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this

Kuttner tumor or chronic sclerosing sialadenitis is a benign inflammatory condition of the submandibular gland that mimics a malignant neoplasm clinically because of presentation as a hard mass. This is an underrecognized entity in the surgical pathology and cytology literature. We describe thefine-needle aspiration cytologic findings of 7 cases with histologic correlation. The 6 men and 1 woman (age, 47-72 years) had unilateral (4 cases) or bilateral (3 cases) submandibular masses known to be present for 1 month to 6 years (mean, 15 months). The aspirates were paucicellular to moderately cell

Pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) are the most common benign salivary neoplasms. PAs are generally slow-growing but may sometimes become aggressive and grow rapidly within a short period of time. Here, we report the case of an 83-year-old Chinese woman with an anterior neck mass that had been growing over the past 30 years. She felt uncomfortable because the mass had grown quite rapidly in the past year. The final diagnosis of a PA of the left submandibular gland was confirmed by histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations after surgical resection. Our patient recalled a history of an exci

Primary epithelial submandibular gland (SMG) tumours are uncommon, accounting for 8-12% of all salivary gland neoplasms, and most studies come from large specialised centres. There is little published about the relative frequency and outcome of SMG tumours treated in general hospitals. A retrospective study from two district general hospitals over a 10 year period (1996-2005). Seventeen benign (68%) and eight malignant (32%) tumours were included. A painless mass was the most common presentation. Pain and paraesthesia were not pathognomonic of malignancy. Pleomorphic adenoma accounted for all

Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms arising from the 3 pairs of major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual) or numerous minor salivary glands located throughout the oral cavity. This review discusses the role of PET/computed tomography (CT) in evaluation of SGTs, including staging, restaging, prognostication, and response assessment. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT is useful for staging and restaging malignant SGTs and offers important prognostic information in these patients. It is less useful for differentiating benign and malignant SGTs

The present paper describes the clinical and pathological features of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) of the parotid gland. This rare tumor represents <1% of all salivary gland tumors and arises most commonly in the parotid gland, but it has also been described in the submandibular gland, minor salivary glands and palate. EMC is considered to be a low-grade malignant tumor that may commonly recur locally after resection in 23-50% of cases. The complex and varied morphological expression of this neoplasm has attracted numerous investigators, who have presented valuable but often contra

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands. It accounts for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It shows slow and indolent growth rate, low probability of regional nodal metastases, high propensity for perineural invasion, multiple and/or delayed recurrences and high incidence of distant metastases. It is the most frequently encountered malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. The oral cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites followed by the parotid, submandibular gland, paranasal sinu

BACKGROUND: Oncocytic carcinoma (OC) arising in the submandibular gland is an unusual malignant neoplasm, with <20 cases previously reported. The cancer is characterized by numerous morphologically abnormal mitochondria present in the cytoplasm and marked cellular pleomorphism. At its most severe, the tumor may invade into the surrounding tissues, including intravascular, lymphatic, or perineural invasion, and lead to regional nodal or distant metastasis.
METHODS: The current study describes a novel OC case in a 46-year-old male, the youngest case of the review. The patient presented with a 5

We report a case of a 57-year-old man who developed a fibrosclerosing lesion in the submandibular gland and idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) involving the unilateral periureteral region within a year. Both lesions were resected surgically because of the suspicion of neoplasm. Pathologic examination revealed similar histologic and immunohistochemical features for both lesions, namely, fibrosclerosis with prominent hyalinizing collagen bundles and proliferation of myofibroblastic cells, and a non-neoplastic reactive nature. There was infiltration by lymphocytes with prominent lymph foll

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare clinical entity, and more so when it is present in two different locations. We present the case of a 38-year-old euthyroid woman with submandibular and lingual ectopic thyroid tissue in the absence of a normally located thyroid gland, diagnosed after the extirpation of an asymptomatic mass misdiagnosed as a neoplasm of the submaxillary gland. Despite its low frequency, the possibility of ectopic thyroid should be considered when making a differential diagnosis of neck masses, using ultra-sound, thyroid scan and ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

PURPOSE: Second malignant neoplasms (SMN) or second cancers may occur in 2-5 % of childhood cancer survivors within 5-25 years after diagnosis and treatment of a bone sarcoma. The most common are leukemia and breast cancer; salivary gland SMN are exceptional. To enhance the literature, we reviewed our patients with bone sarcomas and evaluated the incidence and outcome of salivary gland SMN.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied all patients with osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma treated at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli with chemotherapy from January 1983 to December 2012. There w

BACKGROUND This report describes the case of a 78-year-old man with neuroendocrine carcinoma of the submandibular gland. This is an exceptionally rare and aggressive malignancy, with only a limited number of cases reported in the literature. Due to its low incidence and histopathologic overlap with other tumors, its diagnosis and management remain challenging. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 78-year-old White man with no history of smoking or alcohol use and with no relevant comorbidities, who presented with a painless, rapidly enlarging left submandibular mass measuring approximately 6×4.

A rare tumor not easily classifiable among published histologic categories for salivary gland tumors is reported. The neoplasm developed within the submandibular gland of a 78-year-old woman with invasion of the mandible and metastasis to regional lymph nodes. Histopathologically, cuboidal cells possessing clear cytoplasm and displaced round nuclei proliferated and exhibited an adenomatous pattern. Many cystic spaces surrounded by tumor cell strands were seen, mucus substance filled in the cystic spaces, and the tumor cells seemed mucus-secreting, but neither epidermoid cells nor papillary app

We report a rare case of submandibular salivary gland carcinosarcoma ('true' malignant mixed tumour) which occurred in a 77-year-old man. Microscopic examination showed a neoplasm comprised of sarcomatous elements (chondrosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma) with tabular salivary ductal adenocarcinoma. A short review of the literature is also presented and the poor prognosis of these tumours, in spite of complete surgical removal and additional radiation therapy and chemotherapy, is discussed.
