Regional, demographic, and temporal trends in psychoactive substance use-related mental disorder and cancer mortality in U.S. adults: a nationwide CDC WONDER analysis (1999-2020).

BACKGROUND: Cancer remains a major global health burden, with 10 million deaths in 2020 and among the 35 million adults worldwide with psychoactive substance use disorders (SUDs), it is a major contributor to premature mortality. In the U.S., tobacco causes over 30% of cancer deaths and alcohol nearly 5%, highlighting the role of modifiable behaviors. Despite this clinical and economic burden, national long-term data on co-occurring SUDs and cancer mortality remain limited. We therefore analyzed 22 years (1999-2020) of U.S. mortality data from CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Preven

The effect of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists on substance use disorder (SUD)-related behavioural effects of drugs and alcohol: A systematic review.

Glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1)-receptor agonists have been proposed as putative treatment for substance use disorders (SUD). The objective of this systematic review is to characterize the effects of GLP-1-receptor agonists on SUD-related behavioural effects of drugs, nicotine, and alcohol. The review was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). A search was performed in PubMed and EMBASE on June 16, 2018. The inclusion criteria were primary studies investigating the use of GLP-1-receptor agonists on behavioural endpoints related to SU

The association between glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and/or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist prescriptions and substance-related outcomes in patients with opioid and alcohol use disorders: A real-world data analysis.

AIMS: This study aimed to estimate the strength of association between prescriptions of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and/or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) and the incidence of opioid overdose and alcohol intoxication in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD), respectively. This study also aimed to compare the strength of the GIP/GLP-1 RA and substance use-outcome association among patients with comorbid type 2 diabetes and obesity. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study analyzing de-identified electronic health record d

In Silico Pharmacogenomic Assessment of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP1) Agonists and the Genetic Addiction Risk Score (GARS) Related Pathways: Implications for Suicidal Ideation and Substance Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor (GLP1R) agonists have become widespread anti-obesity/diabetes pharmaceuticals in the United States. AIM: This article aimed to provide our current knowledge on the plausible mechanisms linked to the role of Ozempic (Semaglutide), which is generalized as one of the anti-addiction compounds. METHODS: The effects of GLP1R agonists in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and substance use disorder (SUD) are mediated, in part, through the downregulation of dopamine signaling. We posit that while GLP1R agonism could offer therapeutic advantages in hyperdopamine

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and their relation to diagnosed ADHD, sociodemographic characteristics, and substance use among patients receiving opioid agonist therapy: a Norwegian cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms may challenge sufficient treatment of substance use and mental disorders. The literature on the extent of such symptoms among patients receiving opioid agonist therapy (OAT) is scarce. This study examined ADHD symptoms using the ADHD self-report scale (ASRS) and the association between the 'ASRS-memory' and 'ASRS-attention' scores and substance use and sociodemographic characteristics among patients receiving OAT. METHODS: We used data from assessment visits of a cohort of patients in Norway. In total, 701 patients were incl

Research on Eating and Adolescent Lifestyle (REAL) 2.0: 15-year follow-up study of eating disorders and weight-related trajectories, mental health and substance use health from early adolescence to early adulthood-a Canadian cohort profile.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined how psychosocial risk and protective factors in adolescence shape mental health outcomes and other multimorbid conditions in adulthood, particularly among Canadian youth. The Research on Eating and Adolescent Lifestyle (REAL) 2.0 study was a 15-year follow-up cohort study designed to investigate how early etiological factors, including body image and disordered eating symptoms in adolescence, contribute to the development of eating, weight-related concerns, mental health and substance use health problems in early adulthood. In this paper, we describe the REAL

"Every Time I Go in There, It Gives Me Time to Reflect": A Qualitative Study of Patient Perspectives on Substance Use, Medications for Opioid Use Disorder, and Harm Reduction Following Hospitalization for Serious Injection-Related Infection.

BACKGROUND: Serious injection-related infections (SIRIs) have high morbidity and mortality, in part from incomplete antibiotic treatment, ongoing substance use and reinfection. Understanding how hospitalizations for SIRIs affect patient perspectives on substance use, harm reduction, and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the era of hospital-based addiction services will inform efforts to improve care. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews at Boston Medical Center with individuals hospitalized with SIRIs between 2020 and 2024. To ensure diverse experiences, we recruited quali

Continuum of care in hospitalized patients with opioid or stimulant use disorder and infectious complications of drug use-substance use/infectious disease integrated clinic compared to treatment as usual to prevent infection-related readmission (CHOICE-STAR): a study protocol for an effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) experience high rates of serious injection-related bacterial and fungal infections (SIRI), including cellulitis, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. These infections often require prolonged antibiotic treatment and result in frequent rehospitalizations, with over 50% of patients readmitted within 1 year. Few evidence-based interventions exist to optimize continuity of care for addiction, management, and prevention of SIRI following hospitalization. METHODS: CHOICE-STAR is a hybrid type 1 randomized effectiveness-implementation trial, guided by the Explo

Anti-cocaine Vaccine Development: Where Are We Now and Where Are We Going?

Cocaine is one of the oldest and most widely used illicit drugs in the world and is responsible for major worldwide medical and social problems. Drug addiction is a disease state where the body relies on a substance for normal functioning and develops a physical dependence leading to compulsive and repetitive use despite negative consequences to the user's health, mental state, or social life. The primary driver for the development of anti-cocaine vaccines has been the failure to develop effective pharmacological treatments to combat cocaine dependence. Despite several decades of research, no

Use of pharmacotherapies in the treatment of alcohol use disorders and opioid dependence in primary care.

Substance-related and addictive disorders are chronic relapsing conditions that substantially impact public health. Effective treatments for these disorders require addressing substance use/dependence comprehensively as well as other associated comorbidities. Comprehensive addressing of substance use in a medical setting involves screening for substance use, addressing substance use directly with the patient, and formulating an appropriate intervention. For alcohol dependence and opioid dependence, pharmacotherapies are available that are safe and effective when utilized in a comprehensive tre

The internalizing pathway to adolescent substance use disorders: mediation by ruminative reflection and ruminative brooding.

Two subtypes of rumination were examined in relationship to substance use and substance use disorders in adolescents. In the 8th and 9th grade, 521 adolescents completed measures assessing depressive symptoms, conduct problems, and reflective and brooding subtypes of rumination. In 12th grade, adolescents reported substance use and were administered the substance use disorders modules from the DISC. Path analyses conducted with data from 428 participants indicated that neither depression nor rumination variables significantly affected the presence of substance use. However, indirect effects of
