We report two cases of patients with chronic respiratory disease who experienced an asphyxia after aspirating a sucralfate tablet that occluded a lobar bronchus. In adults, a foreign body is a rare cause of acute respiratory failure from tracheobronchial occlusion. The sucralfate tablet has the physical property of expanding rapidly when wet (contact with mucosa). After aspiration, the tablet expands to a larger size and can occlude a lobar bronchus, causing acute respiratory failure. In patients at risk of aspiration, we recommend the use of sucralfate in liquid or suspension form.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that, in patients at high risk for radiation esophagitis (RE), giving sucralfate prophylactically would reduce the need for opioid pain medication.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients were enrolled from January 2023 to April 2025 at a single tertiary care center. Patients were randomized to receive 1 g twice a day within the first 5 fractions of radiation therapy (RT), with frequency increased during RT at the clinician's discretion, or standard supportive care. The proportion of patients who took any opioids over the previous 24 hours at the end of the treatment course w

OBJECTIVE: At present there are no well-established pharmacological approaches in the management of post-cholecystectomy alkaline reactive gastritis. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of sucralfate versus rabeprazole or no treatment on dyspeptic symptoms and endoscopic/histological signs in a population of patients with a history of cholecystectomy and evidence of alkaline reactive gastritis.
METHODS: Sixty dyspeptic patients fulfilling the following criteria of inclusion took part in this study: (1) a history of cholecystectomy; (2) no use of anti-inflammatory steroidal and non-

PURPOSE: Stomatitis is a major dose-limiting toxicity of bolus fluorouracil (5FU)-based chemotherapy regimens, despite the use of oral cryotherapy. Pursuant to preliminary data that suggested a sucralfate oral solution could alleviate chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, we developed a prospective trial to test this contention.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was designed. Patients were entered onto the study at the time of the first cycle of 5FU-based chemotherapy. All patients received oral cryotherapy for 30 minutes with each dose of 5FU.

Sucralfate is a basic aluminium salt of sucrose octasulphate which was orally employed for prevention and treatment of several gastrointestinal diseases including gastroesophageal reflux, gastric and duodenal ulcer. Recent studies have employed sucralfate as a topical drug for the healing of several types of epithelial wounds such as ulcers, inflammatory dermatitis, mucositis and burn wounds. Epithelial wound healing is a well orchestrated process involving hemostasis, inflammatory reaction, cell proliferation and tissue remodelling which leads to granulation tissue development and filling of

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that sucralfate, a gastric ulcer medication, would alter plasma concentrations of total carbon dioxide (tCO2), lactate (LA), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-) and total protein (TP), as well as calculated plasma strong ion difference (SID) and packed cell volume (PCV) in horses subjected to a simulated race test (SRT). Six unfit Standardbred mares (approximately 520 kg, 9-18 years) were used in a randomized crossover design with the investigators blinded to the treatment given. The horses were assigned to either a control (40-50 m

Mucositis is still a leading side effect of high dose chemotherapy and irradiation delivered in autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. In this double blind randomised study, we tested the efficacy of sucralfate for the prevention of mucositis induced by such conditioning treatments. Treatment was started one day before conditioning regimen and patients were prospectively evaluated. The main endpoint was severe mucositis that was more frequent in the placebo group than in the sucralfate group (47% vs. 29%, P = 0.07). This trend was confirmed after adjustment on total body irradi

BACKGROUND: Unblinded studies suggested that sucralfate prophylaxis for stress ulcers is associated with a lower rate of nosocomial pneumonia than acid-reducing approaches. We performed a randomized, double-blind, double-sham clinical trial comparing the exact microbial effects of each treatment.
METHODS: One hundred forty patients entered this study before major elective surgery, allowing baseline cultures of gastric and pulmonary secretions to be obtained intraoperatively. Postoperatively, the patients were treated with standard doses of either sucralfate or antacids, plus a sham of the oth

The adherence of a sucralfate-tetracycline complex to gastric ulcers and to nearby non-ulcer sites was determined in the rabbit antrum. Persistent gastric ulcers were produced by a previously described method. The presence of the complex was assessed 1 and 4 h after dosing. Drug adherence was determined by quantitation of aluminum in stomach wall biopsies. Significantly more aluminum adhered to ulcer sites than to nearby non-ulcer sites. Adherence of the complex did not significantly decrease from 1 to 4 h. The complexation of tetracycline to sucralfate did not alter the selective adherence of

The results of patients with chronic erosive gastritis treated with sucralfate (Venter) and cimetidine (Altramet) were compared. 50 patients were treated with 4.0 g of sucralfate daily and 42 patients with 1000 mg of cimetidine daily. After 4 weeks of treatment endoscopic assessment of 13 patients (26.0%) treated with sucralfate and 5 patients (11.6%) treated with cimetidine was normal. It was possible to heal only the erosions of 33 (66.0%) and 17 (40.5%) patients respectively, while the mucosal elevations remained. The result of examinations indicate, that chronic erosive gastritis is diffic

The incidence of nosocomial pneumonia in long-term ventilated patients has been reduced by stress ulcer prophylaxis with sucralfate. In a double-blind trial we studied whether gentamicin administered topically to the oropharynx (OPG) had additional clinical benefits in these patients. 67 critically ill adult patients fulfilled entry criteria for > or = 5 days on ventilation. The OPG group received 40 mg gentamicin, the control group received 5% dextrose topically administered to the oropharynx 4 times a day. During OPG, pharyngeal colonization rate (21 vs 44%) and tracheal secretion colonizati

A prospective, double-blind study compared the effectiveness of sucralfate suspension with diphenhydramine syrup plus kaolin-pectin in reducing severity and pain of radiation-induced oropharyngeal mucositis. Fourteen patients who received at least 4600 cGy to the oral cavity used one of the mouth rinses four times a day, beginning at 1600 cGy. Data were collected on daily perceived pain and helpfulness of mouth rinse, weekly mucositis grade, weight change, and interruption of therapy. Analysis of data revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups in any parameter. A

A randomised controlled multicentre trial was performed in 160 patients with gastric ulcer, proved by endoscopy and biopsy, to compare ulcer healing with sucralfate and ranitidine (double blind double dummy design) and to assess the effect of maintenance treatment with sucralfate on ulcer recurrence (double blind placebo controlled design). The healing rates were similar with 4 g sucralfate suspension per day and 300 mg ranitidine per day (82% and 88% after 12 weeks, respectively). Of the 109 patients with healed ulcers, 92 were entered into the maintenance trial and treated with sucralfate ta

A double-blind, randomized study compared the healing of gastric ulcer during a twice-daily regimen of 2 g sucralfate or 400 mg cimetidine. The patients received the tablets one-half hour before breakfast and one-half hour before bedtime. The study included 76 patients with endoscopically proven gastric ulcer. Patients with ulcers less than 3 cm from the pyloric ring and patients with ulcers less than 3 mm in diameter were excluded from the study. Sixty-four patients completed the study. Healing was endoscopically assessed at four-week intervals for 12 weeks. After four, eight, and 12 weeks, t

A multicenter double-blind study was designed to compare the relapse rates of peptic ulcers after initial healing with a cytoprotective agent and a histamine (H2)-receptor antagonist. Patients with endoscopically verified prepyloric or duodenal ulcers were treated with cimetidine 400 mg twice daily or sucralfate 1 g four times daily for a maximum of eight weeks; gastric ulcers were treated for up to 12 weeks. Patients with healed ulcers were followed up to 12 months, during which time anti-ulcer medication was not permitted. Control endoscopy was performed two to four and nine to 11 months aft

Bart syndrome consists of aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) and dominant or recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), associated with skin fragility and nail dysplasia. ACC in DEB is thought to be caused by trauma, the most cited cause being in utero formation of bullae consequent to friction of the limbs. Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) refers to a hereditary mechanobullous disease following trauma, characterised by formation of blisters on the skin and mucous membranes. There are four categories of the disease, including epidermolysis bullosa simplex, junctional epidermolysis bullosa, dystrop
