Fungal infections in Sudan: An underestimated health problem.

Fungal diseases are associated with high morbidity and mortality, yet their epidemiology and burden are not well addressed. While deaths probably exceed 1.5 million per year, many cases remain undiagnosed and underreported. Estimating the burden of these diseases is needed for prioritization and implementation of effective control programs. Here we used a model based on population at risk to estimate the burden of serious fungal infections in Sudan. The prevalence of the susceptible population including HIV, TB, cancer, asthma, and COPD was obtained from the literature. Incidence and prevalenc

Violence in Sudan: A Looming Public Health Disaster.

Sudan's ongoing conflict, rooted in colonial-era policies and resource competition, has led to widespread displacement, poverty, and social service breakdowns. The escalating power struggle between the Sudanese Army Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) exacerbates the humanitarian crisis by severely undermining the nation's health services and infrastructure. This leads to long-lasting social and economic consequences, creating a need for a coordinated response from national and international organizations to provide emergency healthcare, rebuild infrastructure, and tra

The genus Madurella: Molecular identification and epidemiology in Sudan.

Eumycetoma (mycotic mycetoma) is the fungal form of mycetoma, a subcutaneous infection occurring in individuals living in endemic areas of the disease. The Sudan is hyperendemic for mycetoma, with the highest incidence being reported from Gezira State, Central Sudan. The present study was conducted at the Gezira Mycetoma Center and aimed to determine the cause of black-grain eumycetoma in the state and describe its epidemiology. Black-grain specimens were collected during the surgical operation and direct detection of the causative agent was performed using M. mycetomatis species-specific PCR

Nocardiosis in Sudan: Current Situation and Future Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by Nocardia are rare, but misguided to clinicians, especially if there is a delay in the diagnosis and/or low response to chemotherapy. The incidence of nocardiosis is increasing constantly worldwide, and the situation is getting worse if we consider immunocompromised individuals, such as human immune virus (HIV) positive patients since they are at higher risk. Surgical amputation, although not common, but should be considered as a result in some cases that cause partial disability. AIMS: To throw light on the situation of nocardiosis in Sudan, the possible reaso

The ethnic distribution of sickle cell disease in Sudan.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most common inherited disorders of haemoglobin in Africa and it is expected that sickle cell trait varies in frequency in different areas in Sudan. An extensive literature search was carried out accessing the US National Library of Medicine, the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region resources, the Catalogue for Transmission Genetics in Arabs and papers and documents published in Sudan that included data on the prevalence of sickle cell anaemia and trait. Rates of SCA and trait varied in different areas in Sudan with the highest rates reported from Western and

Diabetic heel ulcer in the Sudan: determinants of outcome.

Heel ulceration, on average, costs 1.5 times more than metatarsal ulceration. The aim of this study was to analyze the determinant factors of healing in diabetic patients with heel ulcers and the late outcomes at Jabir Abu Eliz Diabetic Centre Khartoum, Khartoum, Sudan. Data were collected prospectively for 96 of 100 diabetic patients presenting with heel ulcers at the Jabir Abu Eliz Diabetic Centre Khartoum from May 2003 to January 2005. Late outcome was assessed 3 years later (February 2008). Heeling was achieved in one half of the patients (n = 48). In the remaining 48 patients, 22 ended wi

The prevalence of blinding trachoma in northern states of Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Despite historical evidence of blinding trachoma, there have been no widespread contemporary surveys of trachoma prevalence in the northern states of Sudan. We aimed to conduct district-level surveys in this vast region in order to map the extent of the problem and estimate the need for trachoma control interventions to eliminate blinding trachoma. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Separate, population based cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 88 localities (districts) in 12 northern states of Sudan between 2006 and 2010. Two-stage cluster random sampling with probability proportional t

The induction of cytochrome P450 1A1 by sudan dyes.

Azo dyes form a major class of chemically related compounds that are ubiquitous in foods, paints, printing inks, cosmetics, and also used as biological stains in histological and histopathological laboratories and clinics. Sudan I, sudan III, and sudan IV have been classified as category 3 carcinogens by International Agency for Research on Cancer. In this study, we investigated the difference between these three sudan dyes in induction of CYP1A1. We intraperitoneally treated Wistar rats with each of the three sudan dyes (I, III, and IV) for 3 days. Treatment of Wistar rats with sudan I produc

The burden of trachoma in Ayod County of Southern Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Blindness due to trachoma is avoidable through Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial hygiene and Environmental improvements (SAFE). Recent surveys have shown trachoma to be a serious cause of blindness in Southern Sudan. We conducted this survey in Ayod County of Jonglei State to estimate the need for intervention activities to eliminate blinding trachoma. METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS: A cross-sectional two-stage cluster random survey was conducted in November 2006. All residents of selected households were clinically assessed for trachoma using the World Health Organization (WHO) simplified g

Uncommon clinical presentations of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sudan.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sudan is caused by Leishmania major zymodeme LON1. Self-healing usually occurs within 1 year but occasionally its duration is prolonged and treatment is required. The clinical forms are ulcers, nodules and noduloulcerative lesions. Here we describe seven patients with uncommon lesions that were difficult to recognize as Leishmania infections. These included mycetoma-like lesions, lesions that resembled L. tropica infection and others. One HIV/AIDS patient had Kaposi's sarcoma with Leishmania parasites in the Kaposi lesions. Most of these uncommon clinical forms were

Present status of tick-borne diseases in Sudan.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases are widespread in the Sudan, cause substantial economic losses and constitute major obstacles to the development of animal wealth. Most important among these diseases are tropical theileriosis, malignant ovine theileriosis, cowdriosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and avian spirochaetosis. However, knowledge about ticks and tick-borne diseases is still fragmentary and far from complete. The large number of tick species, the multplicity of transmitted agents and the diverse ecoclimatic zones of the Sudan provide a unique opportunity to host diverse research activities
