Polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) was used in assessing the occurrence and risk of 12 widely used antibiotics and 5 most potent endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the Yangtze Estuary, China. BACKGROUND: The treatment of chronic bullous dermatosis of childhood (CBDC) so far has been limited to the use of corticosteroids and the sulfa group of drugs, e.g. daspsone and sulfapyridine. Furthermore, the therapy of CBDC cases with associated G6 PD deficiency is restricted only to systemic steroids. Previous studies of sulphasalazine in rheumatoid arthritis have chosen an empirical dose based upon its use in ulcerative colitis. In this study we compare the efficacy and toxicity of two doses (1.5 g/day and 3 g/day, 30 patients per group), and attempt to relate efficacy to serum levels of sulphasalazine and its metabolites. A very rare case of acetylsulfapyridine nephrolithiasis is presented in a 54-year-old female patient who had been prescribed sulfasalazine (6 x 500 mg/day) because of psoriatic arthritis for the last 9 years. The patient's renal function was only slightly impaired. Reflectance infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry allowed the identification of the chemical nature of the stone. As acetylsulfapyridine is a metabolite of sulfasalazine, administration of the latter drug was the cause of the nephrolithiasis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis, pemphigus vulgaris, and bullous pemphigoid are uncommon, but not rare, blistering diseases. Accurate diagnosis is essential so that prognosis can be estimated and proper treatment begun. The systemic drugs used in treatment can cause major complications, and careful monitoring is vital. Management is best achieved with a team approach consisting of a primary care physician and a dermatologist.

Sulfasalazine has been the mainstay of therapy for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease of the colon.
