Sulfur Dioxide Emissions and Market Effects under the Clean Air Act Acid Rain Program.

The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA90) established a national program to control sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from electricity generation. CAAA90's market-based approach includes trading and banking of Soumissions allowances. We analyzed data describing electric utility SO2 emissions in 1995, the first year of the program's Phase I, and market effects over the 1990-1995 period. Fuel switching and flue-gas desulfurization were the dominant means used in 1995 by targeted generators to reduce emissions to 51% of 1990 levels. Flue-gas desulfur-ization costs, emissions allowance prices, lo

Photochemistry of the Hydrogen Selenide-Sulfur Dioxide Complex: Formation of Selenosulfurous Acid and the Dehydrogenated Polyinterchalcogen Compounds.

Polyinterchalcogen compounds consisting of the O, S, and Se atoms are barely known. Herein, we report the synthesis of three O2SSe isomers from photoreaction between hydrogen selenide (H2Se) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) via the intermediacy of selenosulfurous acid (HSeS(O)OH). Specifically, photoexcitation of the chalcogen-bonded (Se•••S) molecular complex between H2Se and SO2 at 310 nm in an Ar-matrix at 10 K yields HSeS(O)OH as an elusive heavy analogue of sulfurous acid (H2SO3). Subsequent photolysis of the matrix-isolated HSeS(O)OH at 254 nm results in dehydration (→ H2O + OSSe) and also dehyd

The sulfur assimilation pathway mitigates redox stress from acidic pH in Salmonella Typhi H58.

UNLABELLED: Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi is the causative agent of typhoid fever, a human-restricted systemic infection. The rapidly disseminating multi-drug resistant H58 subclade is endemic in Africa, Asia, and Oceania, yet little is known regarding its intracellular behavior and virulence properties. It was of interest to understand the H58 response to host cell infection in terms of its response to acid stress and subsequent changes in gene regulation. We compared the H58 response in vitro and during infection of THP-1 human macrophages with the well-characterized response of Salmonel

Dietary sulfur amino acid restriction in humans with overweight and obesity: a translational randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dietary sulfur amino acid restriction (SAAR) improves metabolic health in animals. In this study, we investigated the effect of dietary SAAR on body weight, body composition, resting metabolic rate, gene expression profiles in white adipose tissue (WAT), and an extensive blood biomarker profile in humans with overweight or obesity. METHODS: N = 59 participants with overweight or obesity (73% women) were randomized stratified by sex to an 8-week plant-based dietary intervention low (~ 2 g/day, SAAR) or high (~ 5.6 g/day, control group) in sulfur amino acids. The diets were provided

Sulfur Amino Acid Restriction Enhances Exercise Capacity in Mice by Boosting Fat Oxidation in Muscle.

Dietary restriction of the sulfur-containing amino acids methionine and cysteine (SAAR) improves body composition, enhances insulin sensitivity, and extends lifespan; benefits seen also with endurance exercise. Yet, the impact of SAAR on skeletal muscle remains largely unexplored. Here we demonstrate that one week of SAAR in sedentary, young, male mice increases endurance exercise capacity. Indirect calorimetry showed that SAAR increased lipid oxidation at rest and delayed the onset of carbohydrate utilization during exercise. Transcriptomic analysis revealed increased expression of genes invo

Sulfur dioxide-releasing polymeric micelles based on modified hyaluronic acid for combined cancer therapy.

In this study, an amphiphilic polymer mPEG-HA(SA)-DNs was designed and synthesized to fabricate a multifunctional micellar system to enhance the therapeutic efficacy and reduce the toxic effect of paclitaxel (PTX). The polymer was prepared by introducing mPEG, stearic acid (SA) and 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (DNs) to the backbone of hyaluronic acid (HA). With above modifications, the fabricated micelles could encapsulate PTX in the core with high drug loading. The optimized PTX-loaded micelles had a mean size of 158.3 nm. Upon the effect of mPEG, the mPEG-HA(SA)-DNs micelles reduced the n

Contribution of reaction of atmospheric amine with sulfuric acid to mixing particle formation from clay mineral.

During dust storm, mineral particle is frequently observed to be mixed with anthropogenic pollutants (APs) and forms mixing particle which arises more complex influences on regional climate than unmixed mineral particle. Even though mixing particle formation mechanism received significant attention recently, most studies focused on the heterogeneous reaction of inorganic APs on single composition of mineral. Here, the heterogeneous reaction mechanism of amine (a proxy of organic APs) with sulfuric acid (SA) on kaolinite (Kao, a proxy of mineral dust), and its contribution to mixing particle fo

Dietary intake of sulfur amino acids and risk of kwashiorkor malnutrition in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Kwashiorkor is an often-fatal type of severe acute malnutrition affecting hundreds of thousands of children annually, but whose etiology is still unknown. Evidence suggests inadequate sulfur amino acid (SAA) status may explain many signs of the condition but studies evaluating dietary protein intake in relation to the genesis of kwashiorkor have been conflicting. We know of no studies of kwashiorkor that have measured dietary SAAs. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether children in a population previously determined to have high prevalence of kwashiorkor [high-prevalence popula

Role of sulfur containing amino acids as an adjuvant therapy in the prevention of diabetes and its associated complications.

Amino acid supplementation is gaining acceptance as an important adjuvant therapy in the treatment of diabetes and its associated complications. Numerous studies in the literature report the impaired amino acid metabolism in diabetes and the beneficial effects of amino acids are positively correlated with the increase in plasma levels of those amino acids. Oxidative stress is known to play a major role in diabetic pathophysiology. Sulfur containing compounds are well known in the treatment of oxidative stress induced pathological disorders. Methionine, cysteine, and homocysteine are the three

Degradation of free and sulfur-dioxide-bound acetaldehyde by malolactic lactic acid bacteria in white wine.

AIMS: Acetaldehyde is the major carbonyl compound formed during winemaking and has implications for sensory and colour qualities of wines as well as for the use of the wine preservative SO(2). The current work investigated the degradation of acetaldehyde and SO(2)-bound acetaldehyde by two commercial Oenococcus oeni starters in white wine. METHODS AND RESULTS: Wines were produced by alcoholic fermentation with commercial yeast and adjusted to pH 3.3 and 3.6. While acetaldehyde was degraded rapidly and concurrently with malic acid at both pH values, SO(2)-bound acetaldehyde caused sluggish bac

Associations of London, England, daily mortality with particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and acidic aerosol pollution.

During the extreme pollution episodes of 1952 and 1962 in London, England, excesses in daily mortality were clearly evident. In this study, we examined daily British Smoke, sulfur dioxide, acid aerosols, and weather variables for their short-term associations with daily mortality in the more typical (nonepisodic) winters of 1965-1972. Consideration of the acid aerosol data was of special interest because this chemical component has been suspected as a causal agent in past episodes. Temporal lag structures between the variables were examined after removal of long-term components from each serie

Genetic disorders of glutathione and sulfur amino-acid metabolism. New biochemical insights and therapeutic approaches.

Important insights have recently been derived from studies of inborn human defects of sulfur metabolism. Metabolic lesions responsible for homocystinuria have been elucidated, with possible implications for understanding atherogenesis in the general population. The cause of cystinosis remains enigmatic, but important information has been gained on the origin of some stored cystine from degraded protein. Cysteamine and ascorbic acid deplete the cystine content of cystinotic fibroblasts in vitro, and clinical trials with these agents have been undertaken. Studies of patients with glutathione syn

Imbalanced dietary methionine-to-sulfur amino acid ratio can affect amino acid profiles, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal morphology of piglets.

Animal protein sources such as fishmeal and plasma powder are excellent and indispensable sources of energy, amino acids, and minerals in animal production. Amino acid imbalance, especially methionine-to-sulfur amino acid (Met:SAA) ratio, caused by an imbalance of animal protein meal leads to growth restriction. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of imbalanced Met:SAA ratio supplementation of different animal protein source diets on growth performance, plasma amino acid profiles, antioxidant capacity and intestinal morphology in a piglet model. Twenty-four weaned piglets (castrat

Amino Acids as Sustainable Alternatives to Allergenic Sulfur Vulcanization Accelerators for Carbon Black-Filled Nitrile Rubber.

Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) is one of the most widely used elastomers in healthcare products owing to its excellent mechanical performance, chemical resistance, and durability. However, conventional sulfur vulcanization systems rely on accelerators such as tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD), 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), and 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG), which are associated with allergenic reactions and potential toxicological concerns. The replacement of these substances with naturally derived compounds represents an attractive strategy for developing safer and more sustainable ela

Building a High-Potential Silver-Sulfur Redox Reaction Based on the Hard-Soft Acid-Base Theory.

Sulfur holds immense promise for battery applications owing to its abundant availability, low cost, and high capacity. Currently, sulfur is commonly combined with alkali or alkaline earth metals in metal-sulfur batteries. However, these batteries universally face challenges in cycling stability due to the inevitable issue of polysulfide dissolution and shuttling. Additionally, the inferior stability of metal sulfide discharge compounds results in low S0/S2- redox potentials (<-0.41 V vs SHE). Herein, we leverage the principle of the hard-soft acid-base theory to introduce a novel silver-sulfur

Serum Sulfur-Containing Amino Acids and Risk of Maternal Gestational Diabetes and Adverse Growth Patterns in Offspring.

BACKGROUND: To estimate associations of sulfur-containing amino acids (SAAs) in the early trimester of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and estimate associations of maternal SAAs with adverse growth patterns in offspring. METHODS: We established a 1:1 matched case-control study (n = 486) from our cohort of pregnant women, and 401 children were followed up at ages 1 to 8 years. We conducted binary conditional logistic regression to estimate the risk associations of serum SAAs with GDM. Multinomial logistic regression was implemented to explore associations of maternal SAAs wit

Effects of sulfur amino acid supplementation on broiler chickens exposed to acute and chronic cyclic heat stress.

Chronic heat stress can result in oxidative damage from increased reactive oxygen species. One proposed method to alleviate the chronic effects of HS is the supplementation of sulfur amino acids (SAA) which can be metabolized to glutathione, an important antioxidant. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of dietary SAA content on broiler chickens exposed to HS from 28 to 35 d on broiler performance, body temperature, intestinal permeability, and oxidative status. Four experimental treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial consisting of HS (6 h at 33.3°C f

Sulfuric Acid Immobilized on Activated Carbon Aminated with Ethylenediamine: An Efficient Reusable Catalyst for the Synthesis of Acetals (Ketals).

Through the amination of oxidized activated carbon with ethylenediamine and then the adsorption of sulfuric acid, a strong carbon-based solid acid catalyst with hydrogen sulfate (denoted as AC-N-SO4H) was prepared, of which the surface acid density was 0.85 mmol/g. The acetalization of benzaldehyde with ethylene glycol catalyzed by AC-N-SO4H was investigated. The optimized catalyst dosage accounted for 5 wt.% of the benzaldehyde mass, and the molar ratio of glycol to benzaldehyde was 1.75. After reacting such mixture at 80 °C for 5 h, the benzaldehyde was almost quantitatively converted into a

Sulfur recycle in biogas production: Novel Higee desulfurization process using natural amino acid salts.

In this work, a desulfurization method using natural amino acid salts (AAS), which can be green prepared by biological fermentation, is proposed to remove H2S from raw biogas. Biogas purification and fertilizer production can be simultaneously achieved to close sulfur recycle. The reaction kinetic characteristics of H2S absorption with three kinds of AAS, including potassium β-alaninate (PA), potassium sarcosinate (PS) and potassium l-prolinate (PP) are first studied. Kinetic parameters including orders of reaction, rate constants, pre-exponential factors and activation energies are given. AAS
