Relationship between sun safety behaviours and modifiable lifestyle cancer risk factors and vitamin D levels.

BACKGROUND: Sun exposure is the most important environmental risk factor for causing skin cancer. PURPOSE: This study examines the relationship between sun protection behaviours and modifiable lifestyle risk factors for other cancers as well as vitamin D levels. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were analysed from two large national health surveys (n = 31, 445 and n = 5604). Sun exposure and protection were characterized by the presence of sunburn, duration of sun exposure, frequency of seeking shade, frequency of wearing a hat and frequency of wearing sunscreen. A Qualitative Exploration of Parental Perceptions Regarding Children's Sun Exposure, Sun Protection, and Sunburn.

Sun protection among children is of utmost importance since sunburn in early life is a major risk factor for skin cancer development. Because parents play a vital role in enhancing sun safety among children, this study explored parental perceptions concerning sun exposure, sun protection behaviors, and sunburn in children. Additionally, the context in which children experience sunburn in order to assist the development, optimization, and targeting of sun safety interventions for parents is revealed. A qualitative study design, using a semi-structured interview guide addressing several themes (

Skin cancer prevention: knowledge and perceptions of a nationwide sample of youth.

Context: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and incidence continues to rise. The leading risk factor for skin cancer is sun exposure in adolescence. Given this, sun protection in young adults is an effective way to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer. The goal of this study is to identify knowledge, behaviors, and barriers among young adults toward the use of sunscreen. Primary care physicians interact with a large number of young adults and have the ideal opportunity to counsel this population. Objective: To identify youths' knowledge and experiences with sun

Sun habits in the children of Southern Italy.

Skin cancer represents an increasingly worldwide public health problem. Because an estimated 50% to 80% of the skin's lifetime sun damage is thought to occur in childhood, it is during this critical period that excessive sun exposure is considered a risk factor for later development of skin cancer. Our objective was to investigate sun habits of children of Southern Italy. The population was a randomly selected sample of 800 parents of children who attended primary schools in Campania between December 2005 and September 2006. Interviews were conducted using a questionnaire, which provided infor

Summertime sun protection used by adults for their children.

BACKGROUND: Because an estimated 50% to 80% of the skin's lifetime sun damage is thought to occur in childhood and adolescence, it is during these critical periods that intense, intermittent sun exposure causing burning increases melanoma risk. METHODS: A 1997 telephone survey of 503 households evaluated parental attitudes about their child having a tan, and ease of practicing sun protection, sun protection methods used, and sunburning on 5 successive summer weekends. RESULTS: In a random sample of 1 child from each household, 13% of children sunburned during the past week or weekend, and 9%

Sun exposure and skin cancer development: nurses' attitudes.

To mark Sun Awareness Week next week, this article highlights the fact that the major contributory factor in the development of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and nurses are ideally placed to promote care in the sun and raise awareness of moles. The aim of this study was to determine whether there are any gaps in nurses' knowledge about the prevention and early detection of skin cancer. A total of 142 nurses were questioned about their own attitudes towards sun exposure, sun protection and mole awareness. The study showed that the nurses surveyed have a responsible attitude

From north to south: exploring Italian sun-exposure habits through the "Save your skin" campaign.

Sun exposure is the main external risk factor for skin cancer, affecting melanoma and non-melanoma differently. Although increased awareness of sun-induced skin damage and appropriate photoprotection has helped to reduce melanoma incidence, inadequate sun protection persists, influenced by geographical, social, and cultural factors. Italy's varying climates -from the colder north to the warmer south- impact sun exposure behaviours. This study examined sun protection habits from the 2023 "Save your skin" campaign to identify at-risk groups and support targeted education. Participants completed

Time to get serious about skin cancer prevention.

In this commentary, we discuss the skin cancer epidemic in the United States and provide data to indicate that the United States public is not protecting itself from ultraviolet radiation, the primary risk factor for melanoma, and nonmelanoma skin cancer. In our opinion, skin cancer control in this country may be hindered by uncertainty about the effectiveness of sun protection strategies, inconsistent messages about the relative effectiveness of sun protection measures by federal and national organizations, and conventional research approaches that have identified few effective sun protection

Immunologic protection afforded by sunscreens in vitro.

Several studies have suggested a lack of correlation between sunscreen sun protection factor and protection of the skin immune system, potentially allowing greater damage to the skin by removing the natural protective erythemal response to sun exposure. Despite this, routine testing of immune protection afforded by sunscreens is not performed by industry. Current laboratory methods for investigating the efficacy of sunscreen protection of epidermal immune function use the induction of contact hypersensitivity or epidermal cell alloantigen presentation. Animal models, cell culture systems, and

Sun Awareness and Sun Protection Practices.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of skin cancer has increased over the past few years, owing to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Over the past decade, protection against solar radiation has been highly encouraged in numerous public health education campaigns. The adopted sun protection practices include avoiding exposure to the sun, using protective clothing, and applying sunscreen. The aim of this paper was to analyze the awareness and attitudes towards sun protection practices in some regions of the Arabian Peninsula. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study is to estimate the

Repurposing consumer sunscreen habits and practices survey data to guide the development of UV filter environmental exposure models and risk assessments.

OBJECTIVE: A key factor that is deficient in most environmental emissions assessments for UV filters is a keen understanding of consumer habits and practices that can inform realistic exposure assessments. This study utilized a large volunteer survey (>11 000 persons) that captured many factors that affect consumer-based loadings to aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to utilize this large survey to identify factors that affect the amount of sunscreen products used by consumers. METHODS: Correlations among more than 20 variables were used to provide an understanding of the ove

Cutaneous Photoprotection: A Review of the Current Status and Evolving Strategies.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is well established as the major environmental risk factor for the development of melanoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Additional risk factors including genetic mutations, other environmental agents, and immune status are important in modulating the effects of UVR. Dermatologists advocate a multi-pronged approach to minimizing UVR exposure including lifestyle modifications, UVR protective clothing, and topically applied sun-protective products, i.e. sunscreen. Outdoor sunscreen testing with high-intensity solar exposure in a Chinese and Caucasian population.

BACKGROUND: Currently, sunscreens' sun protection factor (SPF) and ultraviolet (UV) A protection are tested separately under indoor conditions, without considering external conditions that may affect performance. Studies are often conducted in Caucasian individuals; other racial groups may respond differently. METHODS: An outdoor, double-blind, intra-individual study was performed in 63 healthy Chinese and Caucasian volunteers in Singapore. Subjects underwent one outdoor sun exposure lasting 2-3 hours. ISO reference products P3 (SPF 15), P5 (SPF 30), and P8 (SPF 50+) applied at 2 mg/cm2 were

Sun protection behavior beliefs among adults living in rural United States: A qualitative study in Minnesota.

Although skin cancers are considered mostly preventable, more people in the US are diagnosed with skin cancer than all other cancers combined. Sun safety recommendations include wearing sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, seeking shade, and using sunscreen. Some evidence exists that sun risk behaviors and skin cancer rates are more frequent among rural than urban US populations, raising questions about underlying factors. We conducted a belief elicitation survey on these four sun protection behaviors among 278 adults (aged 18-60 years) living in rural Minnesota, a state with high sunb

Real-time sun protection decisions in first-degree relatives of melanoma patients.

OBJECTIVE: Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer, and consistent use of sun protection is recommended to reduce risk. Yet sun protection use is generally inconsistent. Understanding the decisional factors driving sun protection choices could aid in intervention development to promote sun protection maintenance. METHOD: In 59 first-degree relatives of melanoma patients, an interactive voice response system (IVRS) on participants' cell phones was used to assess twice daily (morning, afternoon) real-time sun protection usage (sunscreen, shade, hats, protective clothing) and decision factors (

Parents' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs regarding sun protection in children: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood is a critical period for sun protection, when the skin is particularly susceptible to the carcinogenic effects of ultraviolet radiation. Children are dependent upon parents to implement sun protective measures. Existing qualitative research exploring parents' attitudes and beliefs underpinning children's sun protection is from Australia, which has the highest melanoma incidence rates globally, and thus benefits from widespread sun protection awareness campaigns. Parents' sun protective behaviour may, therefore, differ between Australia and the UK. This study investigates
