Predicting the Outcomes of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus: Applications of Artificial Neural Network and Support Vector Machine.

PURPOSE: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has been found to be effective for tinnitus management, although there is limited understanding about who will benefit the most from ICBT. Traditional statistical models have largely failed to identify the nonlinear associations and hence find strong predictors of success with ICBT. This study aimed at examining the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) to identify variables associated with treatment success in ICBT for tinnitus. METHOD: The study involved a secondary analysis of data from 228 ind

A combination of support vector machine and voxel-based morphometry in adult male alcohol use disorder patients with cognitive deficits.

Cognitive performance deteriorates with drinking. However, the neural basis of cognitive deficits in alcohol use disorder (AUD) is still incompletely understood. Here we examined the relationship between overall drinking, brain structural alterations and cognitive deficits in AUD. A total of 40 middle-aged AUD males and 40 healthy controls (HC) underwent high-resolution anatomical imaging scans, and the data were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry, support vector machine (SVM) classification and mediation analysis. The AUD patients demonstrated reduced gray matter (GM) volumes that include

The diagnosis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment by combining the characteristics of brain functional network and support vector machine classifier.

BACKGROUND: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is an essential stage of early detection and potential intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Patients with aMCI exhibit partially abnormal functional brain connectivity and it is suggested that these features may represent a new diagnostic marker of early AD. NEW METHOD: In this paper, we constructed two brain network models, a phase synchronization index (PSI) undirected network and a directed transfer function (DTF) directed network, to evaluate the cognitive function in patients with aMCI. We then built SVM classification models us

A computer-aided approach for automatic detection of breast masses in digital mammogram via spectral clustering and support vector machine.

Breast cancer continues to be a widespread health concern all over the world. Mammography is an important method in the early detection of breast abnormalities. In recent years, using an automatic Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system based on image processing techniques has been a more reliable interpretation in the illustration of breast distortion. In this study, a fully process-integrated approach with developing a CAD system is presented for the detection of breast masses based on texture description, spectral clustering, and Support Vector Machine (SVM). To this end, breast Regions of In

Characterizing the major sonographic textural difference between metastatic and common benign lymph nodes using support vector machine with histopathologic correlation.

Sonographic texture analysis can reflect histopathological components and their arrangement in metastatic and common benign lymph nodes. It is helpful in differentiation between metastatic and benign lymph node lesions for target selection during biopsy of multiple lymph nodes and the strategy of the management. Two ultrasound systems, 107 sonographic regions of interest (ROIs) of metastases and 174 sonographic ROIs of common benign lymph nodes, were recruited in the study. Thirteen texture features derived from co-occurrence matrix were used in characterization of above ROI ultrasound images.

Support vector machine classification-guided identification of novel monoamine oxidase-B inhibitors via structure-based modeling to treat neurodegenerative diseases.

Monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of dopamine and other neurotransmitters, contributing to neurodegeneration via increased oxidative stress. Elevated MAO-B activity is implicated in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Although several MAO-B inhibitors are clinically available, their therapeutic utility is often limited by poor selectivity, off-target effects, and suboptimal pharmacokinetics. Here, we developed an integrated computational approach to identify novel, selective MAO-B inhibitors by r

Predicting severity of cartilage damage in a post-traumatic porcine model: Synovial fluid and gait in a support vector machine.

The inflammatory response to joint injury has been thought to play a key role in the development of osteoarthritis. In this preclinical study, we hypothesized that synovial fluid presence of inflammatory cytokines, as well as altered loading on the injured leg, would be associated with greater development of macroscopic cartilage damage after an ACL injury. Thirty-six Yucatan minipigs underwent ACL transection and were randomized to: 1) no further treatment, 2) ACL reconstruction, or 3) scaffold-enhanced ACL restoration. Synovial fluid samples and gait data were obtained pre-operatively and at

An application of weighted support vector machines to individualized second-line therapy selection after levodopa in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by motor symptoms, with treatment responses varying widely across patients. To address the growing need for individualized treatment strategies, this paper introduces a practical framework for constructing optimal individualized treatment strategies using weighted support vector machines (SVMs). We construct an optimal rule as a function of patients' clinical profiles and demographics using two methods: Outcome-Weighted Learning (OWL), which assumes no unmeasured confounders, and Instrumental Variable Outcome-Weighte

From Support Vector Machines to Neural Networks: Advancing Automated Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Detection in Patients With Cleft Palate.

BACKGROUND: The generation of intelligible speech is the single most important outcome after cleft palate repair. The development of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) compromises the outcome, and the burden of VPD remains largely unknown in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To scale up VPD care in these areas, we continue to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for automatic detection of VPD from speech samples alone. METHODS: An age-matched, single-institution cohort of 60 patients (30 control, 30 with VPD after cleft palate repair) generated appro

Real-time breath analysis for COPD risk assessment in smokers using a ZnO/SnO₂ heterojunction sensor integrated with support vector machine.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressively debilitating and life-threatening respiratory condition that has long been attributed to exposure to airborne toxic substances like carbon monoxide (CO), a reliable biomarker of oxidative stress, especially in smoking individuals. To address the need for a real-time and non-invasive method that can detect this life-threatening condition, a wearable diagnostic device is developed in this work based on a Z/S heterostructure thin-film gas sensor that can detect exhaled CO at a temperature as low as 37 °C. This gas sensor was prepared
