OBJECTIVE: To compare the contraceptive efficacy of a new spermicide, bioadhesive nonoxynol (N-9) gel, with a traditional N-9 suppository.
METHODS: A total of 240 child-bearing aged woman volunteers were randomly divided into two groups: 120 cases using the gel for contraception, and another 120 using the suppository. Using lifetable method and log rank test, we compared the pregnancy rates and other discontinuation rates after follow-up for 6 months in two groups.

Meclozine hydrochloride suppositories were prepared with lipophilic bases, and the release rate of the drug from molten suppositories was investigated in vitro. Because of intolerance to oral steroids, a patient with Chronic Active Hepatitis and an active gastric ulcer was treated with rectal steroids in addition to azathioprine and carbenoxolone sodium. The liver function tests showed a marked improvement with this therapy, and the gastric ulcer healed. The possible advantages of steroid administration by suppositories are discussed.

We observed a rectovaginal fistula in 2 patients who had applied ergotamine suppositories against migraine headaches. The local effect of ergotamine on the rectum mucosa as well as the higher systemic concentration after rectal application seem to promote the development of a rectovaginal fistula. Different methods for the surgical fistula repair are discussed, depending on location and diameter of the fistula. In our patients we have carried out the abdomino-transanal resection of the rectum with sutured colo-anal anastomosis.
