The effects of phospholipid vesicles and divalent cations in the subphase solution on the surface tension of phospholipid monolayer membranes were studied in order to elucidate the nature of the divalent cation-induced vesicle membrane interaction. Rhamnolipids are attractive biosurfactants for enhanced oil recovery, but the commonly used producing strains may raise biosafety concerns. BACKGROUND: Disposable tonometers are increasingly being adopted partly because of concerns over the transmission of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and partly for convenience. Recently, we have found one such tonometer (Tonojet by Luneau Ophthalmologie, France) underestimated the intraocular pressure (IOP).
METHODS: We hypothesized that this underestimation was caused by a difference in the surface property of the tonometers. A tensiometer was used to measure the suction force resulting from interfacial tension between a solution of lignocaine and fluorescein and the tonometers.

Herein we report the structure and selected properties of a new class of biosurfactants that we have named the flavolipids. The flavolipids exhibit a unique polar moiety that features citric acid and two cadaverine molecules. Surface tensions of the 1-bromobutane with isomeric butanol mixtures were measured in the temperature range 283.15 K (or 298.15 K for 2-methyl-2-propanol) to 313.15 K with a drop volume tensiometer, and the corresponding surface tension deviations were calculated. Using this information together with bulk thermodynamic properties a thermodynamic study on surface formation was presented.
