Congenital toxoplasmosis in wild boar (Sus scrofa) and identification of the Toxoplasma gondii types involved.

Congenital toxoplasmosis has been little described in wild animals. We report a case of vertical transmission in wild boar (Sus scrofa). Necropsy and histopathologic examination of a pregnant female and her three fetuses revealed all to have lesions compatible with acute toxoplasmosis. Nested polymerase chain reaction B1 gene detected Toxoplasma gondii in maternal (heart and diaphragm) and fetal (central nervous system, retina, optic nerve, heart, lung, tongue, and diaphragm) samples. The mother had a mixed infection of T. gondii types I and III. One fetus with type III infection developed no

The impact of occlusal function on structural adaptation in alveolar bone of the growing pig, Sus Scrofa.

OBJECTIVES: this study investigated the effects of growth and tooth loading on the structural adaptation of the developing alveolar bone adjacent to the tooth root as the tooth erupted into function. Growth and occlusal function were expected to lead to increased alveolar bone density. Meanwhile, the supporting alveolar bone was expected to develop a dominant trabecular orientation (anisotropy) only after occlusal loading. DESIGN: minipigs with erupting and occluding mandibular first molars (M(1)'s) were used to study the effects of growth and occlusal function on developing alveolar bone str

Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella pseudospiralis mixed infection in a wild boar (Sus scrofa) of Germany.

A wild boar (Sus scrofa) from the island Usedom in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (north-east Germany) was detected as Trichinella-positive during routine meat inspection. Encapsulated and non-encapsulated larvae were detected in the muscle tissue by trichinoscopy. In the diaphragm, 922 larvae per g were detected by artificial digestion. Muscle larvae displayed two different sizes of about 700 and 1100 microm. By a multiplex PCR analysis, larvae with a large size were identified as Trichinella spiralis, whereas those of a smaller size were identified as Trichinella pseudospiralis. This is the f

[Morphological changes in the pineal body of domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) depending on light].

The cerebral epiphysis of twelve gilts, aged 6.5 months, was histologically, histochemically, and histometrically tested, after the animals had been kept permanently under artificial light, 100 lux, or in darkness, interrupted twice a day by two hours of lighting, over ten weeks altogether. The parenchymal cells of the epiphyses of the animals kept in darkness changed clearly from those of the other group with constant exposure to light. Changes in the darkness animals included significant enlargement of the cell nuclear volume by 33 per cent, increase in nucleoli count as well as increases of

Seroprevalence of Leishmania spp. in pigs farms (Sus scrofa domesticus): Epidemiological insights and zoonotic implications.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the Leishmania spp. an intracellular parasite which are transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Dogs have traditionally been considered the primary reservoir for Leishmania infantum, predominant agent in the Mediterrenean region. However, this parasite has also been identified in different host species, including wild animals and livestock. The role of farm pigs in the epidemiology of leishmaniasis remains unclear. The objective of this study has been to assess the seroprevalence of Leishmania spp. in farm pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) from intensiv

Sarcocystis spp. and Toxoplasma gondii in muscles from wild boars (Sus scrofa) consumed in Switzerland.

Sarcocystis spp. and Toxoplasma gondii are heteroxenous protozoan parasites, which form cysts in muscle tissue of intermediate hosts (IH) and oocysts in the intestinal mucosa of definitive hosts (DH). Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are IH for Sarcocystis miescheriana (with wild and domestic canids as DH), S. suihominis (with humans and non-human primates as DH) and T. gondii (with felids as DH). The aim of this study was to identify and characterize Sarcocystis spp. and T. gondii in the muscle tissue of wild boars hunted and/or consumed in Switzerland. DNA was extracted from muscle samples of 286 wil

Seroprevalence and genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in hunted wild boars (Sus scrofa) from Croatia.

Toxoplasmosis is a food- and waterborne zoonosis of a great importance, ranked as the fourth most important foodborne parasitosis in the world. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild boar (Sus scrofa) and to identify genotypes circulating in Croatia. A total of 103 wild boars from four hunting areas in Croatia were screened. Cardiac fluid samples were tested for anti-T. gondii antibodies by MAT, while heart samples were tested for T. gondii DNA using qPCR. The seroprevalence in the cardiac fluid reached 54.4%, while

Intra-abdominal heterotopic mesenteric ossification associated with intestinal volvulus in a sow (Sus scrofa domesticus).

An adult, female, mixed breed sow from a commercial breeding unit, with a clinical history of lethargy, poor body condition, hypersalivation, dyspnoea and reddened ears, was submitted for necropsy. Post-mortem examination identified the presence of an intestinal volvulus, which developed around an osseous intra-abdominal mesenteric lesion. Gross pathology and histopathology combined with post-mortem computed tomography (CT) of the mass confirmed the lesion as intra-abdominal heterotopic mesenteric ossification (IHMO), according to criteria applied to human disease. This report highlights a rar

Determining Intraosseous Needle Placement Using Point-of-Care Ultrasound in a Swine (Sus scrofa) Model.

OBJECTIVE: Intraosseous (IO) access is critical in resuscitation, providing rapid access when peripheral vascular attempts fail. Unfortunately, misplacement commonly occurs, leading to possible fluid extravasation and tissue necrosis. Current research exploring the utility of bedside ultrasound in confirming IO line placement is limited by small sample sizes of skeletally immature subjects or geriatric cadaveric models. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential value of ultrasound confirming IO needle placement in a live tissue model with bone densities approximated to the y

Parasite Prevalence in Feral Swine (Sus scrofa) from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA.

Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are an introduced species to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), US, and serve as carriers of several diseases that are considered a threat to other wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. During 2013 and 2015, fecal samples from 67 feral swine from the GSMNP within both Tennessee and North Carolina, US, were opportunistically collected as part of a feral swine removal program and submitted to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, Knoxville, Tennessee, for parasite screening by centrifugal sugar flotation. Ten taxa from the phyla Acan

Stress Assessment of Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) in Corral-Style Traps Using Serum Cortisol Levels.

Capture of wild boar in corral-style traps with subsequent culling is increasingly used for population management. The method is debated due to animal welfare concerns making welfare studies in traps necessary. While previous studies focused on behaviour and injuries, this study dealt with the physiological aspect. Cortisol levels in wild boar caught in corral-style traps (50-90 qm2, n = 138) were compared with those killed during single (n = 37) and driven hunts (n = 90). Collected sera were purified by solid phase extraction (SPE) and analysed via radioimmunoassay. Cortisol levels in blood s

Wild Boars (Sus scrofa, L. 1758) from Castile and Leon Region (Spain): A Histopathology Survey.

Wild boars are wild ungulates with a wide distribution in Europe, with a relevant role in wildlife and public health. In Spain, high (and sometimes artificial) densities of wild boars are responsible for several health problems. Regular surveys, with hunters' collaboration, are crucial to monitor these diseases. Histological analyses were performed for lung, liver, and kidneys from 72 wild boars (58 from Zamora, 16 from Palencia). Lungs were the most affected organs, mainly revealing parasitic pneumonia (34.7%). Hydropic, vacuolar, and other cellular changes (33.3%) and congestion (16.7%) were

Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Farmed Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) in Three Cities of Northeast China.

The apicomplexan protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a widely distributed etiological agent of foodborne illness. This parasite can cause production losses in livestock and serious disease in humans through consumption of contaminated meat. Pig meat is the most likely source of human infection, and wild boars may play a role in the transmission of T. gondii by serving as a reservoir host. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies to T. gondii among farmed wild boars in China. In an 11-month survey, a total of 882 serum samples were obtained from farmed wild boars fro

Focused post mortem dissection technique for harvest of rete mirabile in domestic swine (Sus scrofa).

BACKGROUND: Rete mirabile (RM) of the domestic pig is a popular animal model of arteriovenous malformations. The RM (Latin for 'wonderful net)' comprises the arterioarterial portal connecting ascending pharyngeal arteries and the internal carotid arteries, which exists in the skull base of even-toed ungulates. Although angiographic access of the RM is relatively easy, its post mortem procurement is complicated and its detailed technique has not been well described. OBJECTIVE: To present our focused post mortem dissection technique for undamaged and complete harvest of the RM. MATERIALS AND M
