The study highlights the presence of pathogenic strains of microorganisms in two swimming pools, highly frequented in the city of Yaounde. Thus, the water samples from these swimming pools have undergone physicochemical and biological treatments using conventional techniques. Three groups of microorganisms (Bacteria, Protozoa, and Helminths) were identified and quantified in these swimming pools with weakly acidic waters (6.79 ± 0.35) with an average temperature of 26.63 ± 0.53 °C and suspended matter ranging from 2 to 150 mg.l-1. The total bacterial load varies between 8 × 103 and 6000 × 103

Recently, increasing epidemiological studies have suggested a potential association between swimming pool attendance and allergic outcomes with inconsistent findings. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to elucidate the association between swimming pool attendance and the risk of allergic diseases. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase to identify relevant studies published up to August 8, 2025, and performed a meta-analysis of the extracted data. Furthermore, subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, and assessments of publication bias were also conduc

The release of chloroform from water to air in an indoor swimming pool (ISP) exhibits complex physicochemical interactions among many variables, including environmental conditions, occupant activities, and geometry of the ISP. By combining the relevant variables, a structured mathematical model, the double-layer air compartment (DLAC) model, was developed to predict the level of chloroform in ISP air. A physical parameter, the indoor airflow recycle ratio (R), was incorporated into the DLAC model due to internal airflow circulation resulting in the ISP structural configuration. The theoretical

Tinea pedis and onychomycosis often co-occur in individuals. A relationship between swimming pools and tinea pedis exists; however, little research has investigated the relationship between onychomycosis, tinea pedis, and swimming pools. This study sought to examine the prevalence of tinea pedis and onychomycosis among swimming pool employees, a population that may be at risk of tinea infections. Samples were taken from 169 employees at 21 swimming pools in the Netanya area, Israel. KOH microscopy and culture was used to identify fungi. About 46 % of swimming pool employees had concurrent tine

A case-control study was designed to investigate a chemical accident that occurred in a swimming-pool in the summer of 2005. The aim was to describe the environmental factors involved in the accident, to assess the effect of chlorine gas on the respiratory system, and to perform a clinical and spirometric follow-up. The following interventions were carried out: environmental inspection, epidemiologic survey (including sociodemographic variables), location at the time of the accident, perception of an abnormal smell, and clinical and spirometric outcomes to assess respiratory function. Sixty-fi

A 19-year-old male presented with a history of cough, shortness of breath, and fever, which started 6 hours after indoor swinging. His chest X-ray showed lung haziness and left-sided pleural effusion. A computed tomographic scan of the chest revealed bilateral lung infiltrates suggestive of pneumonia and left-sided pleural effusion. After the insertion of a 32 Fr chest drain, 900 mL of straw-coloured fluid was drained. The patient's condition deteriorated. He became hypoxic and haemodynamically unstable. Arterial blood gas analysis showed hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis. The patient had t

BACKGROUND: Postobstructive pulmonary edema (POPE) is a form of sudden onset, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema that can occur after the relief of an upper airway obstruction.
OBJECTIVE: Since POPE is an uncommon diagnosis made in the emergency department (ED), this case is presented to increase emergency physicians' awareness of the etiology, pathophysiology, and management of this type of edema.
CASE REPORT: This is a case of bilateral POPE in a 40-year-old man with no history of cardiac or pulmonary disease who experienced near suffocation due to the vacuum effect of a swimming pool cover. O

BACKGROUND: Bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH) is a chemical used as a disinfectant for recreational water. BCDMH was described as being responsible for an epidemic of irritant contact dermatitis in the UK (1983), and its sensitizing capacity was also discussed.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess whether BCDMH used to disinfect swimming pools and spas can cause allergic contact dermatitis among its users.
METHODS: Ten patients suffering from dermatitis associated with using swimming pools disinfected with BCDMH and 40 controls were studied. Several dilutions of BCDMH,

A previously healthy 23-year-old man with nonproductive cough and sore throat presented to the hospital a few hours after chlorine gas exposure at a fitness center swimming pool. Initial physical examination and chest radiograph were normal. Thirty-six hours later he developed worsening dyspnea and cough, with development of blood-tinged sputum. Arterial blood gas analysis showed mild hypoxemia and a subsequent chest radiograph demonstrated diffuse tiny nodular opacities. Findings on a thin-section computed tomogram of the chest were consistent with diffuse bronchiolitis. Pulmonary function te

Normal rats and rats drugged with atropine sulfate, a cholinergic muscarinic blocker, were evaluated in the Morris water task for their use of spatial navigation strategies. Atropine-treated rats were impaired on a place response of swimming to a platform hidden in a pool filled with opaque water. With extended training, they did learn the place response, though not with control precision, as shown by better than chance heading angles upon swim initiation, searches in the old location for a platform that had been moved, and by correct swims from novel starting locations. Acquisition could not

While chlorine and other pool chemicals can be used for the purpose of disinfection and pool maintenance, they also serve as a potential respiratory hazard. We report the case of a 13-year-old boy who presented to the emergency department after experiencing immediate dyspnea, drooling, coughing, nausea, and vomiting following an exposure to newly added pool chemicals. The patient's medical history included intermittent asthma with a recent history of an acute exacerbation two weeks before the inhaled chemical exposure. The treatment course following pool chemical exposure consisted of corticos

Trihalomethanes (THMs) are the most common species of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in swimming pools and have received widespread attention due to their risk to public health. However, studies examining within-day variation and the carcinogenic health risks from exposure to THMs in indoor swimming pools are limited. Our study aimed to detect the within-day variation of four THMs categories and carcinogenic health risk in indoor swimming pool water in Taiyuan, China, and to examine the correlations between THMs and environmental parameters. Our results showed chloroform (TCM) was the most ab

The most common cause of diseases in swimming pools is the lack of sanitary control of water quality; water may contain microbiological and chemical contaminants. Among the people most at risk of infection are children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised people. The origin of the problem is a need to develop a system that can predict the formation of chlorine water disinfection by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs). THMs are volatile organic compounds from the group of alkyl halides, carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, and bioaccumulating. Long-term exposure, even to low concentrati

Patients with swimming pool-acquired human adenovirus (HAdV) infections usually manifest characteristic clinical features that include fever, pharyngitis, and conjunctival inflammation, syndromically referred to as pharyngoconjunctival fever (PCF). HAdV types 3, 4, and 7 are most commonly associated with PCF. This article reports an outbreak of PCF that involved 55 students and staff at a university in Beijing, China. Fifty patients had used the same swimming pool 2 weeks before the onset of symptoms. HAdV type 4 was identified from patient eye and throat swabs and concentrated swimming pool w
