Stress can play a significant role in arterial hypertension and many other complications of cardiovascular diseases. Considerable attention is paid to the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the body response to stressful influences, but there are still many blank spots in understanding the details. ISIAH rats model the stress-sensitive form of arterial hypertension. ISIAH rats are characterized by genetically determined enhanced activities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical and sympathetic-adrenomedullary systems, suggesting a functional state of increased stress reactivit

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is observed in arterial hypertension, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and pulmonary pathology, particularly, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD in turn is a risk factor for developing these cardiovascular diseases and various arrhythmias. In the coronavirus disease (COVID) situation, such comorbid patients are the most vulnerable group with a high risk of adverse outcomes. The relevance of the relationship between COPD and coronavirus infection is explained by the similarity of clinical and pathophysiological manifestations, creating

Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts the integrated neuroendocrine network linking the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and sympathetic nervous system, resulting in endocrine and immune dysfunction. However, the effects of SCI on angiotensin II receptor signaling remain unclear. This study investigated temporal and lesion-dependent changes in angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) and type 2 (AT2) receptor expression following SCI in rats. Low-thoracic SCI (Th9 compression, 40 g/15 min) was evaluated over 28 days, while acute responses to partial (Th9) versus

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, with sympathetic nervous system (SNS) dysfunction as one explanation. This study examined the effects of burnout on responses of SNS activity measures to acute psychosocial stress in male physicians, a population at risk for burnout.
METHODS: Study participants were 60 male physicians, 30 with clinical burnout, assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and 30 without burnout (controls). All participants underwent the 15-min Trier Social Stress Test. Heart rate, blood pressure, salivary al

The cells that constitute the sympathetic nervous system originate from the neural crest. This review addresses the current understanding of sympathetic ganglion development viewed from molecular and morphological perspectives. Development of the sympathetic nervous system is categorized into three main steps, as follows: (1) differentiation and migration of cells in the neural crest lineage for formation of the primary sympathetic chain, (2) differentiation of sympathetic progenitors, and (3) growth and survival of sympathetic ganglia. The signaling molecules and transcription factors involve

The pivotal role of the sympathoadrenal system in the defense of le milieu interieur has, in the last 15 years, been extended to include the fat stores-a notion that forms the basis of current strategies for thermogenic stimulation in obesity therapy. The search for effective and safe sympathetic stimulants has been directed at two main levels: (i) the development of novel beta-agonists selective for thermogenesis, and (ii) the evaluation of drugs already in clinical use for other purposes (e.g. ephedrine) which could conceivably increase the release of catecholamines to levels that enhance th

The sympathoadrenal system functions as an adaptive and trophic system, ensuring increased vitality in humans and animals. Recent findings suggest that, in addition to its effects on muscle tissue, neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) may represent an important target for action of sympathetic mediators. Here, we presented experimental data on neurotransmitter release modulation by adrenergic ligands at the NMJs of mouse fast-twitch skeletal muscle levator auris longus. Adrenaline (but not noradrenaline) increased both spontaneous and evoked acetylcholine (ACh) release. This effect of adrenaline was

The adrenal glands are key components of the mammalian endocrine system, helping maintain physiological homeostasis and the coordinated response to stress. Each adrenal gland has two morphologically and functionally distinct regions, the outer cortex and inner medulla. The cortex is organized into three concentric zones which secrete steroid hormones, including aldosterone and cortisol. Neural crest-derived chromaffin cells in the medulla are innervated by preganglionic sympathetic neurons and secrete catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine) and neuropeptides into the bloodstream, thereby

Saliva secretion during feeding facilitates chewing, swallowing and other oral functions. Between meals, a "resting saliva" is elicited to allow speaking and contribute to maintain soft and hard tissues health. Chewing is the main stimulus for "stimulated saliva" secretion. Mouth dryness and other less well known stimuli control "resting saliva". In humans the stimulus of the light increases the parotid saliva flow rate. Saliva secretion occurs in response to a reflex. Both motor branches of the autonomous nervous system drive efferent outputs to the salivary glands. Cellular bodies of sympath

The adrenal gland, essential for survival, contains the medulla and cortex. Chromaffin cells (ChrCs) in the adrenal medulla control the fight-or-flight response by releasing catecholamines like epinephrine and norepinephrine. Recent findings reveal that ChrCs originate from two progenitors: 20% from developmentally early, neural crest-derived sympathoadrenal progenitors (SAPs) and 80% from the later Schwann cell precursors (SCPs). We generated functional adrenomedullary organoids from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) via both pathways and in mixed (20% SAP, 80% SCP-derived) cultures. When

The discovery in 1953 of the chromaffin granules as co-storage of catecholamines and ATP was soon followed by identification of a range of uniquely acidic proteins making up the isotonic vesicular storage complex within elements of the diffuse sympathoadrenal system. In the mid-1960s, the enzymatically inactive, major core protein, chromogranin A was shown to be exocytotically discharged from the stimulated adrenal gland in parallel with the co-stored catecholamines and ATP. A prohormone concept was introduced when one of the main storage proteins collectively named granins was identified as t

Reduction of excessive neurohumoral activation in chronic heart failure (CHF) improves the prognoses. In addition to reduction of angiotensin production or angiotensin II action and the influence of the sympathoadrenal system also blocking of aldosterone effects becomes part of the therapeutic procedure in patients with CHF. Excessive systemic and probably also local aldosterone production promotes undesirable fluid retention, hypokalaemia and hypomagnesaemia, induction of hypertrophy and fibrosis of the heart muscle and blood vessels and the development of endothelial dysfunction, peripheral

Fibromyalgia and widespread pain were common in Gulf War veterans with unexplained illness referred to a rheumatology clinic. Increased tenderness was demonstrated in the postmenstrual phase of the cycle compared with the intermenstrual phase in normally cycling women but not in users of oral contraceptives. Patients with fibromyalgia had high levels of symptoms that have been used to define silicone implant-associated syndrome. Tender points were found to be a common transient finding associated with acute infectious mononucleosis, but fibromyalgia was an unusual long-term outcome. The common

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BP) is often associated with a change in hypothalamus- pituitary-adrenal axis function change due to chronic stress. Salivary α-amylase (sAA) levels increase in response to psychosocial stress and thus function as a marker of sympathoadrenal medullary system activity. However, sAA has been studied less often than salivary cortisol in BP patients.
METHOD: We measured Profile of Mood States and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scores, heart rate variability, and salivary cortisol levels during electrical stimulation stress in 25 BP patients and 22 healthy volunteers.

Tenascin is a significant extracellular matrix glycoprotein, which is upregulated in various neoplasias and pathologic processes. Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors of the sympathoadrenal system, whose malignancy is almost impossible to predict. There are no histologic or chemical markers available that would define the malignant behavior of these tumors, except the discovery of metastases. In our search for new markers, we investigated the immunohistochemical expression of tenascin in a large number of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas. Seven tumors were metastasized and were thus considere

The carotid bodies, along with the superior cervical ganglia and the adrenal glands, were removed from rabbits and cats and the activity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis, was assayed by the method of Nagatsu (Anal. Biochem. 9: 122-126, 1964). The activities of the enzyme, in nmols tyrosine hydroxylated x h-1 x mg tissue-1, were: carotid body, rabbit 1.29, cat 0.84; superior cervical ganglion, rabbit 8.66, cat 4.97; adrenal gland, rabbit 0.95, cat 2.25. With respect to the carotid body, each of the following experimental procedures resulted in

In modern life, the use of plant stress-protectors has taken on particular significance due to the wide distribution of neurosis-like and neurotic diseases caused by neuroendocrine-immune system imbalance. Special attention has been paid to the plants containing ecdysteroids, i.e., hormone-like bioactive substances with high adaptogenic activity. The article deals with the study of bioactivity of two plant extracts as Rhaponticum uniflorum (L.) DC. and Serratula centauroides L. with a high content of ecdysteroids and phenolic compounds. The models of acute and chronic emotional stress in white

Yohimbine is an alpha 2-adrenoreceptor antagonist that acts to enhance sympathetic nervous system discharge and potentiate sympathetically mediated cardiovascular reflex responses. We therefore assessed the ability of yohimbine to increase sympathoadrenal discharge and raise blood pressure (BP) in patients with autonomic failure characterized by profound orthostatic hypotension. Yohimbine 5 mg orally in eight seated patients significantly elevated mean systolic BP by 33 mm Hg from 136 +/- 15 (mean +/- SD) to a maximum of 169 +/- 23 mm Hg (p less than 0.01), mean diastolic BP by 16 mm Hg from 7
