A syndemic of psychosocial health disparities and associations with risk for attempting suicide among young sexual minority men.

OBJECTIVES: We examined a syndemic of psychosocial health issues among young men who have sex with men (MSM), with men and women (MSMW), and with women (MSW). We examined hypothesized drivers of syndemic production and effects on suicide attempts. METHODS: Using a pooled data set of 2005 and 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys from 11 jurisdictions, we used structural equation modeling to model a latent syndemic factor of depression symptoms, substance use, risky sex, and intimate partner violence. Multigroup models examined relations between victimization and bullying experiences, syndemic heal

Application of syndemic theory to black men who have sex with men in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.

This study analyzed data from a large prospective epidemiologic cohort study among men who have sex with men (MSM), the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, to assess syndemic relationships among black MSM in the cohort (N = 301). We hypothesized that multiple interconnections among psychosocial health conditions would be found among these men, defining syndemic conditions. Constituents of syndemic conditions measured included reported depression symptoms, sexual compulsiveness, substance use, intimate partner violence (IPV), and stress. We found significant evidence of syndemics among these black m

Syndemic interactions in northwest Italy: education, place of birth, and the co-occurrence of type 2 diabetes and depression.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and depression often co-occur, generating substantial health burdens. Social determinants may shape vulnerability to both conditions. Using a syndemic framework, this study examines the clustering of T2DM, depression, education, and place of birth in a large cohort in Piedmont, Italy. METHODS: We analysed 861,300 males and 917,545 females aged 45-75 years from the Piedmont Longitudinal Study. T2DM and depression were identified from electronic health records; education was classified into three levels, and place of birth as Italy/high-income countries (HIC)

Intersectional stigma and the non-communicable disease syndemic in the context of HIV: protocol for a multisite, observational study in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidaemia, presents key challenges to achieving optimal HIV care outcomes among ageing people living with HIV. These diseases are often comorbid and are exacerbated by psychosocial and structural inequities. This interaction among multiple health conditions and social factors is referred to as a syndemic. In the USA, there are substantial disparities by social position (ie, racial, ethnic and socioeconomic status) in the prevalence and/or control of non-communicable diseases and HIV. Inters

Characterising a syndemic among black women at risk for HIV: the role of sociostructural inequity and adverse childhood experiences.

Objectives Black women disproportionately experience STIs (including HIV/AIDS), gender-based violence, substance misuse and mental health conditions. Addressing a gap in syndemic research, we characterised comorbidity overlap within the context of sociostructural inequities and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among black women in Baltimore, Maryland. Methods Between 2015 and 2018, black women (n=305) were recruited from STI clinics in Baltimore, Maryland. Among those with complete survey data (n=230), we conducted a latent class analysis to differentiate women based on their profile of th

Identifying Syndemics for Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Young Adults in the United States: A Latent Class Analysis.

PURPOSE: Syndemic theory suggests that the convergence of social, environmental, and ecological factors can interact to exacerbate behavioral health problems and are often intensified by social conditions and disparities. This study used latent class analysis (LCA) to determine gender and racial/ethnic specific classes for sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk. METHODS: LCA included 18 measured socioeconomic, depression, substance use, and sexual behavioral variables from 1,664 young adults ages 18-25 in the NHANES. Models were stratified by gender and then by race/ethnicity. Logistic reg

The syndemics of childhood diarrhoea: a biosocial perspective on efforts to combat global inequities in diarrhoea-related morbidity and mortality.

Diarrhoea remains the second leading cause of death in children under 5 years. Moreover, morbidity as a result of diarrhoea is high particularly in marginalised communities. Frequent bouts of diarrhoea have deleterious and irreversible effects on physical and cognitive development. Children are especially vulnerable given their inability to mount an active immune response to pathogen exposure. Biological limitations are exacerbated by the long-term effects of poverty, including reduced nutrition, poor hygiene and deprived home environments. Drawing from available literature, this paper uses sy

Exploring Psychosocial and Structural Syndemic Effects as Predictors of HIV Risk Behaviors Among Black Women (HPTN 064).

Background: Syndemic models have been used in previous studies exploring HIV-related outcomes; however, these models do not fully consider intersecting psychosocial (e.g., substance use, depressive symptoms) and structural factors (unstable housing, concentrated housing vacancy) that influence the lived experiences of women. Therefore, there is a need to explore the syndemic effects of psychosocial and structural factors on HIV risk behaviors to better explain the multilevel factors shaping HIV disparities among black women. Methods: This analysis uses baseline data (May 2009-August 2010) from

Syndemic Profiles and Sexual Health Risks Among Sexually Exploited Adolescent Girls in Taiwan: A Latent Class Analysis.

Sexually exploited adolescent girls are disproportionately affected by adverse psychosocial conditions, such as intra-familial child physical and sexual abuse, extra-familial violence and sexual assault, alcohol and drug use, and suicide. Syndemic theory suggests that these adverse psychosocial or syndemic conditions are concentrated and co-occurring in socially marginalized populations, including sexually exploited adolescents, and increase their sexual health risks, including pregnancy, abortion, and the acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). To examine clusters of syndemic con

The homeless population during the COVID-19 syndemic: Inequities, practices of social resilience, and social reintegration strategies.

This paper analyses the amplification of social insecurity and the social misrecognition of the homeless during the COVID-19 syndemic. The research was carried out in the city of Bergamo (IT), which has been severely affected by the COVID-19 syndemic since the early months of 2020; the research was developed in two phases. The first one analyses the practices of social resilience activated during the COVID-19 syndemic by the socio-educational staff and the coordination figures who work in the support services. The second phase analyses the different social dynamics that can improve the wellbei

A syndemic examination of injecting drug use, incarceration and multiple drug-related harms in French opioid users.

PURPOSE: People who inject drugs (PWID) face multiple health problems, including infectious diseases and drug overdoses. Applying syndemic and risk environment frameworks, this paper aims to examine the co-occurrence and clustering of drug-related harms and their association with incarceration experience with or without in-prison drug injection. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors used data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2015 among 557 active opioid injectors. Self-reported data were collected through face-to-face or online questionnaires. They distinguished three harm catego

Syndemic Conditions, Sexual Risk Behavior, and HIV Infection Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Taiwan.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to constitute the majority of HIV incidence in Taiwan. This study examined the associations between five co-occurring psychosocial health conditions (PHCs)-childhood physical abuse (CPA), childhood sexual abuse (CSA), intimate partner violence (IPV), internalized homophobia (IH), and methamphetamine use (MU), and two outcomes (HIV infection and condomless anal sex) among a community sample of 1,000 Taiwanese MSM (mean age 28.5 years). Compared to MSM who had never experienced any PHC, MSM with one or more PHCs had greater than twofold higher odds of bei

A Longitudinal Investigation of Syndemic Conditions Among Young Gay, Bisexual, and Other MSM: The P18 Cohort Study.

The persistence of disparities in STI/HIV risk among a new generation of emerging adult gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) warrant holistic frameworks and new methodologies for investigating the behaviors related to STI/HIV in this group. In order to better understand the continued existence of these disparities in STI/HIV risk among YMSM, the present study evaluated the presence and persistence of syndemic conditions among YMSM by examining the co-occurrence of alcohol and drug use, unprotected sexual behavior, and mental health burden over time. Four waves of data, col

Intersecting Epidemics: A Multilevel Syndemic Analysis of a Chikungunya Virus Epidemic in Colombia Through Clinical, Biological, and Socioeconomic Factors.

UNLABELLED: This study applied a syndemic framework to chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection during the 2014-2015 Colombian epidemic, integrating biological and social determinants. METHODS: A community-based cohort of 279 serologically confirmed adults from six cities was analyzed. Clinical, sociodemographic, and cytokine data were evaluated using multilevel and multivariate statistical approaches. RESULTS: Among 279 patients, 141 (50.5%) met World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for acute CHIKV infection. The cohort was predominantly female and of lower socioeconomic status (SES). The mos

Parenting under the triple burden of violence, depression, and poor diet quality: An intergenerational mother-child syndemic in Nepal.

Parenting while experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV), depression, and poor diet quality can contribute to child health inequities. Syndemic theory offers a framework to understand how maternal conditions can lead to inequitable child health outcomes, such as diarrheal disease: a risk factor for childhood mortality and stunting. This study uses the 2022 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey to test an intergenerational syndemic model addressing three key questions: (1) Do IPV, depression, and absent dietary iron intake co-occur among mothers? (2) Does the probability of child diarrhea inc

Syndemic mapping of HIV and other STIs in KwaZulu-Natal: a Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling approach using latent constructs.

Syndemics involving Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, and understanding their spatial and temporal dynamics is critical for effective interventions. Using data from two consecutive, population-based cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2014 and 2015 under the HIV Incidence Provincial Surveillance System (HIPSS) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, we applied a Bayesian spatio-temporal framework grounded in latent variable modeling to quantify and map the syndemic burden of HIV and other S

COVID-19 Syndemic: Convergence of COVID-19, Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CAPA), Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and Arterial Hypertension.

Bacterial coinfections, which increase the severity of respiratory viral infections, are frequent causes of mortality in influenza pandemics but have not been well characterized in patients with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Moreover, the association of COVID-19 infection with pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosis disease (TB) and concurrent pulmonary fungal infection is not well known. The classification of patients with COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) using the current definitions for invasive fungal diseases has proven difficult. In this study, we aimed to provide i

Syndemic anemia in British Malaya: An early global health encounter with hookworm and malaria co-infections in plantation workers.

With the establishment of the International Health Commission in 1913, the Rockefeller Foundation sought governmental partnerships overseas to combat hookworm disease and improve feces disposal practices. In the Madras Presidency in British India, the India Research Fund Association carried out hookworm surveys but failed in its educational efforts to improve feces disposal practices. In British Malaya, the Uncinariasis [Hookworm] Commission to the Orient discovered a syndemic of anemia among Tamil plantation laborers from the Madras Presidency and Chinese laborers from southern China who suff

Gendered syndemic of intimate partner violence, alcohol misuse, and HIV risk among peri-urban, heterosexual men in South Africa.

Men whose sexual behaviors place them at risk of HIV often exhibit a "cluster" of behaviors, including alcohol misuse and violence against women. Called the "Substance Abuse, Violence and AIDS (SAVA) syndemic," this intersecting set of issues is poorly understood among heterosexual men in sub-Saharan Africa. We aim to determine cross-sectional associations between men's use of alcohol, violence, and HIV risk behaviors using a gendered syndemics lens. We conducted a baseline survey with men in an informal, peri-urban settlement near Johannesburg (Jan-Aug 2016). Audio-assisted, self-completed qu
