Disorders of the sense of taste were studied in 355 patients with craniocerebral pathology, among whom 70 had tumors of the acoustic nerve, 64 had a craniocerebral trauma, 60 had tumors of the cerebral hemispheres. The most coarse disorders with the loss of the sense of taste on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue were encountered in tumors of the acoustic nerve and in transverse infracture of the pyramid of the temporal bone. Longitudinal infractures of the pyramid usually cause a diminished sense of taste on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue in the acute period, with improvment of the taste in the l

Separate taste examinations of each area of gustatory innervation are necessary in clinical practice in treating patients with taste disorders. We have developed our own electrogustometer with a dB scale and qualitative and quantitative clinical gustometry using filter-paper discs (the filter-paper disc method). this paper reports on our main basic studies in this field and new insights and experience gained in connection with the two gustometry procedures. Reference is made to the gustatory pathway, innervation area on the tongue and the soft palate, the argument against the localization theo

Age-related taste dysfunction impairs nutrition and quality of life, contributing to metabolic disorders and frailty in the elderly, yet its cellular and molecular basis remains poorly understood. By integrating single-cell RNA and spatial transcriptomics sequencing, we systematically mapped murine taste bud aging across five developmental stages from neonatal to aged. Our findings reveal that age-associated taste impairment is driven by the progressive depletion of stem/progenitor cell differentiation capacity, predominantly characterized in the posterior tongue, and mediated by inflamm-aging

CONCLUSION: Quantitative gustatory alterations are rare after microlaryngoscopy (MLS), whereas transient qualitative taste distortions occur more often. Patients undergoing MLS should know that mild but transient qualitative taste disorders may occur.
OBJECTIVE: Suspension MLS requires neck extension and tongue compression. Little is known about taste disorders following MLS. To investigate qualitative and quantitative gustatory function after MLS we tested and questioned patients before and several weeks after the MLS.

Little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying drug-induced taste disorders, which can cause malnutrition and reduce quality of life. One of taste disorders is known adverse effects of bisphosphonates, which are administered as anti-osteoporotic drugs. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effects of risedronate (a bisphosphonate) on taste bud cells. Expression analyses revealed that farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS, a key enzyme in the mevalonate pathway) was present in a subset of mouse taste bud and tongue epithelial cells, especially type III sour-sensitive taste cells.

Chemotherapy-induced taste disorder is one of the critical issues in cancer therapy. Bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor, is a key agent in multiple myeloma therapy, but it induces a taste disorder. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of bortezomib-induced taste disorder and the underlying mechanism in mice. Among the five basic tastes, the sour taste sensitivity of mice was significantly increased by bortezomib administration. In bortezomib-administered mice, protein expression of PKD2L1 was increased. The increased sour taste sensitivity induced by bortezomib returned to the co

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5% of the general population is affected by functional anosmia. An additional 15% exhibit decreased olfactory function. Many of these individuals ask ENT-doctors or neurologists for help. A cornerstone of the counselling process is the assessment of olfactory function. The aim of this work is to give a differentiated overview about the administration of commonly used psychophysical tests for olfactory and gustatory function including their normative data.
CONCLUSION: The use of standardized, reliable and validated tools is mandatory to provide patients with state-of

Knowledge of human central taste pathways is largely based on textbook (anatomical dissections) and animal (electrophysiology in vivo) data. It is only recently that further functional insight into human central gustatory pathways has been achieved. Magnetic resonance imaging studies, especially selective imaging of vascular, tumoral, or inflammatory lesions in humans has made this possible. However, some questions remain, particularly regarding the exact crossing site of human gustatory afferences. We present a patient with a pontine stroke after a vertebral artery thrombosis. The patient had

OBJECTIVE: The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 pandemic is one of the largest of the recent times and can cause many symptoms including smell and taste disorders. In the literature, smell disorders caused by coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) have been reported within a wide range from 3.2% to 98.3%. A small number of these studies demonstrated smell and taste disorders through objective tests. Our aim in this study was to determine the prevalence of smell and taste disorders in hospitalized patients due to COVID-19 infection.
METHODS: The study was carried out with 100 patie

Of the 3583 outpatients treated at our taste disorder clinic over a period of 15 years, 11 (0.31%) complained of taste disorder after tonsillectomy. The cause of taste disorder was identified in 8 of the 11 cases: in 3 cases it was caused by direct or indirect damage to the lingual branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve; in 2 cases it was attributable to medication taken by the patient after tonsillectomy; and in 3 cases taste disturbance was caused by a lack of dietary zinc, even though this was identified at the time of tonsillectomy. These findings indicate the importance of (i) informing pat

Loss or alteration of taste is a rare phenomenon that may be idiopathic or may be caused by head trauma, medication use or systemic and local factors including various invasive dental procedures resulting in nerve damage. We present an unusual case of generalized taste change following an oral surgical procedure. The case is presented to enhance understanding of taste disorders and their relation to a localized traumatic event. Causative factors and management strategies are also reviewed. Taste change, encompassing loss (ageusia) or alteration (dysgeusia) of taste, is a rare phenomenon that m

While our understanding of the molecular and cellular aspects of taste reception and signaling continues to improve, the aberrations in these processes that lead to taste dysfunction remain largely unexplored. Abnormalities in taste can develop in a variety of diseases, including infections and autoimmune disorders. In this study, we used a mouse model of autoimmune disease to investigate the underlying mechanisms of taste disorders. MRL/MpJ-Fas(lpr)/J (MRL/lpr) mice develop a systemic autoimmunity with phenotypic similarities to human systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren's syndrome. Our r

SARS-CoV-2 infects host cells mainly through the interaction between the virus's Spike protein and the viral receptors namely Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2). Both are highly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, in the nasal and bronchial epithelium, as well as in the type II alveolar epithelial cells. The aim of this review is to report the evidences from the scientific literature on the pathophysiology and the available treatments for olfactory-gustatory disorders in patients with COVID-19. The mechanisms involved in these disorders ar

There is a close relationship between perception of umami, which has become recognized as the fifth taste, and the human physical condition. We have developed a clinical test for umami taste sensitivity using a filter paper disc with a range of six monosodium glutamate (MSG) concentrations. We recruited 28 patients with taste disorders (45-78 years) and 184 controls with no taste disorders (102 young [18-25 years] and 82 older [65-89 years] participants). Filter paper discs (5 mm dia.) were soaked in aqueous MSG solutions (1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 200 mM), then placed on three oral sites innervat

There are some patients, though few in number, who complain of taste disturbance after tonsillectomy. Actual measurement of the distance between the lingual branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve, which controls taste in the posterior portion of the tongue, and the lower pole of the palatine tonsil, using a cadaver, showed the distance to be only 2-4 mm, thereby suggesting the danger of direct or indirect disturbance of this nerve by tonsillectomy. Among the 3,583 outpatients complaining of taste disturbance whom we have treated at our taste disorder clinic in the last 15 years, 11 (0.31%) were

Neurotrophic support of developing neurons by neurotrophins is of critical importance in the development of fungiform papillae and taste buds. A number of neurological disorders show a decrease or increase in fungiform papillae or taste sensation. These can be grouped into disorders with reduced papillae (Machado-Joseph disease, Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome, familial dysautonomia, dystonia musculorum, and Behçet's disease) and those with taste defects only (Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, and diabetes mellitus). Alterations in the ability to smell or taste are of considerable consequence, impacting quality of life, safety, nutrition, and dietary activities. These primary senses are influenced by a wide range of systemic diseases and disorders that commonly involve the entire body. These include viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal, cestode, and nematode infections that can spread throughout the gastric, lymphatic, neural, or circulatory systems as well as classic autoimmune disorders, collagen diseases, diabetes, and hypertension, and others. Although a considerable literature has evolved in which the

Hypogeusia is an uncommon complication of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and few reports in the literature have documented it. Excision of part of the soft palate and damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve or its lingual branch as a result of diathermy or surgery are the possible causes. The case of a 45-year-old male who suffered hypogeusia following UPPP is reported herein. He reported no improvement over a 6-month period. Quantitative assessment of his taste threshold for the 4 basic tastes using taste strips showed a score of 7/18, indicating hypogeusia. The possibility of taste disorder a
