Comparison of the major flavonoid content of S. baicalensis, S. lateriflora, and their commercial products.

According to the notification for definition of pharmaceuticals from the Director-General of the Pharmaceutical and Food Safety Bureau, Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare of Japan, the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap) and S. lateriflora (skullcap) are classified as "the raw materials exclusively used as pharmaceuticals", but their aerial parts are classified as "non-pharmaceuticals" so, in principle, there are no health claims for these materials and no descriptions of drug-like dosages or administration directions. Dried root of S. baicalensis is also registered in Japan

Theacrine, a Potent Antidepressant Purine Alkaloid from a Special Chinese Tea, Promotes Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Stressed Mice.

Daily intake of tea has been known to relate to a low risk of depression. In this study, we report that a special variety of tea in China, Camellia assamica var. kucha (kucha), possesses antidepressant effects but with less adverse effects as compared to traditional tea Camellia sinensis. This action of kucha is related to its high amount of theacrine, a purine alkaloid structurally similar to caffeine. We investigated the antidepressant-like effects and mechanisms of theacrine in chronic water immersion restraint stress and chronic unpredictable mild stress mice models. PC12 cells and primary

In vitro activity of kombucha tea ethyl acetate fraction against Malassezia species isolated from seborrhoeic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic and recurrent superficial dermatitis in which Malassezia species play an important role. There are different Malassezia species, which have been recently reported to be resistant to common antifungals. Natural sources can be useful alternatives to reduce the emergence of this resistance. Kombucha tea is believed to have potential antimicrobial properties. Regarding this, the present study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of Kombucha tea ethyl acetate fraction (KEAF) against Malassezia species obtained from the patients with

From plant disease to protective agent: tea blister blight aqueous extract restore copper-induced oxidative and inflammatory damage in zebrafish model.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress and inflammation play key pathological mechanisms involved in the development of chronic diseases. Although tea blister blight reduces commercial tea quality, pathogen-induced stress may enhance the accumulation of bioactive phenolics and flavonoids, making infected leaves a potential resource for the food-medicine homology framework. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of a tea blister blight aqueous extract (TBB) against copper sulfate (CuSO4)-induced oxidative and inflammatory stress in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. METHODS: Zebrafish embryos

The role of dietary supplements in inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic immune disorders of unclear aetiology. Dietary deficiencies may be a potential pathogenic factor in their development. Patients often take food supplements without knowledge of any evidence base. We have therefore assessed the evidence for food supplementation in the management of IBD. A PubMed search was performed for the terms Inflammatory bowel disease; nutritional deficiencies; dietary supplements; curcumin; green tea; vitamin D/other vitamins; folic acid; iron; zinc; probiotics; andrographis paniculata; and boswellia serrate. PubMed was used t

A Review of The Efficacy of Complementary and Alternative Medicines in Managing Dermatologic Infectious Diseases.

Dermatologic infections, particularly fungal and viral, are globally prevalent and often lead patients to seek complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). This review critically evaluates 17 studies investigating CAM efficacy in treating dermatologic infectious diseases, focusing on those evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Tea tree oil shows modest benefit for fungal infections such as tinea pedis and onychomycosis, though studies are limited by poor blinding and dropout rates. For herpes simplex virus (HSV), propolis and Melissa officinalis demonstrate potential antiviral e

Sustainable Use of Greek Herbs By-Products, as an Alternative Source of Biologically Active Ingredients for Innovative Products.

The processing of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) results in the production of a significant amount of plant by-products; herbal material of inferior quality and/or unusable plant parts that are not commercially exploitable. An extensive study of Greek native species was performed toward the production of innovative bioactive products using as raw materials the by-products obtained from the processing of cultivated MAPs. Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum (oregano), Sideritis scardica (Greek mountain tea), Thymus vulgaris (thyme), and Matricaria recutita (chamomile) were selected due to their

Protective effects of Hawk Tea aqueous extract against copper sulfate-induced oxidative damage in zebrafish model.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Litsea coreana Levl. var. lanuginosa (Hawk Tea), a traditional herbal beverage widely consumed in southwestern China, is valued in folk medicine for promoting health, protecting the liver, regulating blood lipids, and preventing metabolic disorders. Rich in flavonoids and other bioactive metabolites, Hawk Tea exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and antimicrobial properties. However, its protective mechanisms against oxidative stress and inflammation-key mediators of chronic and degenerative diseases-remain insufficiently defined. AIM OF T

Parenteral poppy seed tea packs a powerful punch.

Poppy seed tea (PST) has a long history of use for its medicinal (analgesic, anti-diarrhoeal, anxiolytic) effects. It is also commonly used as a recreational drug in its oral form throughout the world, but reports of intravenous use are very rare. We present two cases of intravenously injected PST with dramatic effects in order to create awareness among health professionals of this method of drug use and its potential complications, as well as to help clinicians dealing with opiate-dependent patients to warn them of the risk.

Artemisia annua as a self-reliant treatment for malaria in developing countries.

Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by the protozoan Plasmodium parasites. Each year, it causes disease in approximately 515 million people and kills between one and three million people, the majority of whom are young children in sub-Saharan Africa. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Due to climate change and the gradual warming of the temperate regions the future distribution of the malaria disease might include regions which are today seen as safe. Currently, malaria control requires an integrated approach

Melissa officinalis tea favourably affects the frequency of premature ventricular beats and cardiometabolic profile among patients with premature ventricular contraction: A randomised open-label controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) as one of the most common arrhythmias could worsen the morbidity of cardiovascular events, particularly concurrent with other risk factors. Considering the probable side effects of antiarrhythmic drugs chronic use, prescribing herbal medicines for such conditions is on the rise. Melissa officinalis (MO) is widely identified as an antiarrhythmic and cardioprotective agent but there is limited evidence for its clinical use. This research, thus, aimed to investigate the effects of MO tea among patients with PVCs. METHODS: The present 1

Ameliorating Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Acustimulation at Neiguan (PC6) and Zusanli (ST36) Acupoints Combined with Adaptive Biofeedback Training on Functional Outlet Obstruction Constipation.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant laxatives are still considered the most common treatment for functional outlet obstruction constipation (FOOC). However, the effectiveness of laxatives is unsatisfactory, and the long-term use of laxatives may cause certain adverse events. With this in mind, it is, however, paramount that novel complementary treatment(s) and/or other forms of alternative medicine are adequately investigated. AIMS: The study aims to explore the effects and potential mechanism(s) of transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEA) combined with adaptive biofeedback training (ABT) on FOOC. M

Terpenoids From Leaves of Diospyros kaki and Their Neuroprotective Effects.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality, highlighting the need for safe and effective treatments. Diospyros kaki leaves are a key ingredient in the clinical drug NaoXinQing and the health beverage persimmon leaf tea, yet their active components remain poorly defined. In this study, 16 compounds, including two new terpenoids (1, 3) and 14 known monoterpenoids (2, 4-16), were isolated from D. kaki leaves using an MS/MS molecular networking approach. Their structures were elucidated via NMR, quantum chemical NMR, and ECD calculations. Neuroprotective screening in O

Long-Term Cognitive Effects of Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa Korth.) Use.

Kratom or Mitragyna speciosa (Korth.) is a medicinal plant of Southeast Asia. As a result of its opioid-like effects, it remains unknown whether consumption of kratom tea is associated with impaired cognitive function. We assessed the cognitive function of 70 regular kratom users and 25 control participants using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. Participants performed six neuropsychological tasks that assessed motor, learning and memory, attention and executive function. Relative to control participants, higher consumption (>3 glasses daily or mitragynine doses between

Regulating practice at the margins: Türkiye's sequential policy response to unlicensed traditional, complementary, and independent health service provision, 2025-26.

Türkiye's foundational health-professions law (1928) concentrates clinical authority in licensed physicians. A 2014 regulation moved traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) from prosecutable practice into lawful, certified-physician-only provision, centralizing supply. Demand-reported by 14.7%-60.5% of patients nationally-has outgrown this framework. Physicians hold exclusive T&CM authority yet face structural disincentives to exercise it: the public performance-payment system values a 30-minute T&CM session the same as a 2-minute prescription renewal. Unmet demand migrated to unlicensed
