The concept of temperament in psychoactive substance use among college students.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse is among the leading causes of preventable diseases and premature death but reasons and conditions leading to substance abuse are complex and multifaceted. Different models of abuse and dependence assume an underlying emotional vulnerability. Individual behavioral and emotional reactivity patterns of personality are considered in the concept of temperament but studies linking different types of temperament with substance use are rare. METHODS: In this study we investigated 1380 inhabitants (59.7% females; 40.3% males) of residential student homes in Austria, using

Neural circuits, neurotransmitters, and behavior: serotonin and temperament in bulimic syndromes.

In bulimia nervosa (BN), and in related binge-purge syndromes, factors affecting central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) function appear to contribute not only to appetitive dysregulation but also to temperamental and personality manifestations. Drawing upon findings from neurobiological, molecular-genetic, and brain-imaging studies, we present an integrative model of the role of 5-HT function in bulimic syndromes. At the core of our model is a consideration of the ways in which diverse hereditary and environmental influences impact the action of the 5-HT system. We believe that our mode

Toddlers' temperament profiles: stability and relations to negative and positive parenting.

This study investigated the type and stability of temperament profiles in toddlers, and relations of profile probability to negative and positive parenting trajectories. Mothers (N = 96) rated their child's (41 girls and 54 boys) Sociability, Anger Proneness, and Activity Level four times during 1 year. The assessment of parenting included both maternal self-reports and observational measures. Latent profile analysis indicated three child temperament profiles: a well-adjusted 'typical' profile, an 'expressive' profile with heightened externalizing problems, and a 'fearful' profile with heighte

In search of Aristotle: temperament, human nature, melancholia, creativity and eminence.

Is suffering associated with melancholia and "madness" necessary for artistic creativity and eminence? Or do creativity and leadership have something to do with the temperaments associated with affective disease? We integrate concepts dating back to Greek psychological medicine and philosophy--especially work attributed to Aristotle--with modern data-based examination of the role of cyclothymic and related temperaments in the interface between mixity, the bipolar spectrum and normality. We place our query within the general framework of evolutionary biology and human nature. In doing so, we pr

The relationship between temperament and impulsive behaviors in eating disordered subjects.

To date, few studies have examined the personality characteristics and clinical predictors of impulsive behaviors in eating disorders (ED). The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of a wide range of impulsive behaviors in a sample of 554 ED subjects and to examine the predictors of these behaviors. Subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria as having anorexia nervosa restricting type (ANR; n = 183), anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (ANBP; n = 65), bulimia nervosa purging type (BNP; n = 244), and bulimia nervosa nonpurging type (BNNP; n = 62). Temperament and school-aged children's coping abilities and responses to stress.

To measure children's temperament and coping abilities, we administered the Stress Impact Scale to sixty 9- to 12-year-old children. Trained observers also completed an observational rating scale of coping behavior, the Coping Inventory, for each of the participants. The Stress Response Scale and Middle Childhood Temperament Questionnaire were completed by the mothers of the participants. Results showed that activity level was most predictive of effective coping as observed in the school environment. Dimensions of temperament that were most closely associated with less difficult responses to s

Genetic relationships between temperament traits of sows during pregnancy and lactation.

Group-housed gestating sows face challenging situations, including contact with the stockpersons and aggressive interactions with their pen-mates. During lactation, husbandry procedures may trigger maternal defensive aggression in sows. This study explored the genetic determination of the response to humans and the number of skin lesions resulting from social aggression in gestating Swiss Landrace sows and to estimate their correlations with maternal defensive aggression and piglet survival. During two 12-week periods, gestating sows (parities one to eleven) at four nucleus farms of the breedi

Association between early natural disaster exposure and temperament among Indian preadolescents.

BACKGROUND: Early developmental stages are critical for shaping later life personality traits, such as, temperament. Exposure to natural disasters, as an independent source of prenatal maternal stress, can influence child behavioural outcomes. The pioneering and the other studies on prenatal maternal stress from disasters were conducted in Western societies. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the association of exposure to a severe ND, during prenatal and early postnatal stage, with temperament in preadolescent Indian children. METHOD: We assessed temperament using the EAS Temperament

Prenatal Gut Microbiota Predicts Temperament in Offspring at 1-2 Years.

The purpose of this study was to explore whether prenatal gut microbiota (GM) and its functions predict the development of offspring temperament. A total of 53 mothers with a 1-year-old child and 41 mothers with a 2-year-old child were included in this study using a mother-infant cohort from central China. Maternal fecal samples collected during the third trimester were analyzed using 16S rRNA V3-V4 gene sequences. Temperament of the child was measured by self-reported data according to the primary caregiver. The effects of GM in mothers on offspring's temperament were evaluated using multiple

Prenatal and Intrapartum Factors Associated With Infant Temperament: A Systematic Review.

Background: Temperament involves individual variations in behavioural tendencies of emotional responses and reactions to stimuli after birth. Because 'foetal programming' is a strong hypothesis in developing temperament, prenatal and intrapartum factors may be significant determinants of infant temperament. This systematic literature review aims to elucidate the evidence of prenatal and intrapartum predictors, including genetic, biological, environmental, socio-demographic, psychological, and obstetric factors of parents and their child. Methods: Relevant articles were searched using MEDLINE,

Prenatal phthalate exposures and child temperament at 12 and 24 months.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational phthalate exposures have been adversely associated with attention, externalizing, and internalizing behaviors in childhood. Early childhood temperament may be a marker of later behavioral patterns. We therefore sought to determine whether gestational phthalate exposures were associated with infant and toddler temperament. METHODS: The Mount Sinai Children's Environmental Health Study is a prospective cohort study of children born between May 1998 and July 2001 in New York City (N=404). Phthalate metabolites were measured in spot urine samples collected from pregnant

Rumination Mediates the Relationship between Infant Temperament and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms.

This study examined prospective associations between negative emotionality, rumination, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of 301 youths (158 females) followed longitudinally from birth to adolescence. Mothers reported on youths' negative emotionality (NE) at age 1, and youths self-reported rumination at age 13 and depressive symptoms at ages 13 and 15. Linear regression analyses indicated that greater NE in infancy was associated with more depressive symptoms at age 15, even after controlling for child gender and depressive symptoms at age 13. Moreover, analyses indicated that rumi
