Estuarine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities that deplete or replace natural habitats. This may lead to cascading effects in estuarine food webs as the availability of primary producers changes. Rays are ecosystem engineers that feed in sedimentary environments, yet their main prey items and the primary producers supporting their nutrition are unknown. The aim of this study was to assess resource use of two ray species in Wallis Lake, New South Wales, Australia, the estuary stingray (Hemitrygon fluviorum) and the common stingaree (Trygonoptera testacea). Using s

Despite its relevance for plant nutrient acquisition, the role of the hyphosphere in structuring fungal-bacterial networks and mediating carbon-nitrogen (C-N) exchange under field conditions remains unclear. We therefore examined reciprocal C-N fluxes along the plant-fungi-bacteria continuum and their link to microbial community assembly across grassland soil microhabitats. Sterilized compartmentalized ingrowth cores were exposed to soil in the field for 3 months. Plants were pulse-labeled with 13CO2 and 13C was traced into microbial biomarkers over 7 d. 15N-labeled urea was supplied to a hyph

Biofilm growth and phage exposure are common to diverse bacterial species. Studying phage-host interaction and population dynamics in biofilms with cellular resolution remains a significant challenge, especially when attempting to recapitulate the natural environments that microbes occupy. Here, we study the population dynamics of phage K139 lysogenized and nonlysogenized Vibrio cholerae when growing in biofilms on the surface of chitin particles in seawater, replicating key features of V. cholerae ecology in the marine environment. We find that lysogenized V. cholerae, via spontaneous lytic i

Yolkin is an egg yolk-derived protein with immunoregulatory properties. In this work, yolkin was evaluated as a protective agent in endotoxemic BALB/c mice. The mice were pretreated with yolkin either orally in drinking water or intraperitoneally (i.p.) before i.p. injection of E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Circulating blood leukocyte number, blood cell composition, serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and haptoglobin, as well as histological changes in the spleen and the liver, were examined. Yolkin differentially regulated the values of these paramet

Although willow produces large amounts of fuel that can be used to generate heat or electricity, its plantation affects the properties of its host soil. To assess these changes over time, we compared the properties of the top layers (0-10 cm) of willow plantation soils from three plot age groups (4-6, 7-10 and 11-14 years old) with the properties of the neighbouring arable soils. We focused on carbon (C) storage, the compounds in which C occurs, nutrients and enzyme activity. The calculated change index indicated an increase in the C and available potassium, magnesium and phosphorus contents a

We developed a simple assay to quantify natural variation in adult thermal stress tolerance in the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae . Selfing hermaphrodites from wild strains were exposed to cold (0°C, 5°C) or heat (29°C, 33°C, 35°C) for 15 hours during early adulthood. Cold exposure revealed clear clade-level differences: temperate strains showed high survival, while tropical strains were more variable and generally less tolerant. Heat exposure at 35°C caused high mortality across strains from both clades, with only slightly lower mortality in tropical strains. At 29°C, all strains showed ful

This study explores the effect of different wind events (direction and duration) on the surf zone zooplankton community in a temperate sandy beach. Samplings were realized on the surf zone of Pehuen Co sandy beach during 17 wind events from May 17th, 2017, to July 19th, 2019. Biological samples were taken before and after the events. The identification of the events was realized using recorded high-frequency wind speed data. General Linear Model (LM) and Generalized linear models (GLM) were employed to compare physical and biological variables. We observed that the wind direction unequally alt

INTRODUCTION: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are emitted by all organisms as intermediate or end-products of metabolic processes. Individual BVOCs perform important physiological, ecological and climatic functions, and collectively constitute the volatilome-which can be reflective of organism taxonomy and health. Although BVOC emissions of tropical benthic reef taxa have recently been the focus of multiple studies, emissions derived from their temperate counterparts have never been characterised.
OBJECTIVES: Characterise the volatilomes of key competitors for benthic space among

West Nile virus (WNV) is a member of the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex, which was first described in 1937 as neurotropic virus in Uganda in 1937. Subsequently, WNV was identified in the rest of the old-world and from 1999 in North America. Birds are the primary hosts, and WNV is maintained in a bird-mosquito-bird cycle, with pigs as amplifying hosts and humans and horses as incidental hosts. WNV transmission is warranted by mosquitoes, usually of the Culex spp., with a tendency to spill over when mosquitoes' populations build up. Other types of transmissions have been described in endemic

Citations and validation of work play a crucial and integral role in a researcher's career. Ranking systems of scientists, on the other hand, potentially scratch and expose the fallible egoistic human face of science, leading to an unhealthy milieu of competition rather than the uplifting one of motivation. We have attempted to highlight and bring to fore these factors in our brief viewpoint. We critically analyze the reasons why ranking systems of scientists, especially in the field of medicine, will shift the focus from advancement of science to advancement of "self."

The most common CHD in the adult patient population is an atrial septal defect due to its asymptomatic nature in early life. However, when diagnosis and treatment are delayed, pulmonary arterial hypertension may develop as a long-term complication, sometimes before adulthood. The presence of PAH adversely affects the results of surgical treatment and may even eliminate the feasibility of surgery in some patients. In such patients who have high pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance at the margin of inoperability, the response to the acute vasoreactivity test determines the

The subgenus Culex L. includes species involved in summer-autumn arbovirus transmission but studies during winter are scarce in temperate Argentina. Female specimens were collected host-seeking at dry-ice-baited traps during autumn-winter-spring at two sites in Córdoba City during 2016 and 2017. The specimens were morphologically identified and dissected to determine the follicular developmental stage (gonotrophic activity). Females with advanced follicular stages (≥III) were subjected to molecular procedures to confirm or re-identify previous morphological identification. Five species (Culex

BACKGROUND: The global spread of Aedes albopictus has exposed new geographical areas to the risk of dengue and chikungunya virus transmission. Several autochthonous transmission events have occurred in recent decades in Southern Europe and many indicators suggest that it will become more frequent in this region in the future. Environmental, socioeconomic and climatic factors are generally considered to trigger the emergence of these viruses. Accordingly, a greater knowledge of the determinants of this emergence in a European context is necessary to develop adapted surveillance and control stra

Projected changes in temperature and drought regime are likely to reduce carbon (C) storage in forests, thereby amplifying rates of climate change. While such reductions are often presumed to be greatest in semi-arid forests that experience widespread tree mortality, the consequences of drought may also be important in temperate mesic forests of Eastern North America (ENA) if tree growth is significantly curtailed by drought. Investigations of the environmental conditions that determine drought sensitivity are critically needed to accurately predict ecosystem feedbacks to climate change. We ma

Severe temper outbursts (STO) in children are associated with impaired school and family functioning and may contribute to negative outcomes. These outbursts can be conceptualized as excessive frustration responses reflecting reduced emotion regulation capacity. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been implicated in negative affect as well as emotional control, and exhibits disrupted function in children with elevated irritability and outbursts. This study examined the intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) of a region of the ACC, the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC), in 5- to 9-year-o

A bacteriophage infecting pathogenic Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was isolated from a swine farm experiencing an outbreak of acute swine erysipelas; we designated this phage SE-I. SE-I has an icosahedral head, a long tail and a double-stranded DNA genome. The 34,997-bp genome has a GC content of 34 % and contains 43 open reading frames (ORFs) encoding packaging, structural, lysin-holin, and hypothetical proteins. Components of purified SE-I were separated using SDS-PAGE and analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Nine proteins were identified, encoded by ORF9, ORF15, ORF23, ORF

Understanding the impacts of weather fluctuations, and environmental gradients, on the abundance of vectors is fundamental to grasp the dynamic nature of the entomological risk for disease transmission. The mosquito Armigeres subalbatus (Coquillet) is a common vector of filariasis. Nevertheless, its population dynamics have been relatively poorly studied. Here, we present results from a season long study where we studied spatio-temporal abundance patterns of Ar. subalbatus across the altitudinal gradient of Mt. Konpira in Nagasaki, Japan. Spatially, we found that abundance of adult Ar. subalba

This study reports a case of a 56-year-old white male, retired coal-miner, diagnosed with chromoblastomycosis lasting 20 years. The infection site was the burnt skin of the back. For many years the patient had not undertaken any treatment believing that the lesion had been a burn scar. A gradual increase in lesion size prompted the patient to start therapy. The diagnosis was made by histopathological examination and mycological culture. Identification of the causative agent at the species level was achieved by sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and D1/D2 domains

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Since Aedes aegypti was identified as vector of yellow fever and dengue, its dispersal is relevant for disease control. We studied the dispersal of Ae. aegypti in temperate areas of Argentina during egglaying, using the existing population and egg traps.
METHODS: Two independent replicas of a unique experimental design involving mosquitoes dispersing from an urbanized area to adjacent non-urbanized locations were carried out and analyzed in statistical terms.
RESULTS: We found relationship between stochastic variables related to the egg-laying mosquito activity (ELMA

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of human and animal infections. Bacteriophage are a class of mobile genetic element (MGE) that carry virulence genes and disseminate them horizontally, including Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), the immune evasion cluster (IEC) associated with human specificity, and enterotoxin A the major toxin associated with food poisoning. S. aureus isolates group into major clonal complex (CC) lineages that largely evolve independently due to possession of different restriction-modification (RM) systems.
