Multiple Spontaneous Arteriovenous Fistulas of the Superficial Temporal Artery.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple spontaneous arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) of the external carotid artery (ECA) are rare. We present a case of multiple spontaneous AVFs treated by coil embolization using a combination of the transarterial and transvenous approach. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman complained of right pulsatile tinnitus and a mass lesion at the ventral region of the right ear. 3D CTA and cerebral angiography revealed two AVFs on the superficial temporal artery (STA) with an aneurysm 9.8 mm in diameter. A balloon guiding catheter was navigated to the right STA via the right femoral art

Intraorbital Arteriovenous Fistula From the Superficial Temporal Artery.

Intraorbital arteriovenous fistula is a rare vascular disease characterized by an acquired arteriovenous communication without direct cavernous sinus involvement. Intraorbital arteriovenous fistula may develop slowly and present similarly to other insidious orbitopathies, such as carotid-cavernous fistula. The authors present a case of a superficial temporal artery to superior ophthalmic vein fistula arising in the absence of trauma or prior surgery. This is the first report of a spontaneous intraorbital arteriovenous fistula arising between these vessels and further describes the rare occurre

Anatomy of the superficial temporal artery in patients with unilateral microtia.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study evaluated the anatomical distribution of the superficial temporal artery (STA) in supply of the temporoparietal fascial (TPF) flap for use in patients with unilateral microtia undergoing reconstruction. We aimed to determine whether embryologic arrest of pharyngeal arch development would lead to aberrant STA, which impedes reliable harvest of the TPF flap in patients requiring microtia repair. METHODS: CT angiograms (CTAs) and 3D reconstruction of the face and neck of 41 patients with microtia, aged 6-21 years, were examined. The number of STA branches, br

Atypical Growing Pattern of Superficial Temporal Artery Pseudoaneurysm.

Superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm is rare and usually caused by trauma. Pseudoaneurysms have been reported to occur most frequently from 2 to 6 weeks after trauma and they range from 1 to 3 cm in diameter. The authors present a case of a patient with an atypical delayed rapid growing pseudoaneurysm, who had undergone neurosurgery after head trauma 20 years ago.A 72-year-old woman underwent craniotomy and extradural hemorrhage removal through a left temporoparietal incision caused by head trauma after a traffic accident 20 years prior. The mass of less than 1 cm in diameter was inciden

Endovascular Treatment of Traumatic Pseudoaneurysm of the Superficial Temporal Artery.

Pseudoaneurysms of the superficial temporal artery (STA) are rare vascular lesions that mainly occur after blunt head trauma. Diagnosis can be made on clinical grounds and is confirmed by ultrasonography. They are usually treated by open surgery procedures, but when the aneurysm is located in inaccessible areas, catheter embolization can be an alternative therapeutic option. We describe a case of a traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the STA which was treated with the vascular plug embolization. We conclude that endovascular embolization can be an option in the treatment of STA pseudoaneurysms.

An aberrant carotid artery in the temporal bone with fatal complication.

We report the case of an 84-year-old female presenting with an aberrant ICA with cerebral air embolization caused by Eustachian tube air inflation (ETAI). High pressure of air inflation developed because of an aberrant ICA blocking the tympanic orifice of the Eustachian tube, with release of the high-pressure air into the aberrant ICA. It must be kept in mind that complications may occur not only during transtympanic treatment, but also in any treatment, such as ETAI, in aberrant ICA cases.

[Bilateral loss of vision in temporal arteriitis--a preventable condition?].

BACKGROUND: Bilateral loss of vision (BLV) is one of the most feared complications of temporal arteriitis (TA). AIM: Analysis of factors contributing to BLV. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Observational study in 301 TA patients in- cluding 23 (8%) suffering from BLV. RESULTS: Diagnosis of TA was unknown in all patients before BLV. Total blindness of both eyes occurred in 10 and in one eye in 5 patients. BLV evolved simultaneously in 7, sequentially in 12, and time latency remained undetermined in 4 patients. Loss of vision occurred during hospital treatment in 5 patients. Progressive loss of vision

Temporal artery bruits in a patient with giant cell arteritis.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by granulomatous inflammation of medium and large arteries. A 69-year-old man presented with right jaw claudication, intermittent scalp tenderness without headache, and visibly swollen temporal arteries. Results of a right temporal artery biopsy were positive for GCA. Auscultation revealed audible bruits of the temporal arteries. We believe this is the first reported example of bruits of the temporal arteries as a manifestation of GCA. The condition resolved with corticosteroid therapy.

Temporal artery tap: usefulness and limitations in carotid sonography.

PURPOSE: To examine the effectiveness of percussion of the superficial temporal artery for identification of the external carotid artery (ECA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The temporal artery tap maneuver was performed on 324 carotid arteries (163 patients). Evidence for transmission of the effect of the temporal tap was sought in the pulsed Doppler ultrasound waveforms of the ECA, common carotid artery (CCA), and internal carotid artery (ICA). The location and severity of stenotic lesions were recorded. The relative amplitudes of the oscillations created by the tap were compared. RESULTS: The te

Temporal artery morphology and morphometry in giant cell arteritis.

Paraffin sections and more than 7,000 plastic cross-sections of temporal arteries from 27 patients with a clinical diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), 16 patients with a clinical diagnosis of temporal arteritis (TA) and 18 age- and sex-matched postmortem controls were studied using light microscopy. A new method was developed to permit a morphometric comparison between biopsies and autopsy specimens. Two stages of inflammation were discerned in TA. In atrophic arterial segments there was a focal, foreign-body, giant-cell reaction to the calcified internal elastic membrane (IEM) with a s

The ultimate diagnoses of patients undergoing temporal artery biopsies.

Patients with signs and symptoms of giant cell arteritis may have normal temporal artery biopsy specimens. To study the relationships between signs and symptoms of this disease and the ultimate clinical diagnosis, we reviewed 51 patients who had undergone temporal artery biopsy. The mean age of the patients with abnormal biopsy specimens was higher than that of patients with normal biopsy specimens. We found headache, fever, and jaw claudication were useful symptoms in predicting abnormal biopsy specimens. The ultimate diagnoses of patients with normal biopsy specimens and no response to treat

Superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery bypass for the treatment of complex middle cerebral artery aneurysms.

OBJECTIVES: Direct microsurgical clipping for complex middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms may require a long ischemic time. Sacrifice of the parent artery with trapping or endovascular coiling also may lead to ischemic stroke. We described our institutional experience with the treatment of complex MCA aneurysms using extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) (superficial temporal artery [STA]-MCA) bypass. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who had treatment of IC aneurysms with the assistance of STA-MCA bypass from July 2002 to December 2016. Six patients with complex MCA

Anastomosis of occipital artery to anterior inferior cerebellar artery with interposition of superficial temporal artery. Case report.

A 56-year-old man with vertebrobasilar insufficiency and associated findings including quadriparesis, dysarthria, cerebellar ataxia, nystagmus, and somnolence underwent left occipital artery (OA) to anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) anastomosis with interposition of a superficial temporal artery (STA) graft. This procedure was chosen because cerebral angiograms demonstrated occlusion of the right vertebral artery (V3) and severe stenosis of the V4 segment of the left vertebral artery, with perfusion of the territory of the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery via the ipsilateral

Superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery bypass for ischemic atherosclerotic middle cerebral artery disease.

Most recent studies on the effectiveness of cerebral revascularization have focused on the treatment of atherosclerotic internal carotid artery occlusive disease. The goal of the present study was to assess neurological function in 11 severe atherosclerotic middle cerebral artery (MCA) disease patients with transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) and hemodynamic compromise and determine the efficacy of superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass. There were eight patients with MCA occlusion and three with severe MCA stenosis. After the bypass procedure, all 11 patients experi
