BACKGROUND: Although peroneal tendon injuries are a common cause of lateral ankle pain, there is a paucity of literature specifically addressing the treatment of severe concomitant peroneus longus and brevis tears. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient outcomes following a single-stage flexor tendon transfer for the treatment of severe concomitant tears of both peroneal tendons.
METHODS: Eight patients were treated with a single-stage flexor tendon transfer for severe concomitant peroneus longus and brevis tears over a 15-year period. Mean age at the time of surgery was 54 years (

Flat foot due to rupture of the tibialis posterior tendon has not previously been described in children. We present three young patients who developed unilateral pes planus after old undiagnosed lacerations of the tendon. Transfer of the flexor hallucis longus to the distal stump of the tibialis posterior tendon achieved good results in all three cases.

CASE: A 30-month-old boy with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita presented with severe, recurrent teratological clubfoot refractory to serial casting, Achilles tenotomy, and plantar fascia release. Because of repeated cast slippage and patient distress, comprehensive posterior, plantar, and medial releases were performed, with cast exchange 2 weeks thereafter. A robust, taut tibialis anterior prompted addition of tibialis anterior tendon transfer to the lateral cuneiform. Postoperatively, plantigrade alignment was achieved both clinically and radiographically and maintained at the 2-year follo

It is essential to master the techniques of tendon transfer and to know the indications, so as to be able to treat tendinopathy, tendon tear or static deformity in the foot and ankle. The type of transfer depends on the pathology, with the aim of reconstructing or supplementing the affected muscle. Complete clinical and paraclinical assessment is needed to determine feasibility and draw up the preoperative plan according to axial deformity and associated retraction. Success depends on several factors: rigorous technique, fixation method, tension adjustment, immobilization, and rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Tibialis anterior tendon transfer in relapsing clubfoot deformity is a well-known treatment option for dynamic forefoot supination and adduction deformities. The tibialis anterior tendon can be anchored to the lateral cuneiform or the cuboid. A complication of this surgery is overcorrection to a flatfoot deformity or undercorrection that maintains the clubfoot deformity. We compared reoperation rates and clinical outcomes between these 2 groups.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study performed from 2005 to 2020. The primary outcome was repeat operation. The secondary outcome inclu

BACKGROUND: Quadriceps tendon rupture (QTR) is an uncommon injury. In chronic QTR there may be a large defect and direct repair is not possible with sutures or transosseous anchors. There is no gold standard surgical procedure for the treatment of chronic QTR. We propose a novel technique in which the quadriceps tendon (QT) is reconstructed using a transfer of ipsilateral sartorius tendon.
METHODS: Between January 2002 and April 2020, 19 patients undergoing sartorius muscle transfer for chronic QTR were prospectively recruited. The Knee Society Score (KSS), range of motion (ROM), and Medical

Multiple manifestations have been associated with the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. Among them are mononeuritis multiplex (MNM) and other neurological complications, whose connection to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still unclear. One of the most common sites of nerve injury is the radial nerve, which can be treated with both nerve or tendon transfer. In this case report, a patient who was afflicted with severe COVID-19 infection and developed mono neuritis multiplex after prolonged mechanical ventilation with radial nerve palsy was treated

»: The common peroneal nerve (CPN) is one of the most frequently injured nerves of the lower extremity.
»: One-third of patients who develop CPN palsy proceed to chronic impairment without signs of recovery.
»: Ankle-foot orthoses can provide improvement with respect to gait dysfunction and are useful as a nonsurgical treatment option.
»: Severe cases of CPN palsy demonstrating no signs of recovery may require operative intervention with tendon transfer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with isolated loss of active external rotation (ILER) but preserved active forward elevation have recently been identified as a rare and distinct clinical entity. The modified L'Episcopo procedure attempts to restore horizontal muscle balance and restore active external rotation.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed for all patients with ILER and preserved forward elevation with Hamada stage ≤2 changes undergoing the modified L'Episcopo tendon transfer. Preoperative rotator cuff fatty infiltration and morphology was reported. Clinical, radiographic, and functional

The outcome of upper limb tendon transfer surgery is improved when the patient is able to voluntarily contract specific muscles during the surgical procedure. Tumescent local anesthesia is suitable, but we describe an alternative option that involves the novel management of an axillary block. A 47-year-old man, injured in a motor vehicle crash, exhibited a thumb extensor deficit because of severe muscular trauma to the forearm. He underwent a tendon transfer of the fourth superficial flexor tendon to the extensor pollicis longus under an axillary block. First, individual injections of ropivaca

BACKGROUND:: Operative management of chronic Achilles tendon ruptures is challenging, and numerous techniques have been described. Risk of infection and wound breakdown have been described after open techniques, and minimally invasive methods have been proposed to avoid them. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and radiological results obtained after endoscopic flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer in patients with chronic Achilles tendon rupture.
METHODS:: Between 2012 and 2015, a total of 22 patients were endoscopically treated for chronic Achilles tendon rupture. Mean

BACKGROUND: Birth brachial plexus injury usually affects the upper trunks of the brachial plexus and can cause substantial loss of active shoulder external rotation and abduction. Due to the unbalanced rotational forces acting at the glenohumeral joint, the natural history of the condition involves progressive glenohumeral joint dysplasia with associated upper limb dysfunction. Surgical reconstruction methods have been described previously by Sever and L'Episcopo, and modified by Hoffer and Roper to release the adduction contracture and to restore external rotation and shoulder abduction.

Temporalis muscle tendon unit (MTU) transfer may be used as a single-stage procedure for dynamic reanimation of the paralyzed face. Principles and biomechanics of muscle function and tendon transposition are essential in optimizing outcome. Critical steps and pearls for success include minimizing scarring, maintaining glide plains, mobilizing adequate tendon length, insertion of MTU at ideal tension based on intraoperative dynamic tension-excursion relationship, and insertion of tendon as close to the lip margin as possible. Because muscles adapt to tension, load, and task changes by altering
