Terrorism Catastrophizing and Sociodemographic Correlates Among Croatian Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Fear of terrorism can impact psychological functioning and behavior even without direct exposure. Little is known about how anticipatory terrorism fears manifest among nursing students in European contexts. This study assessed terrorism catastrophizing among Croatian nursing students and examined sociodemographic predictors. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted between October and December 2024 among 348 nursing students, using the validated Terrorism Catastrophizing Scale (TCS). Behavioral and habitual changes related to the terrorism threat were

Perpetrator Risk Markers for Intimate Terrorism and Situational Couple Violence: A Meta-Analysis.

Johnson developed a typology of intimate partner violence (IPV) which includes two different categories of violence: situational couple violence (SCV) and intimate terrorism (IT). Johnson proposed that IT is more likely to be found in clinical samples (e.g., batterer intervention programs or domestic violence shelters) compared to nonclinical (general population) samples. This meta-analysis (n = 149 studies; k = 216 effect sizes) examines differences in the strengths of IPV risk markers in clinical and nonclinical samples of male perpetrators and female victims. All variables (communication an

Growing up in the shadow of terrorism: youth in America after 9/11.

Research conducted in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks (9/11) suggests that, except for those who directly witnessed or suffered loss from the attacks, for most children the emotional impact was relatively transitory. We review this literature as well as consider other ways in which the attacks may have played a role in the development of adolescents and young adults as they came of age in the shadow of 9/11 in the United States. Specifically, we discuss the potential impact of the collective trauma of 9/11 on children's coping and emotional regulation, their sociopolitica

Hypothermia and the Global War on Terror: 18 Years of Minimal Progress.

INTRODUCTION: The association between hypothermia, coagulopathy, and acidosis in trauma is well described. Hypothermia mitigation starts in the prehospital setting; however, it is often a secondary focus after other life-saving interventions. The deployed environment further compounds the problem due to prolonged evacuation times in rotary wing aircraft, resource limitations, and competing priorities. This analysis evaluates hypothermia in combat casualties and the relationship to resuscitation strategy with blood products. METHODS: Using the data from the Department of Defense Joint Trauma R

Self-consciousness and death cognitions from a terror management perspective.

Two studies explored the connection between self-consciousness and death cognitions. In Study 1 (n = 56), a positive association was found between accessibility of death-related thoughts and the ruminative dimension of self-consciousness. In Study 2 (n = 212), a mortality salience induction led to higher validation of cultural worldviews (a more severe perception of social transgressions) than a control group, but only among individuals with lower self-consciousness, whereas participants characterized by higher self-consciousness did not make increased use of this cultural anxiety buffer. Ricin as a weapon of mass terror--separating fact from fiction.

In recent years there has been an increased concern regarding the potential use of chemical and biological weapons for mass urban terror. In particular, there are concerns that ricin could be employed as such an agent. This has been reinforced by recent high profile cases involving ricin, and its use during the cold war to assassinate a high profile communist dissident. Nevertheless, despite these events, does it deserve such a reputation? Ricin is clearly toxic, though its level of risk depends on the route of entry. By ingestion, the pathology of ricin is largely restricted to the gastrointe

A snapshot of terror: acute posttraumatic responses to the September 11 attack.

This paper reports on acute posttraumatic reactions and forms of coping to the September 11 attack. We conducted a survey within three weeks of the attack on a nationwide, representative sample of individuals 13 years or older (N = 3,134). Measures included the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ), the brief version of the COPE, and questions about demographics and attitudes toward the attackers. Results show that residents of New York City--women, young adults (but not teens), and people recently immigrated into the country--experienced more distress about the attack. There wa

Organization of a health-system pharmacy team to respond to episodes of terrorism.

The role of a pharmacy emergency response team (PERT) trained to respond to episodes of terrorism involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents is described. Pharmacists must be prepared to support their health systems in responding to episodes of terrorism by detecting exposure to CBRN agents and mitigating, treating, and preventing casualties resulting from exposure to those agents. Maimonides Medical Center, whose pharmacists responded to the medical and pharmaceutical needs of victims of the World Trade Center attacks and anthrax exposures, has developed the PERT,

Sleep terror disorder and insomnia treated with trazodone: a case report.

A 7-year-old girl who suffered from severe sleep terror disorder was unsuccessfully treated with imipramine, hydroxyzine, and thioridazine. Trazodone at night provided a remarkable relief of the symptoms of her sleep terror disorder. Trazodone might be another alternative in the treatment of this rare disorder.

Sleep disorders: insomnia, sleepwalking, night terrors, nightmares, and enuresis.

All five sleep disorders reviewed in this article can be adequately evaluated in the physician's office by taking a sleep history and conducting a careful general medical and psychiatric assessment. Insomnia, the commonest sleep disorder, is more prevalent among women and elderly and psychosocially disadvantaged persons. Personality factors such as a tendency toward the internalization of emotions and the occurrence of stressful life events also play a major role in the development of chronic insomnia. A multidimensional approach is indicated for the treatment of chronic insomnia; hypnotic dru

Adult Medical Countermeasures: Antidotes and Cytokines for Radiological and Nuclear Incidents and Terrorism.

The war in Ukraine raises concerns for potential hazards of radiological incidents and their impact on humans, especially families. Preparedness and response to radiological and nuclear incidents necessitates familiarity with pharmaceutical countermeasures, including antidotes and cytokines. Searches found no published study comparing adult indications and dosing among standard references. This study addresses this gap by collecting, tabulating, and disseminating information to health care professionals. Expert consensus chose the following references to compare adult indications and dosing of

Adapting risk assessments to a changing terrorism landscape: Revising the extremism risk guidance.

The Extremism Risk Guidance-Revised (ERG-R) updates and expands the ERG22+ framework, which has guided terrorism risk assessment in prison and probation across England and Wales since 2011. Developed by His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) Counter Terrorism-Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre (CT-ARC), the ERG-R responds to key shifts in the terrorism landscape, including the growth of online radicalization, greater involvement of younger individuals, an increase in extreme right-wing convictions, and more fluid ideological affiliations. The revised framework comprises 36 factor

A longitudinal study of psychological distress and exposure to trauma reminders after terrorism.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was threefold: (1) to examine the type and frequency of trauma reminders reported by survivors 2.5 years after a terrorist attack; (2) to examine whether frequency of exposure to trauma reminders is associated with psychological distress and level of functioning; and (3) to compare the worst trauma reminders reported by the same survivors at 2 different time points. METHOD: Participants were 261 survivors (52.1% male; Mage = 22.1 years, SD = 4.76) of the 2011 massacre on Utøya Island, Norway, who were interviewed face-to-face 14-15 and 30-32 months postterror.

Effect of exposure to terrorism on sleep-related experiences in Israeli young adults.

General sleep-related experiences (Watson, 2001), including special dream states such as elevated dream recall, nightmares, hypnagogic hallucinations, flying dreams, and waking dreams, have been shown to be associated with life stress and psychopathological distress (Soffer-Dudek & Shahar, 2009). In this study, we attempted to examine these associations within the context of terror-related stress. In the week following operation Oferet Yetzuka in Israel, ninety-one participants filled out questionnaires concerning sleep experiences, psychopathological distress, and degree of exposure to terror

Terrorism and weapons of mass destruction: managing the behavioral reaction in primary care.

Any terrorist attack using weapons of mass destruction will result in substantial psychological trauma and stress. Primary care and emergency clinics will likely see patients who have stress-related emotional or physical symptoms, or exacerbations of preexisting health concerns. Significant psychological and behavioral reactions to an attack with weapons of mass destruction are certain, include both group and individual reactions, and will follow a predictable course. Possible group reactions include mass panic, acute outbreaks of medically unexplained symptoms, and chronic cases of medically

Stalking: terrorism at our doors--how social workers can help victims fight back.

Stalking is a dangerous and devastating crime that irrevocably changes the lives of victims but is frequently misunderstood and minimized. Victims report that their lives are never the same after they have been stalked. Stalking is prevalent and gender-neutral and occurs across all socioeconomic lines and in all clinical settings. The prevalence of stalking provides many opportunities for social workers to intervene, but first they must recognize and understand the problem. This article explains common misconceptions about stalking, contains a brief discussion of the types of stalking, the ele

An Epidemiological Analysis of Terrorism-Related Attacks in Eastern Europe from 1970 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past five decades, Eastern Europe has seen relatively little in terms of terrorist attacks. The recent escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict has, however, placed a new spotlight on the region, and new questions and concerns around war, conflict, insurgency, and terrorism are being posed. The Russian invasion and extensive combat operations, the largest in Europe since World War II, are occurring across Ukraine where there are 15 active nuclear reactors, not including the Chernobyl site, that are vulnerable to attack or sabotage. In addition, Eastern Europe has been
