Anxiety related to genetic testing for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and cystic fibrosis in COPD and/or bronchiectasis patients.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the psychological reaction to information about diagnostic genetic testing for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (Alpha-1) and cystic fibrosis (CF) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or bronchiectasis patients who were tested but did not know the results. METHODS: One hundred and three adults took the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory before and after a standardized educational intervention and responded to a questionnaire. RESULTS: Information about the limitations, risks and benefits of Alpha-1 and CF testing did not raise mean anxiety levels. Mean anxiety was sli

Hippocampal and septal injections of nicotine and 8-OH-DPAT distinguish among different animal tests of anxiety.

1. Different animal tests model different anxiety disorders. Thus, the social interaction test is a model of generalised anxiety disorder, plus-maze Trial 1 models elements of panic disorder and Trial 2 in the elevated plus-maze is a model of specific phobia. 2. Studies of the neuroanatomical and neurochemical pathways controlling behaviour in these different tests provides information on the neurobiological mechanisms modulating anxiety disorders. 3. In the social interaction test, nicotine and 8-OH-DPAT had anxiogenic effects when injected into the dorsal hippocampus or the lateral septum. 4

Anxiolytic and anxiogenic drug effects on exploratory activity in an elevated plus-maze: a novel test of anxiety in the rat.

The current studies further investigated the effects, in animal models of anxiety, of novel putative anxiolytic and anxiogenic compounds believed to induce their effects by actions at the GABA-benzodiazepine receptor complex. It was expected that the results would also provide further validation for a novel test of anxiety based on the ratio of open to closed arm entries in an elevated plus maze in the rat. The novel putative anxiolytics CL 218,872 (10-20 mg/kg) and tracazolate (5 mg/kg) significantly elevated the percentage of time spent on the open arms of an elevated plus-maze, consistent w

Effect of evaluation timing and duration of anxiety-like behaviors induced by conditioned fear in rats: Assessment using the triple test.

The fear conditioning-based models of anxiety disorders have been widely used for assessing anxiolytic action. The triple test is an evaluation method for anxiety-like behaviors that integrates the open field, elevated plus maze, and light/dark box, which can comprehensively reflect the anxiety-like behaviors state of animals. However, there are many factors that can affect the evaluation results of anxiety-like behaviors, especially the time of day (morning or afternoon), which are often ignored by most experimental studies. Accordingly, in the present study, we first measured the anxiety-lik

The influence of various glutamate receptors antagonists on anxiety-like effect of ethanol withdrawal in a plus-maze test in rats.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether various glutamate receptor antagonists could affect ethanol withdrawal-induced anxiety-like behavior measured in the elevated plus-maze test in rats. In our study, memantine (8 and 12 mg/kg), a noncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, did not show any effect on ethanol withdrawal anxiety. Acamprosate (NMDA and metabotropic glutamate5 (mGlu5) receptor antagonist), at a dose of 400 mg/kg showed anxiolytic-like effect, thus increasing the percent of time spent in open arms and open arms entries. Antagonists of group I mG

Lamotrigine has an anxiolytic-like profile in the rat conditioned emotional response test of anxiety: a potential role for sodium channels?

RATIONALE: Many anticonvulsants are used in disorders other than epilepsy. For example, lamotrigine is reported to be effective in post-traumatic stress disorder and mania. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the effects of the anticonvulsants lamotrigine, valproate and carbamazepine in an animal model of anxiety. We assessed a wide range of pharmacological tools to delineate the mechanism of lamotrigine's anxiolytic effect. METHODS: We assessed these compounds in the rat conditioned emotional response (CER) test of anxiety. RESULTS: Lamotrigine (30-80 mg/kg) dose-dependently and reproducibly engendered

Anxiety and depression screening across diverse populations: Testing measurement and structural invariance of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 across Black and White groups.

The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 are two of the most commonly used measures of anxiety and depression in clinical practice and research. Although the measures are frequently used, little is known about their measurement invariance across diverse populations. Because both measures were originally developed and validated in largely White samples, it is necessary to ensure that the psychometric properties of the measures are similar across populations. In the present study, we use a national sample of college students from the Healthy Minds Study to ex

Anxiety modulates the relationship between right inferior parietal lobule structure and problematic smartphone use: a test of the I-PACE model.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has been increasingly recognized as a behavioral addiction associated with heightened anxiety. According to the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model, affective factors such as anxiety may interact with individual neurobiological characteristics to facilitate and maintain problematic behaviors. However, the neurostructural mechanisms underlying the relationship between anxiety and PSU remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: The Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale (SABAS) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (

Does the primary screening test influence women's anxiety and intention to screen for cervical cancer? A randomized survey of Norwegian women.

BACKGROUND: Countries must decide whether or not to replace primary cytology-based screening with primary human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening. We aimed to assess how primary screening for an HPV infection, a sexually transmitted infection (STI), and the type of information included in the invitation letter, will affect screening intention. METHODS: We randomized a representative sample of Norwegian women to one of three invitation letters: 1) Pap smear, 2) HPV testing or 3) HPV testing with additional information about the nature of the infection. The impact of anxiety sensitivity, bodily expectations, and cultural beliefs on menstrual symptom reporting: a test of the menstrual reactivity hypothesis.

According to the menstrual reactivity hypothesis, certain women report more severe as well as a greater number of menstrual symptoms due to accurate reports of physical symptoms and expectations (e.g., cultural beliefs, sex roles, bodily sensations). To test this hypothesis and to further examine the role that anxiety sensitivity plays in menstrual symptom reporting, women varying in levels of anxiety sensitivity completed measures of sex role socialization, menstrual attitudes, bodily preoccupations, affect, and fear of illness. To assess psychophysiological reactivity and the applicability o

Fearlessness as an Underlying Mechanism Leading to Conduct Problems: Testing the Intermediate Effects of Parenting, Anxiety, and callous-unemotional Traits.

This study investigates whether the longitudinal association between fearlessness and conduct problems (CP) is mediated by warm and harsh parenting, parent-child conflict, anxiety, and callous-unemotional (CU) traits. The constructs under investigation were assessed at five different time points, spanning a period of eight years. A multi-informant approach was followed, collecting data from parents and teachers (N = 2,121; 47% girls). The structural equation model pointed to both direct and indirect pathways between fearlessness and CP. Specifically, findings suggested that Time 1 fearlessness

Behavioral avoidance tasks for eliciting disgust and anxiety in contamination fear: An examination of a test for a combined disgust and fear reaction.

While research supports the role of disgust in contamination OCD, there is also an overlap with fear in motivating avoidance. The "heebie-jeebies" is an emotional response associated with fear and disgust that motivates avoidance of contact with skin-transmitted pathogens (e.g., parasites). This motivation aligns with characteristics of contamination OCD. From a screening of undergraduate students (N = 188), contamination fearful (n = 14), high trait-anxious (n = 14), and low trait-anxious (n = 18) groups were created. Participants engaged in disgust, fear, and "heebie-jeebies" behavioral avoi

Neurodevelopmental testing of mice in the neonatal period does not affect their locomotor activity, depressive- and anxiety-like behaviour in adolescence.

Neonatal life is a sensitive period of brain plasticity. There are concerns that pre-weaning handling may therefore alter behavioural phenotype in adolescence or adulthood. Since neurodevelopment tests require daily manipulation with pups, later behavioural outcomes might be biased by repeated handling during suckling period. The aim of our study was to assess whether daily neurodevelopmental testing would cause alterations in behavioural phenotype. Sixty-four CD1 mice were randomized to tested and not tested group. In the tested group, maturation of physical features and neurodevelopment were

Testing the metacognitive model against the benchmark CBT model of social anxiety disorder: Is it time to move beyond cognition?

The recommended treatment for Social Phobia is individual Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT-treatments emphasize social self-beliefs (schemas) as the core underlying factor for maladaptive self-processing and social anxiety symptoms. However, the need for such beliefs in models of psychopathology has recently been questioned. Specifically, the metacognitive model of psychological disorders asserts that particular beliefs about thinking (metacognitive beliefs) are involved in most disorders, including social anxiety, and are a more important factor underlying pathology. Comparing the rel

A test of the core process account of psychopathology in a heterogenous clinical sample of anxiety and depression: A case of the blind men and the elephant?

Many cognitive and behavioral processes, such as selective attention to threat, self-focused attention, safety-seeking behaviors, worry and thought suppression, have their foundations in research on anxiety disorders. Yet, they are now known to be transdiagnostic, i.e. shared across a wide range of psychological disorders. A more pertinent clinical and theoretical question is whether these processes are themselves distinct, or whether they reflect a shared 'core' process that maintains psychopathology. The current study utilized a treatment-seeking clinical adult sample of 313 individuals with

Does relational dysfunction mediate the association between anxiety disorders and later depression? Testing an interpersonal model of comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders tend to precede onset of comorbid depression. Several researchers have suggested a causal role for anxiety in promoting depressive episodes, but few studies have identified specific mechanisms. The current study proposes an interpersonal model of comorbidity, where anxiety disorders disrupt interpersonal functioning, which in turn elevates risk for depression. METHODS: At age 15 (T1), 815 adolescents oversampled for maternal depression completed diagnostic interviews, social chronic stress interviews, and self-report measures. At age 20 (T2), participants repeate
