A potential male contraceptive approach was evaluated in clinical trials involving monthly injections of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate and either subdermal implants of testosterone propionate or monthly injections of testosterone enanthate. Pregnancies occurred in partners of 9 men with recent sperm counts of 10 million/ml or below. In 5 of the 9 instances, the sperm counts were less than 1 million/ml. Adult ovariectomized female rats received a testosterone-propionate (TP)-filled silastic implant and were tested for mounting behavior seven days later. Exposure to estrous female urine but not to urine from ovariectomized females increased the number of TP-treated females that displayed mounting behavior. Olfactory bulb removal on its own and peripheral anosmia induced by intranasal ZnSO4 application impaired mounting behavior. These results are discussed with respect to the effects of anosmia on copulatory behavior in the male.

Forty-three patients with disseminated or inoperable carcinoma of the breast were treated with Metenolone Enanthate (Primobolan Depot) with doses of 400 to 1 200 mg/week for at least 3 months. Objective remissions lasting longer than 3 months occurred in 8 out of 41 evaluable patients. Soft tissue metastases responsed best. Liver and brain metastases were unaffected. The therapeutic efficiency of Primobolan Depot is comparable to that of testosterone propionate but the agent is less virilising.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone treatment of rats produces prostatic hypertrophy and detrusor overactivity. Whether or not the detrusor overactivity can be related to an increase in the responsiveness of lower urinary tract smooth muscles is not known.
