Evaluation of cutaneous sensation in myelodysplastic children, using electrical stimulation.

A new method, cutaneous electrical stimulation, was compared with the standard neurological examination for its effectiveness in detecting cutaneous sensation. Both methods provided clear and congruous results for 45 per cent of the patients. However, for the other 55 per cent, cutaneous electrical stimulation frequently detected sensation at sites which were classified as anaesthetic on standard neurological examination. Electrical stimulation also was able to indicate sensation in a group of infants too young to be evaluated by standard neurological evaluation.

Evaluation of postprandial thermal feeling in mice using a behavioral thermoregulation analysis: Differences in meat species and their fractions.

Classification of the thermal nature of meat in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) varies depending on the meat species and their fractions. The objectives of this study were to establish an experimental system to evaluate postprandial thermal feeling based on behavioral thermoregulation, investigate it among different meat species and their fractions, and clarify the relationship between their thermal nature and the active meat constituents that affect thermal feeling. Freeze-dried meat, defatted meat, and extracted fat were prepared from horse meat, chicken, pork, beef, mutton, and venison.

Thermoregulation and thermal sensation during whole-body water immersion at different water temperatures in healthy individuals: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Severe thermal discomfort may increase risk of drowning due to hypothermia or hyperthermia from prolonged exposure to noxious water temperatures. The importance of using a behavioral thermoregulation model with thermal sensation may predict the thermal load that the human body receives when exposed to various immersive water conditions. However, there is no thermal sensation "gold standard" model specific for water immersion. This scoping review aims to present a comprehensive overview regarding human physiological and behavioral thermoregulation during whole-body water immersion a

Effect of change in ambient temperature on core temperature during the daytime.

In this study, the hypothesis is tested that continuous increases in ambient temperature (Ta) during daytime would give elevated core and skin temperatures, and consequently better thermal sensation and comfort. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperatures and regional dry heat losses at 7 sites were continuously measured for 10 Japanese male subjects in three thermal conditions: cond. 1, stepwise increases in Ta from 26 °C at 9 h00 to 30 °C at 18 h00; cond. 2, steady Ta at 28 °C from 9 h00 to 18 h00 and cond. 3, stepwise decreases in Ta from 30 °C at 9 h00 to 26 °C at 18 h00. An endogenous pain control system is altered in subjects with interstitial cystitis.

PURPOSE: Multiple studies have demonstrated that in healthy subjects, painful stimuli applied to one part of the body inhibit pain sensation in other parts of the body, a phenomenon referred to as conditioned pain modulation. Conditioned pain modulation is related to the presence of endogenous pain control systems. Studies have demonstrated deficits in conditioned pain modulation associated inhibition in many but not all chronic pain disorders. In this study we determine whether conditioned pain modulation is altered in subjects with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. MATERIALS AND

[The extent of temperature sense and pain appreciation recovery in the dermatomes of cauda equine roots after lumbar intervertebral dischernia elimination].

Temperature sense and pain appreciation has been studied in the dermatomes of cauda equine roots in patients with lumbar intervertebral disc hernia before treatment, in the immediate and long-term periods of observation after disc hernia elimination. Temperature sense and pain appreciation has been determined to be disordered not only in the dermatome of compressed root, but in the dermatomes located proximally and distally as well. The manifestation of negative changes was observed to a greater extent during temperature sense examination. After disc hernia elimination the recovery of temperat

Pain sensitivity, alexithymia, and depression in patients with eating disorders: are they related?

A decreased sensitivity to painful stimuli and high scores for alexithymia and depression have been observed in patients with eating disorders. We investigated the relationship between these factors in 22 patients with anorexia nervosa, 18 patients with bulimia nervosa, and 32 healthy subjects. Alexithymia was assessed using the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale and depression using the Beck Depression Inventory. Patients with bulimia exhibited significantly higher thresholds to mechanically induced pain than healthy subjects. Thresholds to thermally induced pain in patients with anorexia or b

Effect of starting temperature on the repeatability of thermotactile thresholds.

Hand-transmitted vibration has been observed to cause a wide variety of different signs and symptoms of neurological dysfunction. Different tests of tactile sensitivity, encompassing sensations of pressure, vibration, pain and temperature have been employed in the quantification of the sensorineural effects of vibration. However, since the results of such tests are dependent on different variables, and different versions of each test are used in different laboratories, the results are rarely reported in a manner allowing a direct comparison of results between studies. This paper reports on an

Age-related changes in oral sensation.

Oral sensation (including two-point discrimination, oral stereognosis, vibrotactile detection, somesthetic sensitivity, proprioception, and thermal sensitivity) was studied in 60 healthy adults in five age categories: 20 to 34, 35 to 49, 50 to 64, 65 to 79, and 80 years and above. Thermal and somesthetic sensitivity as well as proprioception did not change with age. Ability to differentiate tactile and vibratory sensation on the lip decreased after age 80 (P less than .01), but vibration detection on the soft palate did not change. Stereognostic ability remained good up to age 80, and then dec

Mechanoreceptor response to mechanical and thermal stimuli in the glans penis of the dog.

In the dog, we isolated 126 mechanoreceptive afferent fibers of the A-delta myelinated fiber class from the dorsal nerve of the penis using microdissection and extracellular electrophysiological techniques. Receptive fields on the glans penis were stimulated with a computer-controlled mechanostimulator and Peltier effect thermostimulator. The great majority of units were categorized as either rapidly adapting (RA) or slowly adapting (SA) and were located primarily proximally and distally, respectively, on the glans. In comparison to values from other glabrous skin regions in other species, mea

Studies on gustatory responses of amygdaloid neurons in rats.

The responses of 80 amygdaloid neurons to the four basic taste (sucrose, NaCl, HCl and quinine hydrochloride), thermal (5 degrees C, 20 degrees C and 40 degrees C) and tactile (brushing) stimuli applied to the anterior part of the tongue were recorded in anesthetized rats. About 90% of the taste-sensitive amygdaloid neurons responded to thermal and/or tactile stimulations of the tongue as well, and some of them showed convergent responses to tactile stimulation of various parts of the body and to acoustic stimulation. Most (86%) amygdaloid taste-sensitive neurons showed a phasic pattern of exc

Restoration of thermoregulatory response to body cooling by cooling hands and feet.

Deep body temperature fell progressively by 0.5-1.4 degrees C during 3-h immersions in 29 degrees C water. Both in unacclimatized volunteers and, to a lesser degree, in divers in cold-water training, cooling the hands and feet for 1 h in 12 degrees C water during such immersion caused sensation of cold, shivering, and rise in metabolic rate; it caused body temperature to rise in unacclimatized subjects and halted its fall in divers. Tissue conductances generally fell a little in divers but rose in unacclimatized subjects, probably because of muscle blood flow associated with the greater shiver

Real-time assessment of temperature sensitivity, pain processing, and pain behavior across the lifespan: Integrating stimulus data, contact force, and subjective ratings.

Assessments of temperature sensitivity and pain processing play an important role in psychological and psychiatry research, including with adolescent participants and across the lifespan. To ensure the validity and comparability of findings, experimental settings must be well tolerated and easily manageable for participants of all age groups and reliably monitored by the experimenter. These settings should promote reproducible procedures and support computer-assisted data acquisition and analysis to enable robust, efficient scientific evaluation. We present CAREST (Controlling and Recording Ex

Effects of visual thermal cues on thermal perception and thermoregulation while cycling in virtual reality.

Thermal perception and regulation are essential for physical exercise. The hue-heat hypothesis suggests that an environment's color temperature, e.g., warm reddish lighting or cold bluish lighting, affects thermal perception and regulation. Virtual reality (VR) enables immersion in any environment. Previous work showed that a VR environment can affect how warm or cold users feel during sedentary VR experiences. However, it is unclear whether such visual thermal cues also influence physiological and perceptual responses during physical exercise. Therefore, we conducted a controlled VR experimen

The impact of electric heating cape on local thermal sensation and thermal comfort of officers.

This study focuses on evaluating the thermoregulatory performance of a graphene-based electric heating cape and determining its optimal temperature for use in cool indoor environments during winter. Through controlled experiments with 30 participants in a climate chamber maintained at 15.5 °C, five heating conditions (no heating, 35 °C, 40 °C, 45 °C, and 50 °C) were systematically tested. Skin temperature and heart rate were continuously monitored, and subjective thermal sensation and comfort votes were collected using 7-point scales. Results demonstrated that the electric heating cape signifi

Evidence of heat sensitivity in people with Parkinson's disease.

Examining how heat affects people with Parkinson's disease is essential for informing clinical decision-making, safety, well-being, and healthcare planning. While there is evidence that the neuropathology associated with Parkinson's disease affects thermoregulatory mechanisms, little attention has been given to the association of heat sensitivity to worsening symptoms and restricted daily activities in people with this progressive disease. Using a cross-sectional study design, we examined the experiences of people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the heat. Two-hundred and forty-seven peop

Thermosensory behaviors of the free-living life stages of Strongyloides species support parasitism in tropical environments.

Soil-transmitted parasitic nematodes infect over 1 billion people worldwide and are a common source of neglected disease. Strongyloides stercoralis is a potentially fatal skin-penetrating human parasite that is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The complex life cycle of Strongyloides species is unique among human-parasitic nematodes in that it includes a single free-living generation featuring soil-dwelling, bacterivorous adults whose progeny all develop into infective larvae. The sensory behaviors that enable free-living Strongyloides adults to navigate and survive
