To investigate the differences in functional brain network structures between patients with a high level of generalized anxiety disorder (HGAD) and those with a low level of generalized anxiety disorder (LGAD), a resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded in 30 LGAD patients and 21 HGAD patients. Functional connectivity between all pairs of brain regions was determined by the Phase Lag Index (PLI) to construct a functional brain network. Then, the characteristic path length, clustering coefficient, and small world were calculated to estimate functional brain network structures. The

Electrical brain stimulation has become an essential treatment option for more than one third of epilepsy patients who are resistant to pharmacological therapy and are not candidates for surgical resection. However, currently approved stimulation paradigms achieve only moderate success, on average providing approximately 75% reduction in seizure frequency and extended periods of seizure freedom in nearly 20% of patients. Outcomes from electrical stimulation may be improved through the identification of novel anatomical targets, particularly those with significant anatomical and functional conn

The changes of 272 EEG parameters in 252 women and 97 men during the period of life of 16 to 45 years in increments of one month were investigated. Correlation analysis and approximations were used. Ontogenetic regression of amplitude and power amplitude and power of alpha, theta, delta, but not beta rhythms predominantly in the right posterior cortex leads in women was more regressive than in men was shown. Overall ontogenetic tendency to fall to the nonlinear amplitude and power of EEG rhythms with age is reproduced in both sexes. Frequency of rhythms in the course of ontogeny, as a rule, wa

Studies have shown that reward-related feedback is processed by distinct brain networks. Neuronal oscillations, particularly theta and beta rhythms, play a key role in facilitating communications within these networks. This study investigated how modulating brain oscillations at theta and beta frequencies using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) influences activation in brain regions involved in feedback processing. In three separate sessions, 28 healthy participants received either theta (5 Hz), beta (25 Hz), or sham tACS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) w

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) acting through heteropentameric GABAA receptors plays a pivotal role in the sleep-promoting circuitry. Whereas the role of the different GABAA receptor α-subunits in sleep regulation and in mediating the effect of benzodiazepines for treatment of insomnia is well-described, the β-subunits are less studied. Here we report the first study characterizing sleep in mice lacking the GABAA receptor β1 -subunit (β1-/- mice). We show that β1-/- mice have a distinct and abnormal sleep phenotype characterized by increased delta power in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and d

Factor Analysis represents an important method of extracting salient features from EEG data condensing functional as well as spatial informations in a few factors and so reducing redundancy of multi-channels computerized EEG data. A 16-channel computerized frequency analysis of background brain electrical activity during 3 functional conditions (eyes closed, eyes open and hyperventilation) were performed in 2 groups, 50 healthy subjects and 14 epileptic patients with generalized seizures. The differences in each frequency band between the 2 groups have been assessed by means of factor scores.

Neuronal oscillations and cross-frequency interactions in the rat hippocampus relate in important ways to memory processes and serve as a model for studying oscillatory activity in cognition more broadly. We report here that hippocampal synchrony (CA3-CA1 coherence) increased markedly in the low gamma range as rats were exploring novel objects, particularly those for which the rat subsequently showed good memory. The gamma synchrony varied across phases of the theta rhythm such that coherence was highest at the falling slope and trough of the theta wave. Further, the shape of the theta wave wa

Selective attention supports top-down control by biasing information processing toward stimuli that are potentially relevant to the immediate goal. It has been recently proposed that theta band oscillations (~4-8 Hz) in the frontal midline regions are a key mechanism of endogenous selective attention. The current electroencephalography study investigated theta oscillatory dynamics using an inter-sensory cueing paradigm in which a symbolic cue indicated, on a trial-by-trial basis, the modality (visual or auditory) of the upcoming discrimination task. Time-frequency analyses were used to quantif

Parvalbumin-positive (PV+) γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons are critically involved in producing rapid network oscillations and cortical microcircuit computations, but the significance of PV+ axon myelination to the temporal features of inhibition remains elusive. Here, using toxic and genetic mouse models of demyelination and dysmyelination, respectively, we find that loss of compact myelin reduces PV+ interneuron presynaptic terminals and increases failures, and the weak phasic inhibition of pyramidal neurons abolishes optogenetically driven gamma oscillations in vivo. Strikingly, dur

In the rat, paradoxical sleep (PS) is preceded by a short-lasting stage characterized by high amplitude cortical spindles and low frequency hippocampal theta rhythm. This intermediate stage (IS) is massively extended at the expense of PS by barbiturates and benzodiazepines. To further study the relationship between the IS and PS, six rats were PS deprived for 48 h by sitting on one of three small platforms surrounded by water. A control group of six other rats remained in dry cages with shavings. After 24 h PS deprivation the latency of IS occurrence increased, was unchanged after 48 h depriva

Recent findings have shown the influential role of theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling in the maintenance of items in working memory (WM). Specifically, it has been proposed that individual items are represented within gamma oscillations that are nested within slower theta waves. Thus, longer theta cycles would theoretically allow the retention of more items. On the basis of this theory, the present preregistered study aimed to test whether slowing theta rhythms via 4 Hz of transcranial alternating current stimulation over the frontoparietal network improves WM capacity. Given the potential r

It has long been postulated that exogenous cannabinoids have a profound effect on human cognitive functioning. These cannabinoid effects are thought to depend, at least in parts, on alterations of phase-locking of local field potential neuronal firing. The latter can be measured as activity in the theta frequency band (4-7Hz) by electroencephalogram. Theta oscillations are supposed to serve as a mechanism in neural representations of behaviorally relevant information. However, it remains unknown whether variability in endogenous cannabinoid activity is involved in theta rhythms and therefore,

Do cerebrovascular and Alzheimer's disease (AD) lesions represent additive factors in the development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as a putative preclinical stage of AD? Here we tested the hypothesis that directionality of fronto-parietal functional coupling of electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms is relatively preserved in amnesic MCI subjects in whom the cognitive decline is mainly explained by white-matter vascular load. Resting EEG was recorded in 40 healthy elderly (Nold) and 78 amnesic MCI. In the MCI subjects, white-matter vascular load was quantified based on magnetic resonance

OBJECTIVE: To identify the brain networks that are involved in the different electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities in patients with ring chromosome 20 [r(20)] syndrome. We hypothesize the existence of both distinctive and common brain circuits for the paroxysmal high voltage sharp waves (hSWs), the seizures, and the slow-wave 3-7 Hz rhythm that characterize this condition.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with [r(20)] syndrome were studied by means of EEG simultaneously recorded with functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI). EEG traces were reviewed in order to detect the pathologic in

According to the neural efficiency hypothesis (NEH), individuals with higher expertise in a domain use their brain more efficiently when processing domain-specific tasks and show more efficient brain activity than individuals with lower expertise. In this study 64 participants with differing levels of volleyball expertise were recruited to investigate the NEH by means of a volleyball-specific tactical decision-making task. The participants, which were allocated to three different expertise groups (based on prior volleyball experience), saw videos of setting situations of real volleyball matche

Even simple actions like opening a door require integration/binding and flexible reactivation of different motor elements. Yet, the neural mechanisms underlying the processing of such "embedded response plans" are largely elusive, despite theoretical frameworks, such as the theory of event coding, describing the involved cognitive processes. In a sample of n = 40 healthy participants, we combine time-frequency decomposition and various beamforming methods to examine the neurophysiological dynamics of such action plans, with special emphasis on the interplay of theta and beta frequency activity

Depression rates surge in adolescence, particularly among females. Recent findings suggest that depressed adolescents are characterized by hypersensitivity to negative outcomes and blunted responsiveness to rewards. However, our understanding of the pathophysiology and time course of these abnormalities remains limited. Due to their high temporal resolution, event-related potentials (ERPs) provide an ideal probe to investigate these processes. In the present study, healthy (n = 25) and depressed (n = 26) female adolescents (13-18 years) completed a gambling task during 128-channel ERP recordin

A single intraperitoneal injection of MPTP neurotoxin (30 mg/kg) in C57BL/6 mice causes desynchronization of EEG with a decrease of theta-1 activity and a growth of beta activity in the interval of 15-30 Hz. Subchronic administration of the new antiparkinsonian drug hemantane (injection form) in a dose of 10 mg/kg makes the power of MPTP-induced beta oscillations less pronounced and leads to its reliable decrease within 24 h. This effect of hemantane administration was manifested during the entire period of observations.
