Lipoic acid: an immunomodulator that attenuates glycinin-induced anaphylactic reactions in a rat model.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attenuation effects of consuming a small dose of lipoic acid on soybean glycinin-induced hypersensitivity using a rat model. Sensitized by gavage with glycinin, weaned rats were orally supplemented with the diet containing 12.5 mug of lipoic acid/g (per diet). Results showed that untreated, sensitized rats demonstrated an increase in the level of serum IgE, the level of histamine release, and incidence of diarrhea and reduced growth performance compared with the controls (P < 0.05). Lipoic acid significantly (P < 0.05) improved growth performance w

Effect of surface conjugation chemistry on the sensitivity of microcantilever sensors.

Microcantilever sensors are an offshoot of atomic force microscopy and are useful tools for effectively detecting a target biomolecule. The recognition of the target molecule on the biosensor is based on the physical bending of the microcantilever, which is driven by a specific molecular interaction between the target molecule and the sensor surface. In this study, to enhance the sensitivity of the microcantilever sensor, the sensor surface was modified through a surface conjugation method using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and heterobifunctional cross-linkers. After the surface modificati

Maturity-onset diabetes mellitus--toward a physiological appropriate management.

"Eumetabolic" therapies of diabetes are defined as those which promote and potentiate a normal physiological pattern of insulin activity--in contrast to the less subtle effects of exogenous insulin or sulfonylureas. Effective eumetabolic therapy would provide better metabolic control and reduce the risk of secondary complications, would be more convenient to administer, and would be especially appropriate for preventive use in the early stages of diabetes. Possible components of a eumetabolic therapy include: aspirin, as a potentiator of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion; GTF, to directly e

Antioxidants inhibit SAA formation and pro-inflammatory cytokine release in a human cell model of alkaptonuria.

OBJECTIVE: Alkaptonuria (AKU) is an ultra-rare autosomal recessive disease that currently lacks an appropriate therapy. Recently we provided experimental evidence that AKU is a secondary serum amyloid A (SAA)-based amyloidosis. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the use of antioxidants to inhibit SAA amyloid and pro-inflammatory cytokine release in AKU. METHODS: We adopted a human chondrocytic cell AKU model to evaluate the anti-amyloid capacity of a set of antioxidants that had previously been shown to counteract ochronosis in a serum AKU model. Amyloid presence was evaluated by Con

Evaluation of the neuroprotective effects of alpha lipoic acid-loaded folate-conjugated chitosan nanoparticles against 6-OHDA-induced apoptosis and oxidative stress in an in vitro Parkinson's disease model.

Folate receptors, which mediate the cellular uptake of folic acid (FA) for essential processes such as DNA synthesis and repair, are expressed on neurons affected in Parkinson’s disease (PD). While the etiology of PD remains incompletely understood, oxidative stress is implicated as a key contributor. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant; however, its therapeutic application is limited by instability, low bioavailability, and an unpleasant odor. Nanotechnology offers a promising strategy to overcome these limitations. This study aimed to develop and characterize folic acid-conjugate

Reversal of metabolic deficits by lipoic acid in a triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease: a 13C NMR study.

Alzheimer's disease is an age-related neurodegenerative disease characterized by deterioration of cognition and loss of memory. Several clinical studies have shown Alzheimer's disease to be associated with disturbances in glucose metabolism and the subsequent tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle-related metabolites like glutamate (Glu), glutamine (Gln), and N-acetylaspartate (NAA). These metabolites have been viewed as biomarkers by (a) assisting early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and (b) evaluating the efficacy of a treatment regimen. In this study, 13-month-old triple transgenic mice (a mouse

Effects of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested the promising effects of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) as an antioxidant in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the results of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have been contradictory. This meta-analysis examined the effect of ALA supplementation on NAFLD patients. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched to include all eligible RCTs published up to February 2026. Weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to compare the changes in liver en

Adjuvant Lipoic acid Injection in Sepsis treatment in China (ALIS study): protocol for a randomised, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis is a life-threatening immune disorder resulting from an dysregulated host response to infection. Adjuvant therapy is a valuable complement to sepsis treatment. Lipoic acid has shown potential in attenuating sepsis-induced immune dysfunction and organ injury in vivo and in vitro studies. However, clinical evidence of lipoic acid injection in sepsis treatment is lacking. Hence, we devised a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of lipoic acid injection in improving the prognosis of sepsis or septic shock patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 3

The Role of Alpha-lipoic Acid Supplementation in the Prevention of Diabetes Complications: A Comprehensive Review of Clinical Trials.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a substantial antioxidant in the prevention of diabetes and diabetes complications. It can regenerate other antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin C, Coenzyme Q10 and glutathione and is often known as a universal antioxidant. Antioxidants play a role in diabetes treatment due to hyperglycemia-induced stimulation of the polyol pathway and formation of advanced glycation end products (AGE) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Clinical trials examining alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy, cardiomyopathy and erectile dysfunction display posi
