A 9-year-old girl with atopic dermatitis developed persistent plaques on the lips, hands, and fingers that were unresponsive to topical steroids. Her mother reported that she was "addicted" to costume jewelry and developed rashes in reaction to a number of adornments, ranging from rubber bracelets to costume metal jewelry and belt buckles. A careful history of jewelry exposures was taken and patch testing was performed to identify allergenic sources. Patch testing revealed allergy to nickel, gold, and thiuram mix. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: This study characterizes concomitant reactions to carba mix (CM) and thiuram mix (TM) in a large North American population. Because thiurams and dithiocarbamates have structural similarity, concomitant reactions are expected.
METHODS: The 1994-2016 North American Contact Dermatitis Group data were analyzed. Patients with a final reaction interpreted as "allergic" to either CM or TM were included.

Results from 3 1/2 years of routine patch testing with 3-iodo-2-propynyl-butylcarbamate (IPBC) are presented. From 1996 to 1999, a total of 3168 persons (2093 women and 1075 men) were patch tested with IPBC, and 7 cases were found to be positive. In 2 cases, sensitization could be attributed to cosmetics, and in a further 2 cases cosmetics were the most likely cause of sensitisation. Eczema (dermatitis) of the hands of medical personnel is a common skin disease. Occupational dermatitis of the hands arises from frequent contact with irritants and sensitizing agents. Differential diagnosis in hand eczema is usually only possible from the case history. One diagnostic tool is the screening of relevant contact allergies by patch-testing. The most frequent allergen in 114 cases of eczema of the hands in medical personnel between 1976 and 1980 at the Department of Dermatology and Allergology of the Municipal Hospital Schwabing in Munich was formaldehyde in 24 instances (i.e. 21%)
