Changes of plasma thromboxane level in subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) were studied clinically and experimentally using 11-dehydro-thromboxane B2 (11 DTX) as a measuring index. 11 DTX is a major long-lived metabolite formed from thromboxane (TX) B2, and is said to be a more reliable parameter for detecting TXA2 production in biological systems. The in vivo and in vitro effects of radioopaque agents such as bilignost, iodamide, and triombrast on blood thromboxane B2 (TxB2) and prostacyclin levels were studied in man and rats. A prospective study of 10 neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and five controls to determine the importance of prostanoid concentrations perioperatively and the relation with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH) is reported. In neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia postoperative concentrations of the vasoconstrictor thromboxane B2 rose significantly and were higher during episodes of PPH; this rise may provoke PPH and subsequent right to left shunting.
