Carcinoid tumors of the thymus and Cushing's syndrome: Clinicopathologic features and current best evidence regarding the cell of origin of these unusual neoplasms.

It is uncertain whether thymic neuroendocrine tumors (NET) associated with Cushing's syndrome (CS) produce corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and whether the thymus contains ACTH and/or CRH cells that could originate NET. The clinicopathologic features of 5 typical (TC) and 6 atypical carcinoids (ATC), 10 additional non-neoplastic thymi, 6 adrenal glands with bilateral nodular hyperplasia and 8 adrenal cortical adenomas were reviewed. Representative slides were immunostained for ACTH and CRH. Four (36.4%) of the 11 patients had CS. The incidence of Mas

Estrogen-induced neuroimmunomodulation as facilitator of and barrier to reproductive aging in brain and lymphoid organs.

Reproductive aging in females is marked by alterations in gonadal hormones, estrogen and progesterone, that facilitate cessation of reproductive cycles and onset of female-specific diseases such as autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases, hormone-dependent cancers, and osteoporosis. Bidirectional communication between the three homeostatic systems, nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system, is essential for the maintenance of health and any dysfunction in the cross-talk promotes the development of diseases and cancer. The pleiotropic effects of estrogen on neural-immune interaction

Primary hyperparathyroidism caused by a tiny mediastinal parathyroid adenoma with non-localising imaging studies.

Variations in parathyroid gland positions often cause failure in initial parathyroid adenoma surgery, especially when imaging fails to localise the adenoma. This report describes a female patient with primary hyperparathyroidism for which preoperative localisation studies did not determine the position of the hyperfunctioning gland. The initial approach with bilateral cervical exploration and intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring was performed unsuccessfully. A mediastinal adenoma was suspected due to meticulous negative neck exploration and repeated negative images for a neck adenoma.

Photoperiodic modulation of local melatonin synthesis and its role in regulation of thymic homeostasis in Funambulus pennanti.

The effect of photo-neuroendocrine system on the thymic (immune) functions is mediated by gonadal steroid and the pineal hormone melatonin. The present study explored the effect of photoperiod on the thymic melatonergic system and its role in protection of thymic T-cells from the testosterone induced seasonal oxidative stress and apoptosis. Exposure to long day-length (LD) was noted to decrease local (thymic) melatonin content and induce oxidative stress and apoptosis in the thymus. Increased peripheral level of testosterone upregulated the androgen receptor expression and, consequently reduce

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus complicated by Cushing's syndrome. Report of a 58-year-old woman with a 3-year history of hypertension.

A 58-year-old woman with a history of Cushing's syndrome for three years presented with a mediastinal mass and received the diagnosis of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus invading the pericardium. On immunohistochemical study, the neoplastic cells reacted with antibodies against cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, neuron-specific enolase, chromogranin, synaptophysin, and ACTH. Clinicopathologic findings of this rare case of ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome are discussed with a literature review.

Physiological relevance of thyroid stimulating hormone and thyroid stimulating hormone receptor in tissues other than the thyroid.

Decades of research have provided strong evidence for a reciprocal relationship between the immune system and hormones of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), in particular, has been shown to have a variety of immune-regulating cytokine-like activities that can influence the outcome of T cell development in the thymus and intestine, and can affect the magnitude of antibody and cell-mediated responses of peripheral lymphocytes. Production of TSH and the expression of the TSH receptor are widely but selectively distributed across many different types

[Morphological features of the thymus in heliotrin hepatitis upon administration of immunostimulators].

Structural changes of thymus in heliotrin hepatitis were characterized by distinct dynamics which on the whole suggested the progressing hypoplasia of its cortex. Immunostimulants parandin and thymalin suppressed the extent of thymocyte destruction and stimulated their mitotic activity. Although these parameters did not reach the control levels, the significant deceleration of hypoplastic processes in thymus, particularly in its cortex, were detected. Effect of immunostimulants was independent on the time of their administration in respect to heliotrin injection.

The thymosins. Prothymosin alpha, parathymosin, and beta-thymosins: structure and function.

The studies on thymosins were initiated in 1965, when the group of A. White searched for thymic factors responsible for the physiological functions of thymus. To restore thymic functions in thymic-deprived or immunodeprived animals, as well as in humans with primary immuno-deficiency diseases and in immunosuppressed patients, a standardized extract from bovine thymus gland called thymosin fraction 5 was prepared. Thymosin fraction 5 indeed improved immune response. It turned out that thymosin fraction 5 consists of a mixture of small polypeptides. Later on, several of these peptides (polypepti

Induction of E-rosette-promoting factor in human plasma by levamisole: an assessment in a patient with partial DiGeorge syndrome.

A male infant with partial DiGeorge syndrome responded to weekly administration of levamisole (2.5 mg/kg of body weight) with an increase of circulating E-rosette-forming T cells. Thymic hormone activity in plasma appeared to be elevated to a near-normal level of 11.6 ng thymopoietin equivalent/ml after levamisole administration. The in vitro incubation studies indicated that levamisole by itself had no E-rosette-promoting ability, but a dialysable and relatively heat-stable plasma factor induced by levamisole both in the patient and in healthy individuals had E-rosette-promoting activity for

Irradiated fetal thymus transplantation in a patient with combined immunodeficiency with predominant T cell defect.

A 6 month old boy was diagnosed as a case of combined immunodeficiency (with predominant T cell defect by previous classification). His T cell count was decreased, his B cell count in peripheral blood was increased, his serum IgG level was decreased, his serum IgM level was normal and the thymus was not evident on CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging. Administration of the thymus hormone, thymosin, led to a partial recovery of T cell function without normalization of the T cell count. At age 26 months the patient received an irradiated thymus transplantation from a 16 week old female fetus.

Thymic hormonal activity on human peripheral blood lymphocytes, in vitro. V. Effect on induction of lymphocytotoxicity.

Thymic hormonal effect on lymphocytotoxicity induced in vitro and its target specificity were tested using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of healthy subjects. PBMC were treated by the thymic extract TP-1, a similarly prepared spleen extract (SE) or medium only (1 h, 37 degrees C) and then induced to express cytotoxic activity by exposure to allogeneic tumor cells in mixed cultures or by Con A stimulation. The cytotoxicity developed after several days in culture was assayed on 51Cr labelled tumor cells. TP-1 caused a significant mean enhancement of cytotoxicity induced and assayed on

[Opiate receptors of peripheral blood lymphocytes (effect of morphine and naloxone on human T-lymphocytes)].

Using the method of spontaneous rosette formation the authors studied the effects of morphine and naloxone (a specific morphine antagonist) on T-lymphocytes of man peripheral blood. Treatment of the lymphocytes with morphine led to a diminution of the number of rosette-forming cells. Naloxone did not influence the rosette formation process, but eliminated the specific effect of morphine. The opiate receptors on the thymus-dependent lymphocytes may be an instrument of hormonal regulation of cell interaction processes in individual lymphocyte populations.

Purinergic signalling in endocrine organs.

There is widespread involvement of purinergic signalling in endocrine biology. Pituitary cells express P1, P2X and P2Y receptor subtypes to mediate hormone release. Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) regulates insulin release in the pancreas and is involved in the secretion of thyroid hormones. ATP plays a major role in the synthesis, storage and release of catecholamines from the adrenal gland. In the ovary purinoceptors mediate gonadotrophin-induced progesterone secretion, while in the testes, both Sertoli and Leydig cells express purinoceptors that mediate secretion of oestradiol and testoster

A six-year-old boy with a suspicious thyroid nodule: intrathyroidal thymic tissue.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic intrathyroidal thymus tissue that forms mass lesions as a consequence of aberrant thymic migration during embryogenesis is rarely reported in the literature. METHODS: We present the case of a 6-year-old boy with a right thyroid nodule and bilateral cervical lymph nodes. Thyroid hormone, antibodies, and routine chemistry tests were normal. Real-time thyroid ultrasound showed a right calcified nodule measuring 8 x 5 x 7 mm and multiple bilateral cervical lymph nodes. I131 scan showed mild decreased uptake in the right upper lobe. On fine-needle aspiration biopsy we discovere

Cyclosporin A antagonizes phenylephrine, oxytocin and angiotensin effects on glucose metabolism in rat thymus lymphocytes.

Effects of phenylephrine, oxytocin and angiotensin on fructose 2,6-bisphosphate (Fru 2,6-P2) content and glycolytic parameters were studied in incubated thymus lymphocytes. These hormones modified Fru 2,6-P2 content dependent upon the energetic status of the cells. In non-preincubated thymus lymphocytes (with relatively high levels of glycogen and ATP), phenylephrine, oxytocin and angiotensin depressed Fru 2,6-P2 content in a dose-dependent manner. The opposite was found when the cells were preincubated for 2 h without substrates (low levels of ATP and glycogen). Changes in lactate release wer

Thymic peptides in immune reconstitution and clinical outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Patients with hematologic malignancies or nonmalignant diseases may undergo allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), which represents a potential curative treatment. However, they are still at risk of life-threatening complications, such as relapse, acute graft-versus-host disease, and opportunistic infections. These complications are more likely if T-cell reconstitution is delayed during the initial 3 to 4 months after HCT. Therefore, it is of clinical importance to advance early peripheral T-cell expansion. The thymus is the cradle of T-cell production, but it is extremely sensit

Evidence for thymopoietin and thymopoietin/alpha-bungarotoxin/nicotinic receptors within the brain.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Thymopoietin, a polypeptide hormone of the thymus that has pleiotropic actions on the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems, potently interacts with the neuromuscular nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. Thymopoietin binds to the nicotinic alpha-bungarotoxin (alpha-BGT) receptor in muscle and, like alpha-BGT, inhibits cholinergic transmission at this site. Evidence is given that radiolabeled thymopoietin similarly binds to a nicotinic alpha-BGT-binding site within the brain and does so with the characteristics of a specific receptor ligand. Thus specific binding to neuronal membranes was saturab
