Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA) is a novel technique that allows the thyroid to be approached without visible scars, as it is performed through a natural orifice. It was first described and developed in Asia where due to sociocultural reasons neck scars are considered a stigma. This technique, as we now nowadays, and its preliminary results, were first reported by Angkoon Anuwong in August 2015 at the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) world surgery congress held in Bangkok. Here we present the TOETVA approach, step-by-step, in order it could

The safety of thyroid surgery in terms of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and hypoparathyroidism has increased over the last decade. In this study, we present a new method of tension-free thyroidectomy (TFT), which could be used to further decrease the complication rate after a thyroidectomy. The procedure is based on the medial approach to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the parathyroid glands after the division of the isthmus and successive complete dissection of Berry's ligament. In total, 92 patients (127 nerves at risk) underwent "tension-free thyroidectomy" (TFT) between August and Nov

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) was first described in 1999 and it has become a widespread technique performed worldwide. Although initially limited to benign thyroid nodules, MIVAT was progressively adopted for all types of thyroid diseases, while remaining within the selection criteria. It is reported that, in selected cases, MIVAT is comparable to standard open thyroidectomy (SOT) in terms of oncologic radicality, time, costs and complications rate, with the advantage of a better cosmetic result and a lower post-operative pain.

To investigate the risk factors for hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy. Methods: Clinical data of 492 patients, who underwent thyroidectomy from April 2015 to December 2016 from Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, were studied retrospectively. Chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression were performed to find the risk factors for postoperative hypoparathyroidism. Results: The incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism was 43.5%, and the incidence of temporary and permanent hypoparathyroidism was 43.1% and 0.4%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that tumor pa

BACKGROUND: Hypoparathyroidism is the most common complication after thyroidectomy and the main reason for frequent outpatient visits; however, there is a poor understanding of its outcomes and no clear follow-up strategies are available. We aimed to predict post-thyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism outcomes and identify relevant factors.
METHODS: A multicenter, standardized prospective study was conducted. The parathyroid hormone level (PTH) was measured preoperatively and at the first hour after surgery, then at each outpatient follow-up visit after 1 week, 3 weeks, and 1 month, and then every

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy is caused by parathyroid trauma. There are no studies regarding the usefulness of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) as a monitor of postoperative hypoparathyroidism tool in pediatrics. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of intra- and postoperative PTH to predict the risk of developing post thyroidectomy hypocalcemia in children.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted in 32 pediatric patients (3.2-17.6 years old) undergoing total thyroidectomy. Intact PTH measured by the assays (Immulite Immunoassay System [ICMA] or

OBJECTIVES: Graves' disease (GD) is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, and accounts worldwide for 60-80% of all cases. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings, and is confirmed by the presence of TRAB, suppression of TSH, and elevation of free thyroxin (free T4), and triiodinethyronin (free T3). GD can be treated by antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, or surgery. The aim of this study was to review retrospectively the surgical management, in terms of safety and efficacy, in 50 patients operated in the Department of Surgical Sciences since 2005 through 2010 and followed up at the

OBJECTIVE: Thyroidectomy is a very common surgical procedure worldwide and is performed by surgeons with varied training. The outcome and complication rates are largely dependent on surgeon's skill and experience, the extent of surgery, indication of surgery and number of thyroid surgeries performed at that particular centre. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of postoperative complications after thyroid surgery in Hyderabad, Pakistan.
STUDY DESIGN: It was a descriptive study and was carried out at 2 private hospitals including a teaching University Hospital over a per

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) was set up and introduced in our department in 1998. Its results, after an acceptable relapse, can now be evaluated, also speculating on new possible indications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The procedure is based on a unique incision in the central neck, 2 cm above the sternal notch, using small conventional retractors and needlescopic (2 mm) reusable instruments. Haemostasis is achieved by a harmonic scalpel. Patients, 833, underwent MIVAT since June 1998. There were 715 females and 118 males (ratio 4:1). Lobectomy was c

The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate microsurgical thyroidectomy by comparing it with traditional thyroidectomy. Before surgery, patients were assigned either to the microscopic thyroidectomy group (MT group), with the use of the surgical microscope, or the traditional thyroidectomy group (TT group), without the use of visual magnification. Outcome measures were operative time, intraoperative bleeding and complication rates including injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) or the parathyroid glands. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The use of total thyroidectomy in thyroid cancer treatment is not unanimous, and it is even more controversial when this procedure is advocated for benign diseases. On the other hand, the complication risk may have an increase up to 20 times in repeat operations for recurrence. The objective of the study was to evaluate the use of total thyroidectomy in benign diseases, multinodular goiter, and Graves disease to justify the authors' preference.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of use of total thyroidectomy in benign diseases.
