The risk of tick bite and Lyme borreliosis in a forested area in England with public access was studied over a two-year period. Tick infestation levels were high with more than 1000 members of the public reporting for tick removal at a local clinic. Most of the attached ticks were nymphs (82%) and distinct differences in anatomical sites of attachment were observed in children and adults. Children sustained nymphal bites to the head, neck and axilla region much more frequently than adults (48 vs. 10%), whereas adults were bitten on the lower legs more frequently than children (46 vs. 9%). BACKGROUND: African tick-bite fever is caused by R. africae. All cases reported to date in France have occurred among patients who came from southern Africa, the endemic zone. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of a patient infected in France.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old white man who had never left France developed fever and 3 "black spots" on the legs with lymphangitis and enlarged nodes. The clinically suspected diagnosis was confirmed by positive serology reactions to R. africae. As cross immunity with R. conorii can occur, the diagnosis was further confirmed by western blot for R

A tick which bit the glans penis of a 40-year-old Japanese man was surgically excised together with the skin where the bite occurred. It was identified as Amblyomma testudinarium through the taxonomical investigation of its morphological characteristics. To our best knowledge, our patient is the sixth tick bite from this species of tick recorded in the Chugoku District of Japan.

Tick bite fever (Rickettsia conorii) is a disease which occurs commonly in South Africa. Clinical illness in the black African patient is however rare, despite high seroprevalence rates of antibodies against R. conorii reported from other areas of Southern Africa. We present two case reports of clinically apparent tick bite fever occurring in black South Africans, the first to be documented in sub-Saharan Africa, and examine possible explanations for the marked discrepancy between clinical illness and seroprevalence rates.

Ixodes ricinus can transmit several microorganisms, out of which Borrelia burgdorferi and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus are the most important pathogens in humans. A lemon eucalyptus extract (Citriodiol) has been shown to be a natural repellent against mosquitoes, stable flies, and midges. We have investigated whether the use of the extract would reduce the number of attached I. ricinus ticks in humans. A volunteer sample of 111 individuals was recruited among healthy, outdoor active adults living in two highly I. ricinus-infested areas. They were randomly divided into two groups: one gr

Dermacentor reticulatus ticks are sporadically removed from human skin and therefore the medical consequences of their feeding are neglected compared to Ixodes ricinus. We investigated the prevalence of pathogens in D. reticulatus removed from human skin and possible clinical manifestations suggestive of tick-borne diseases after a tick bite. A total of 2153 ticks were studied and of these only 34 were D. reticulatus. The mean prevalence of Rickettsia in D. reticulatus was 50.0% and R. raoultii was identified in 82.4% of infected D. reticulatus ticks. We confirmed the first case of R. aeschlim

To explore the potential role of Ixodes ricinus as the presumed vector of Bartonella henselae in eastern Poland, ticks collected in various geographic locations were examined for the presence of B. henselae, and the results were matched against the prevalence of anti-B. henselae antibodies in individuals occupationally exposed to tick bites. The presence of Bartonella DNA was investigated by PCR in a total of 1,603 unfed Ixodes ricinus ticks. The presence of IgG antibodies against B. henselae was investigated in serum samples from 332 people occupationally exposed to tick bites (94 farmers and

BACKGROUND: The risk of developing Lyme borreliosis (LB) following a tick bite is influenced by several independent factors, including the promptness of tick removal, host immune response, and regional variability in pathogen prevalence. This study employed a citizen science approach to investigate the incidence of LB following Ixodes ricinus bites in Poland and to assess the relationship between Borrelia spirochete load, tick attachment duration, and subsequent LB development in humans.
METHODS: The study was conducted over 2 years (2021-2022). Participants were instructed to submit removed

Little is known about the immunomodulation by tick saliva during a natural tick bite in human skin, the site of the tick-host interaction. We examined the expression of chemokines, cytokines and leucocyte markers on the mRNA levels and histopathologic changes in human skin biopsies of tick bites (n=37) compared to unaffected skin (n=9). Early tick-bite skin lesions (<24 hours of tick attachment) were characterized by a predominance of macrophages and dendritic cells, elevated mRNA levels of macrophage chemoattractants (CCL2, CCL3, CCL4) and neutrophil chemoattractants (CXCL1, CXCL8), of the pr

INTRODUCTION: Tick bites, which may lead to Lyme disease, often prompt patients to consult their primary care physicians (PCPs). The aim of the present study was to assess how and how often PCPs in the Franche-Comté region of France manage tick bites.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Standardized questionnaires were sent to a random sample of 400 PCPs in the Franche-Comté region, requesting their voluntary and anonymous participation. The questionnaires collected socio-demographic details and practice-related information about tick-bite prophylaxis, Lyme serology, and tick-borne encephalitis vaccination

Tick-induced mammalian meat allergy has become an emergent allergy world-wide after van Nunen et al. first described the association between tick bites and the development of mammalian meat allergy in 2007. Cases of mammalian meat allergy have now been reported on all 6 continents where humans are bitten by ticks, in 17 countries - Australia, United States of America (USA), Europe (France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, United Kingdom, Italy, and Norway), Asia (Korea and Japan), Central America (Panama), South America (Brazil), and Africa (South Africa and Ivory Coast). To date,

Ixodes ticks are important vectors in the transmission of human disease. In endemic areas, infection with multiple tick-borne diseases may occur. In part 3 of this review, identification and management of coinfection with multiple pathogens is discussed. Methods of tick-bite prevention and tick removal also are discussed.

Consistent and effective use of personal prevention methods for tickborne diseases, including Lyme disease (LD), is dependent on risk awareness. To improve our understanding of the general U.S. population's experiences with tick exposure and use of personal prevention methods, we used data from ConsumerStyles, a web-based, nationally representative questionnaire on health-related topics. Questions addressed tick bites and LD diagnosis in the last year, use of personal prevention methods to prevent tick bites, and willingness to receive a theoretical LD vaccine. Of 10,551 participants surveyed

The primary features of the alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) are (i) The IgE ab that are causally related to anaphylaxis with infusions of Cetuximab are specific for galactose alpha-1,3-galactose. (ii) In the USA, this IgE ab is induced by bites of the tick Amblyomma americanum. (iii) The anaphylactic reactions to food derived from non-primate mammals are delayed in onset by three to five hours. A further important fact is that all humans make a "natural" response to alpha-gal which includes IgM, IgG, and IgA, but not IgE. The clinical features of AGS are recognized in many parts of the world, but dif
