The Role of Microbial Mats in the Biostabilization of Sediment Through Trapping and Binding.

Layered microbial communities, called microbial mats, commonly form in the intertidal or shallow subtidal zone, particularly in areas protected from wave action and strong currents. These microbial mats can accrete by growing around sand-sized detrital mineral grains in a two-step process known as trapping and binding. We hypothesized that trapping and binding by microbial mats can promote the stabilization of sand-sized sediment and is therefore a process that should be considered as an important mode of biostabilization for sandy coastlines threatened by sea-level rise and increased storm in

Commercial cuttlefish exposed to noise from offshore windmill construction show short-range acoustic trauma.

The installation of marine renewable energy devices (MREDs, wind turbines and converters of wave, tidal and ocean thermal energy) has increased quickly in the last decade. There is a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of MREDs on benthic invertebrates that live in contact with the seabed. The European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fisheries. A project to build an offshore wind farm in the French bay of Saint-Brieuc, near the English Channel, raised concern ab

Management of primary blast lung injury: a comparison of airway pressure release versus low tidal volume ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Primary blast lung injury (PBLI) presents as a syndrome of respiratory distress and haemoptysis resulting from explosive shock wave exposure and is a frequent cause of mortality and morbidity in both military conflicts and terrorist attacks. The optimal mode of mechanical ventilation for managing PBLI is not currently known, and clinical trials in humans are impossible due to the sporadic and violent nature of the disease. METHODS: A high-fidelity multi-organ computational simulator of PBLI pathophysiology was configured to replicate data from 14 PBLI casualties from the conflict

Functional connectivity in raphé-pontomedullary circuits supports active suppression of breathing during hypocapnic apnea.

Hyperventilation is a common feature of disordered breathing. Apnea ensues if CO2 drive is sufficiently reduced. We tested the hypothesis that medullary raphé, ventral respiratory column (VRC), and pontine neurons have functional connectivity and persistent or evoked activities appropriate for roles in the suppression of drive and rhythm during hyperventilation and apnea. Phrenic nerve activity, arterial blood pressure, end-tidal CO2, and other parameters were monitored in 10 decerebrate, vagotomized, neuromuscularly-blocked, and artificially ventilated cats. Multielectrode arrays recorded spi

The effects of pressure control versus volume control assisted ventilation on patient work of breathing in acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patient work of breathing (WOB) during assisted ventilation is reduced when inspiratory flow (V(I)) from the ventilator exceeds patient flow demand. Patients in acute respiratory failure often have unstable breathing patterns and their requirements for V(I) may change from breath to breath. Volume control ventilation (VCV) traditionally incorporates a pre-set ventilator V(I) that remains constant even under conditions of changing patient flow demand. In contrast, pressure control ventilation (PCV) incorporates a variable decelerating flow wave form with a high ventilator V(I) as in

Nightmare after trauma as paradigm for all dreams: a new approach to the nature and functions of dreaming.

Nightmares, far from being unsuccessful dreams or exceptions to rules about dreams, can be considered paradigms for all dreaming. They allow us to follow exactly how a disturbance or perturbation is handled by the processing systems in our minds. The data considered here consists of dream series in the weeks and months immediately following trauma in adults--in other words, nightmares and dreams occurring as the trauma resolves. It appears the traumatized person may dream first about the actual trauma (though not always), then, very quickly, the dreams appear to deal with the dominant emotion.

High frequency jet ventilation: use of the Bain system for entrainment.

The use of a Bain system to convey anaesthetic gases for entrainment during high frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) was evaluated by examining the effect of varying the fresh gas flow (Vf) on the end-tidal carbon dioxide (PECO2) in 46 ASA physical status I and II patients undergoing extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Anaesthesia was induced with methohexitone (1-2 mg.kg-1), fentanyl (1-1.5 micrograms.kg-1) and vecuronium (0.1 mg.kg-1). After endotracheal intubation with a Mallinckrodt Hi-Lo Jet cuffed endotracheal tube, the patient was immersed in a water bath and HFJV at 150 breaths

Cardiac responses in Crassostrea gasar: An experimental approach of how the tidal cycle influences the heart function of the mangrove oyster.

Cardiac physiological studies in oysters are scarce and these kinds of responses can be key issues for understanding behavioral and baseline adaptive responses. In this study we characterized the electrocardiogram (ECG) tracing patterns, wave intervals (RR; QT), and complex duration (QRS) of Crassostrea gasar during immersion followed by air exposure, simulating what occurs in a tide cycle. Initially, the ECG was analyzed in the oysters under immersion for 30 min to evaluate the basal recordings (immersion exposure condition). Then, the same animals were removed from the water and the ECG was

Multidimensional Transport Experiment and Simulation of Chloride Ions in Concrete Subject to Simulated Dry and Wet Cycles in a Marine Environment.

Chloride ion erosion is an important factor affecting the durability of marine engineering concrete. In particular, concrete structures in wave splash and tidal zones are subjected to dry and wet cycles and multidimensional diffusion of chloride ions. To investigate the intricate diffusion of chloride ions within concrete under these dynamic conditions, we devised a comprehensive experiment. This experiment encompasses multiple dimensions, involving dry and wet cycles, as well as static immersion. The experiment intends to reveal how chloride ions are distributed in the concrete and clarify th

AIDS is your business.

If your company operates in a developing country, AIDS is your business. While Africa has received the most attention, AIDS is also spreading swiftly in other parts of the world. Russia and Ukraine had the fastest-growing epidemics last year, and many experts believe China and India will suffer the next tidal wave of infection. Why should executives be concerned about AIDS? Because it is destroying the twin rationales of globalization strategy-cheap labor and fast-growing markets--in countries where people are heavily affected by the epidemic. Fortunately, investments in programs that prevent

Cerebrovascular pulsatility index is higher in chronic kidney disease.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are more likely to die of cardiovascular diseases, including cerebrovascular disease, than to progress to end-stage kidney disease. Cerebrovascular dysfunction, characterized by reduced cerebrovascular reactivity, cerebral hypoperfusion, and increased pulsatile flow within the brain, precedes the onset of dementia and is linked to cognitive dysfunction. However, whether impaired cerebrovascular function is present in non-dialysis dependent CKD is largely unknown. Using transcranial Doppler, we compared middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood velocity respo

Successful management of immunotherapy-resistant respiratory failure in anti-mitochondrial M2 antibody-positive myositis by modified lung volume recruitment therapy: A case report.

RATIONALE: Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) M2-positive myositis can lead to severe respiratory failure. Traditional immunotherapies sometimes fail to address respiratory failure. Herein, this CARE-compliant case report described a patient with AMA-M2-positive myositis who recovered from ventilation with tracheostomy owing to immunotherapy-resistant respiratory failure to spontaneous breathing after modified lung volume recruitment (mLVR) therapy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old man experienced general fatigue and shortness of breath. The patient had a notable degree of proximal muscle wea

Brain Activation by H1 Antihistamines Challenges Conventional View of Their Mechanism of Action in Motion Sickness: A Behavioral, c-Fos and Physiological Study in Suncus murinus (House Musk Shrew).

Motion sickness occurs under a variety of circumstances and is common in the general population. It is usually associated with changes in gastric motility, and hypothermia, which are argued to be surrogate markers for nausea; there are also reports that respiratory function is affected. As laboratory rodents are incapable of vomiting, Suncus murinus was used to model motion sickness and to investigate changes in gastric myoelectric activity (GMA) and temperature homeostasis using radiotelemetry, whilst also simultaneously investigating changes in respiratory function using whole body plethysmo

Buried Alive: The Behavioural Response of the Mussels, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis to Sudden Burial by Sediment.

Sedimentation in the sea occurs through natural processes, such as wave and tidal action, which can be exacerbated during storms and floods. Changes in terrestrial land use, marine aggregate extraction, dredging, drilling and mining are known to result in substantial sediment deposition. Research suggests that deposition will also occur due to the modern development of marine renewable energy. The response to individual burial under three depths of sediment, three sediment fractions and five burial durations was investigated in two mussel species, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis in specia

Resistance exercise with combined Valsalva manoeuvre acutely increases carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity in healthy untrained individuals.

PURPOSE: The Valsalva manoeuvre (VM) may contribute to the observed increase in pulse wave velocity (PWV) following resistance exercise (RE). However, VM use during RE is rarely reported or discussed in the literature. We compared the acute carotid-femoral PWV response before and following RE with paced breathing, RE with a VM (REVM) and the VM alone. METHODS: 15 healthy RE-untrained participants (female = 8) (mean ± SD: age, 24 ± 5 years; height, 171.7 ± 10.9 cm; body mass 69.6 ± 14.5 kg) completed in a randomised order (1) RE: 3 sets of 10 repetitions of 4 RE exercises at 60% of 1RM with pa

Ultraprotective ventilation allowed by extracorporeal CO2 removal improves the right ventricular function in acute respiratory distress syndrome patients: a quasi-experimental pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) failure is a common complication in moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). RV failure is exacerbated by hypercapnic acidosis and overdistension induced by mechanical ventilation. Veno-venous extracorporeal CO2 removal (ECCO2R) might allow ultraprotective ventilation with lower tidal volume (VT) and plateau pressure (Pplat). This study investigated whether ECCO2R therapy could affect RV function. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental prospective observational pilot study performed in a French medical ICU. Patients with moderate-to-sev

Distribution and Variation Characteristics of Branched Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers (BrGDGTs) in Sediment Cores Along the Nearshore-to-Offshore Gradient of the East China Sea and Their Correlation with Microbial Community Diversity.

Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are promising molecular biomarkers widely applied in paleoenvironmental reconstructions, including temperature and pH. However, knowledge of the microorganisms responsible for brGDGT production in marine environments remains limited, which constrains the further development and application of brGDGT-based proxies for reconstructing past marine conditions. In this study, both 'living' intact polar lipid-derived brGDGTs (IPL-brGDGTs) and 'fossil' core brGDGTs (CL-brGDGTs), together with bacterial community compositions, were analysed in mu
