Additional evidence of tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) as intermediate hosts for Toxoplasma gondii through the isolation of viable strains.

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common zoonotic diseases in the world. Felines excrete Toxoplasma gondii oocysts, which play a key role in the transmission of this protozoon. Pathological diagnoses were performed on four carcasses of captive tigers collected from 2019 to 2021 in China, and T. gondii was surveyed using serology, molecular analysis, and aetiology. Striated muscle samples of the tigers (n = 4) were bioassayed in mice. DNA derived from T. gondii tachyzoites was isolated and characterized using PCR-RFLP. The pathological diagnoses revealed that ageing, declined immune function, li

Occurrence and Risk Factors of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Tigers (Panthera tigris) in Thailand: Influence of Age and Sex.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan parasite of significant concern in both public and animal health. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the occurrence of T. gondii in 135 captive tigers (Panthera tigris) across seven tiger parks in Thailand. Tiger parks, as theme-based wildlife attractions, are high-risk venues for zoonotic disease transmission due to the close contact between humans and captive wild animals. METHODS: The presence of T. gondii specific antibodies was determined using a latex agglutination test. RESULTS: Serological analysis revealed that 42.96% (58/135;

Direct evidence of an extra-intestinal cycle of Toxoplasma gondii in tigers (Panthera tigris) by isolation of viable strains.

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common zoonotic diseases in the world. Felines excrete environmentally resistant Toxoplasma gondii oocysts. However, there is no direct evidence to prove tigers are the intermediate host of T. gondii. Here, we show that, IgG antibodies to T. gondii in 80% (8/10) of captive tigers. Two viable T. gondii strains (ToxoDB genotype #9) were isolated by bioassay in mice using striated muscles of two tigers (Tiger#3 and Tiger#8). Additionally, mice were confirmed as T. gondii-positive by bioassay of feces #89-110, but no viable T. gondii strain was isolated successfull

Physiological and biochemical variables in captive tigers (Panthera tigris) immobilised with dexmedetomidine and ketamine or dexmedetomidine, midazolam and ketamine.

Physiological and biochemical variables in captive tigers (Panthera tigris) immobilised with dexmedetomidine and ketamine or dexmedetomidine, midazolam and ketamine were evaluated. Thirty tigers received either dexmedetomidine (0.025 mg/kg) and ketamine (3 mg/kg) (group DK) or dexmedetomidine (0.0125 mg/kg), midazolam (0.1 mg/kg) and ketamine (3 mg/kg) (group DMK). Heart rate, SPO2 and blood pressure were measured at five-minute intervals. Arterial pH, PO2, PCO2, glucose, K+ and arterial and venous lactate were measured at 15 and 45 minutes after immobilisation. A generalised linear mixed mode

Phylogenomics and museomics reveal five distinct species of tiger cats in South America.

The evolutionary history of elusive organisms can be characterized through genomic analyses, which have the power to reveal previously unknown taxa even in groups assumed to be well studied, such as cats. We have analyzed complete genomes of 38 individuals from the Neotropical cat genus Leopardus, including 26 individuals representing multiple evolutionary units of the contentious tiger cat (Leopardus tigrinus) species complex. Eight genomes were generated from museum specimens, which allowed the first genetic assessment of the type locality for L. tigrinus in the Guiana Shield. We found that

Trial of food allergy IgE tests for Eczema Relief (TIGER): study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy may contribute to eczema, but there is variability in the use of tests to investigate this, and uncertainty about possible benefits or harms. The objective is to determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of test-guided dietary advice compared with standard care for eczema management. METHODS: This is a pragmatic, multicentre, parallel group, individually randomized controlled trial with internal pilot and nested genetic substudy and economic and process evaluations. Children (aged 3 months to <2 years) were recruited via general practitioner surgeries in England a

Muscle Characteristics and Transcriptomic Analysis of Diploid and Triploid Tiger Pufferfish (Takifugu rubripes).

Sexual maturity in tiger pufferfish (Takifugu rubripes) consumes substantial metabolic energy, constraining somatic growth and limiting meat yield. Artificial triploid induction (sterility) may redirect energy toward somatic growth. Cold-shock induced triploids were compared with diploid controls using muscle and liver tissues, and the phenotype, histology, nutritional composition, hormone levels, as well as transcriptome profiles were assessed. After 5 months, triploids attained significantly greater body length and body weight, with larger muscle fiber diameter but lower fiber density. The t

Cutaneous Amelanotic Signet-Ring Melanoma in a Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

A 15-year-old male white Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) was evaluated for an elevated, ulcerated, cutaneous mass on the right flank. The mass was removed by excisional biopsy and submitted for histopathology. Based on distinct histological features of intracytoplasmic globular material and positive immunohistochemical staining for Melan-A and vimentin, an amelanotic signet-ring melanoma was diagnosed. While in domestic cats this neoplasm is associated with malignancy and a short survival time, the tiger had no local recurrence or related clinical disease approximately 4 years post su

Food safety of the green tiger shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus from the Persian Gulf.

Seafood is a rich source of essential compounds for human health, but the consumption of aquatic products that are exposed to environmental pollutants, especially trace metals, comes with risk. Therefore, in this study, the levels of nickel, zinc, and lead in the muscle of shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus caught from the north of the Persian Gulf as a polluted environment were measured, and the health risks were assessed. The results showed that the level of Zn (300.88 ± 2.76 µg/g) in the muscle of shrimp was higher than Ni (6.82 ± 0.10) and Pb (1.10 ± 0.09 µg/g), and the amount of accumulation of

Taming of the Tiger: A Novel Technique to Deal With Mitral Annular Calcification -A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve surgery can be challenging for patients with mitral annular calcification (MAC). The prevalence of MAC in patients who undergo mitral valve replacement is 19.9%. The  treatment options for MAC include complete decalcification and annular reconstruction with valve repair/replacement or performing a surgical valve repair or replacement without decalcification, accepting the risk of paravalvular leak. We describe three cases of mitral valve prolapse with posterior annular calcification, which were repaired using a unique technique that does not require decalcification. C

Tetrodotoxin functions as a stress relieving substance in juvenile tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes.

We tested whether tetrodotoxin (TTX) functions as a stress relieving substance in puffer fish. We orally administered TTX to the juveniles of hatchery-reared non-toxic tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes and measured the effects of TTX on brain corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA expression and plasma cortisol levels in comparison with effects in non-toxic juveniles. Firstly, the reciprocal connections of CRH and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were confirmed by dual-label immunohistochemistry. CRH-immunoreactive (ir) cell bodies were detected in the hypothalamus and CRH-ir fibers were ob

Population Explosions of Tiger Moth Lead to Lepidopterism Mimicking Infectious Fever Outbreaks.

Lepidopterism is a disease caused by the urticating scales and toxic fluids of adult moths, butterflies or its caterpillars. The resulting cutaneous eruptions and systemic problems progress to clinical complications sometimes leading to death. High incidence of fever epidemics were associated with massive outbreaks of tiger moth Asota caricae adult populations during monsoon in Kerala, India. A significant number of monsoon related fever characteristic to lepidopterism was erroneously treated as infectious fevers due to lookalike symptoms. To diagnose tiger moth lepidopterism, we conducted imm

Mastocytemia associated with a visceral mast cell tumor in a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris).

A 6-yr-old male Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris) with no significant past clinical history was anesthetized for clinical examination after 5 days of lethargy. Clinically, the animal presented with anorexia, pale mucous membranes, and icterus. Hematologic results indicated moderate anemia and severe thrombocytopenia and showed a circulating population of atypical mast cells. The tiger died during anesthesia. On postmortem examination, abdominal hemorrhage associated with marked diffuse hepato-splenomegaly and mesenteric, hepatic, and splenic lymph node hypertrophy were observed. A visceral mast

Effectiveness of a multiple intervention strategy for the control of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Spain.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of four complementary and combined strategies to minimize the presence of the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus, firmly established in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Catalonia, Spain. A quasi-experimental design including six neighbourhoods was performed in 2008-2009. The abundance of mosquitoes was monitored through ovitraps. The multiple intervention strategy consisted of four actions: source reduction; larvicide treatments (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and diflubenzuron); adulticide treatments (alfacipermetrin); and cleaning up uncontro

Sixteen years of severe Tiger snake (Notechis) envenoming in Perth, Western Australia.

We aimed to describe the characteristics, clinical course, management and outcome of patients presenting to Perth teaching hospitals after envenoming by Tiger snakes. We undertook a chart review from six Perth teaching hospitals over a 16 year period from 1990 to 2005. Data were collected by a trained investigator using a preformatted data abstraction tool. We included patients bitten in the appropriate geographical area, with defibrination coagulopathy and positive Venom Detection Kit result for Tiger snake or response to specific antivenom. Of 381 charts reviewed, 23 patients were envenomed

Klinefelter syndrome (39 XXY) in an adult Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

Fibroblast cultures of a skin biopsy from an adult intact male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) revealed an abnormal standard and G-banded karyotype diploid chromosome number of 2n = 39 XXY due to an extra sex chromosome as opposed to the expected 2n = 38 XY. The tiger was euthanatized 1 yr later due to acute multifocal intervertebral disc disease. Histopathology of the reproductive tract demonstrated a paucity of seminiferous tubules and these were devoid of spermatagonia. An increase in fibrous connective tissue was noted in sections of the prostate and epididymis, and expansion of t

A unique case of extrapulmonary sarcoidosis on F18 FDG PET/CT: "Tiger man".

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease in which muscle involvement is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation. We present the case of a 34-year-old man with shortness of breath lasting for three months.  Computerized tomography showed intrathoracic lymph nodes and perihilar consolidations in both lungs. She received treatment for pneumonia, but because of insufficient regression, she was referred to our hospital's chest diseases department for further examination. Laboratory results showed an elevated calcium. We conducted an F-18 FDG PET CT scan because the clinicians suspected cancer. P
