Association Between Exposure to LGBTQ-Targeted Tobacco Marketing and Tobacco Use Behaviors Among US Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: A risk factor for tobacco use among sexual and gender minority people is exposure to tobacco marketing. This study aimed to assess exposure to tobacco marketing by sexual and gender identity via general venues (e.g., bars/clubs, newspapers/magazines), determine the frequency of targeted marketing via LGBTQ venues, and examine how exposure to tobacco marketing in LGBTQ venues relates to tobacco use among sexual and gender minority young adults. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of US young adults (ages 18-30 years) between July and August 2023. We estimated exposure to tobacco

Young Adults' Exposure to and Engagement With Tobacco-Related Social Media Content and Subsequent Tobacco Use.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine/tobacco social media content may increase young people's risk for use. This study examined prospective associations between exposure to and engagement with nicotine/tobacco-related social media content and nicotine/tobacco use among young adults. AIMS AND METHODS: Young adults (N = 2080) originally recruited from Southern California high schools for a prospective cohort study reported frequency of viewing and posting nicotine/tobacco content on four social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube). Participants also reported frequency of seeing nicotin

Longitudinal associations between flavored tobacco use and tobacco product cessation in a national sample of adults.

Use of flavored tobacco has been associated with lower likelihood of short-term abstinence from tobacco. It is unknown whether longer-term associations exist, particularly for a variety of products and specific flavor categories. This study used adult survey data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2013-2018). We tested associations of past 30-day tobacco product use at wave 2 using both a 2-category any flavor versus unflavored variable and 4-category specific flavor (menthol/mint, sweet, and both menthol/mint and sweet) versus unflavored variable with past 12-m

Current tobacco use among adults in the United States: findings from the National Adult Tobacco Survey.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of tobacco use among US adults. METHODS: We used data from the 2009-2010 National Adult Tobacco Survey, a national landline and cell phone survey of adults aged 18 years and older, to estimate current use of any tobacco; cigarettes; cigars, cigarillos, or small cigars; chewing tobacco, snuff, or dip; water pipes; snus; and pipes. We stratified estimates by gender, age, race/ethnicity, education, income, sexual orientation, and US state. RESULTS: National prevalence of current use was 25.2% for any tobacco; 19.5% for cigar

Tobacco usage in the home: a cross-sectional analysis of heated tobacco product (HTP) use and combustible tobacco smoking in Japan, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Heated tobacco product (HTP) use continues in Japan as the second most common product after cigarettes. While the health effects of HTPs and their secondhand emissions are not well-studied, the tobacco industry has actively marketed HTPs as a smokeless, health-conscious alternative to cigarettes to encourage home consumption. We investigated the prevalence of current tobacco product use and usage at home. METHODS: The present study conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2023 wave of a nationwide, Internet-based, self-reported survey. 29,354 individuals aged 16-74 we

Prevalence of Tobacco and Poly-Tobacco Use as a Function of Sexual Orientation Identity and Sex.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research has characterized poly-tobacco use (ie, use of at least two nicotine/tobacco products) among adults with sexual minoritized (SM) identities (ie, lesbian, gay, and bisexual). Additional work is needed to examine disparities in use by sexual orientation identity and determine whether these disparities differ by sex. We aimed to examine the prevalence of tobacco product use and poly-tobacco use by sexual orientation identity and sex among a nationally representative sample of US adults. AIMS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from 32 352 adult respondents (34.9% 18-24 ye

Prevalence and predictors of tobacco use among Saudi adolescents: the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2022.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to acquiring new behaviors, including tobacco use, especially in familiar and social gatherings and celebrations where they witness certain behaviors like waterpipe use. Saudi Arabia enhances preventive and therapeutic healthcare services. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of tobacco use and identify its predictors among adolescents aged 13-15 years in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Data were collected from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, which was conducted in Saudi Arabia in 2022. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of tobacco use among S

Tobacco Product Use Among Middle and High School Students - National Youth Tobacco Survey, United States, 2024.

Use of tobacco products in any form is unsafe, and nearly all tobacco product use begins during adolescence. CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analyzed data from the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey to determine tobacco product use among U.S. middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students. In 2024, current (previous 30-day) use of any tobacco product was reported by 10.1% of high school students (representing 1.58 million students) and 5.4% of middle school students (representing 640,000 students). Among all students, e-cigarettes were the most commonly report

Parental Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice on Tobacco Use, Smoking Cessation, and Children's Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure.

Background: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure in children ranks one of the major public health problems in our time. Poor parental knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) on ETS often contribute to worse exposure of the kids. Thus, we aimed to document parental KAP regarding tobacco use, smoking cessation and children's ETS exposure, and to analyse how knowledge and attitude relate to practice. Methods: Self-administered KAP questionnaires were distributed to smoking parents recruited from the pediatric unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital, which provides pediatric service to a popula

Tobacco use and cancer-related symptom burden: Analysis of the US Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between tobacco use and symptom burden may inform tobacco treatment interventions tailored to the needs of individuals with cancer. METHODS: The study included 1409 adult cancer survivors from Wave 5 of the US Food and Drug Administration Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. A multivariate analysis of variance controlling for age, sex, and race/ethnicity assessed the association of cigarette smoking and vaping on cancer-related symptom burden (fatigue, pain, emotional problems) and quality of life (QoL). Generalized linear mixed

The Relationship Between Receptivity, Targeted Beliefs, and Tobacco Use.

Population-level tobacco prevention education campaigns influence a range of public health behaviors. Campaign receptivity is a precursor to shifts in campaign-targeted beliefs. This study examined the bi-directional nature of campaign receptivity and campaign-targeted beliefs (i.e. anti-industry, social movement, independence). Further, this study explored the relationship between campaign-targeted beliefs and campaign-targeted outcomes (i.e. tobacco behavior and intentions not to use). Data were drawn from the Truth Longitudinal Cohort, a nationally representative, probability-based cohort w

Adversities Mediate Social Determinants of Youth Tobacco Use Initiation.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) significantly influence health behaviors, including tobacco use among youth. Adversities such as perceived discrimination, perceived neighborhood stress, life trauma, and financial strain are stressors that may mediate the relationship between various SDOH and youth tobacco use. This study aims to investigate whether multidimensional adversities mediate the effects of SDOH on tobacco use among youth. METHODS: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study were used to test our hypotheses. The sample included a diverse cohort

Tobacco Use in Adolescents With Disabilities: A Literature Review.

The use of tobacco products by adolescents has greatly increased in recent years. Adolescents with disabilities have demonstrated higher instances of e-cigarette and tobacco use in relation to their peers without disabilities. Repercussions for e-cigarette and tobacco use increase negative physical and health implications and financial which ultimately will further the gap for individuals with disabilities over time. It is argued that adolescents with disabilities are more susceptible to begin using tobacco and remain using tobacco which can lead to further use of addictive substances. In this

Tobacco and alcohol use among adolescents in Northern India.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and cigarette usage are major public health issues that particularly affect young people worldwide. Because most users begin using these drugs well before the age of 18, there are significant psychosocial and health consequences. This study seeks to identify the incidence of underage drinking and smoking in northern India and the multiple risk factors associated with this exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on adolescents (13-18 years) from Northern India, to assess their knowledge, attitude, and practice of usage of alcohol and tobacco.
