[Intraosseous epidermoid cysts of the toe phalanx in dogs].

Out of 1057 amputated canine toes with tumours, tumour-like or other lesions, 17 cases were histopathologically diagnosed as epidermoid cysts of the terminal phalanx (EP). They were accompanied by osteolysis, reactive bone formation and chronic inflammation of phalanx 3. Extension of reactive changes to the phalangeal joint and phalanx 2 was less frequent. Various breeds were involved. There was no breed predisposition. The average age was 10.8 years; the male-female ratio 2.4:1. Nine EP were located on the forelimbs, 4 on the hindlimbs. In 4 cases location was unknown. Toes 4 and 5 were most

Should the amputations of the great toe be replanted?

Seventeen great toes, amputated at the distal phalangeal to the level of the MTP joint, were replanted between 1990 and 1998, at Izmir Hand and Microsurgery Hospital. Replantation in five out of six complete amputations, and seven out of eleven incomplete amputations were successful, and the overall survival rate was 76.4%. In failed replantations, the base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe was preserved during closing of the stump. Nine of 17 patients were available for review in the follow-up period of mean 3.5 years (range 1-6.5 years). Clinical and biomechanical evaluations of the o

Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound for Symptomatic Pseudarthrosis After Toe Fracture with Symphalangism: A Report of 2 Cases.

CASE: Distal phalangeal fractures are often treated conservatively. However, some patients experience residual pain. We report 2 cases of patients who underwent low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy for pseudarthrosis after fracture of the distal phalanx of the fifth toe with symphalangism. Both patients (female, 63 and 33-year-old, respectively) underwent conservative treatment with buddy-taping fixation; however, bone union failed, and LIPUS therapy was initiated. In both cases, bone union was achieved and pain resolved after 3 months. CONCLUSION: Bone union occasionally fails aft

Subungual osteochondroma: a diagnostic dilemma.

Osteochondroma is the most common skeletal neoplasm of all benign bone tumors. However, it rarely occurs subungually. In this location, the lesion may penetrate the skin, causing nail deformity, and can easily be misdiagnosed. We report two cases of subungual osteochondroma of the distal phalanges of the first toes with cutaneous penetration and discuss the clinical, histologic, and radiographic features and the treatment options.

Digital fractures. A comprehensive review.

Fractures of the phalanges of the feet are the most common types of injury to the forefoot. There is, however, little available literature concerning pedal digital fractures. There is a misconception that fractured toes will heal by themselves. In fact, mistreated digital fractures can lead to many painful and serious complications. A review of the classifications, mechanisms of injury, clinical presentation, complications, and various treatments of digital fractures is presented.

Chilblains and microgeodic disease diagnosed concurrently in a child's toe.

Microgeodic disease, similar to chilblains (pernio), is characterized by painful, erythematous swelling, as well as small, punched-out erosions found in affected phalanges. Although they share a similar appearance and proposed pathogenesis, chilblains has rarely been diagnosed in children with microgeodic disease, and in those cases has not been confirmed on skin biopsy. This article details a child in Connecticut diagnosed during the winter with chilblains and microgeodic disease of his toe, as supported by biopsy and imaging. These findings further indicate that the two diseases are interrel

Digito-reno-cerebral syndrome: confirmation of Eronen syndrome.

In 1985, Eronen et al. described a new autosomal recessive syndrome with absence of the distal phalanges of the toes and fingers, renal defect and cerebral anomalies (dilated ventricles or seizures). Two unrelated children affected by this syndrome enable us to accept its autonomy and delineate its nosology. Variability of the expression of the renal and cerebral manifestations is emphasized.

Radiographic observations of pyknodysostosis. Report of a case.

A case of pyknodysostosis in a 32-year-old woman has been reported. The patient presented typical skeletal changes, separated cranial sutures, open fontanelles, partial aplasia of the terminal phalanges of the fingers and toes, and brachyphalanges. The oral findings included lesions resembling periapical cementoma, hypoplasia of the maxilla and mandible, crowding of teeth, and a median raphe.

Toe-to-hand transfer for traumatic digital amputations in children and adolescents.

In the period from July of 1990 to August of 1994, 45 toe or toe tissue transfers were performed in 28 children and adolescents with traumatic amputation of digits. The average age at the time of transfer was 12 years (range, 3 to 16 years), and the median age was 10 years. The methods of reconstruction included transfer of 6 trimmed great toes, 2 great toe pulps, 24 second toes, 1 vascularized metatarsophalangeal joint from the second toe, 2 third toes, 4 combined second and third toes. and 1 combined third and fourth toes. All of the transferred toes, except one second toe, ultimately surviv

Isolated lower limb medium-vessel vasculitis: a new entity?

A 47-year-old female was referred with bilateral ischaemic lesions affecting her toes with associated gangrene. Systemic examination was normal and her medical history was unremarkable. Close examination of the hands revealed splinter haemorrhages. Her feet were dusky in colour and the toes were dark and weeping, each becoming gangrenous, with erythema around the metatarsal phalangeal joint. Dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses were intact with strong Doppler signals. Investigations for surgical pathology and malignancy were all negative as were routine blood tests and tests for autoimmu

Salter Harris type II injury of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe: case report.

Fractures of the growth plate are unique to childhood. The risk of growth disturbances depends on the type of fracture, its location, the age of the patient, the vascularization to the epiphysis, the state of the surrounding soft tissues, and whether the injury is open or closed. Epiphyseal fractures of the foot are uncommon, and only rarely are the phalanges involved. We report a Salter-Harris type II injury in the fifth toe. The patient, a 3-year-old girl, was successfully managed conservatively with no sequelae.

Gillespie syndrome: additional findings and parental consanguinity.

Aniridia is a rare condition whose presence should alert clinicians to the possibility of other abnormalities. One of the differential diagnoses that should be considered is Gillespie syndrome, in which aniridia is associated with cerebellar ataxia and mental retardation. There are only 21 reported cases of Gillespie syndrome. The goal of this paper is to describe the clinical manifestations of a girl born to a consanguineous couple who presented with typical findings of the Gillespie syndrome, in addition to previously undescribed alterations of her distal extremities.

[Value of the radiographic criteria "fingers and toes" in the early diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis].

PURPOSE: To assess the value of Fournie's radiological criteria "fingers and toes" in the early diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 47 patients with psoriatic arthritis were studied retrospectively. Clinical and radiological features at the hands and fingers were assessed. Radiographic analysis was performed using Fournie's criteria. RESULTS: Of 47 patients studied, 25 patients developed hand and finger involvement. Asymmetrical joint distribution was observed in 76% of cases. Distal interphalangeal arthritis was noted in 60% of cases. Nail lesions were present in 11 cas

Brachydactyly type A3 is caused by a novel 13 bp HOXD13 frameshift deletion in a Chinese family.

Brachydactyly type A (BDA) is defined as short middle phalanges of the affected digits and is subdivided into four types (BDA1-4). To date, the molecular cause is unknown. However, there is some evidence that pathogenic variants of HOXD13 could be associated with BDA3 and BDA4. Here, we report a Chinese autosomal dominant BDA3 pedigree with a novel HOXD13 mutation. The affected individuals presented with an obviously shorter fifth middle phalanx. The radial side of the middle phalanx was shorter than the ulnar side, and the terminal phalanx of the fifth finger inclined radially and formed clas

Bony anomalies in a patient with reticulate acropigmentation of Kitamura.

Reticulate acropigmentation of Kitamura [RAPK] is a rare pigmentary genodermatosis. This is a case report of a 23-year-old Saudi female who started manifesting the disorder in the 2nd decade. The patient had bony abnormalities in the form of absence of terminal phalanges of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th toes. These bone anomalies are extremely rare, and the association has never been described before in the literature.

Reconstruction of the burned thumb.

The thumb accounts for 40 to 50% of hand function. Reconstruction of soft-tissue contractures include release and coverage with skin grafts or various local, regional, distant, or free flaps. Thumb length, so important for prehension and opposition, can be restored by phalangealization, pollicization, or toe-to-thumb transfer. Secondary techniques such as metacarpal distraction-lengthening or osteoplastic reconstruction are rarely indicated.

Variant of Coffin-Siris syndrome or previously undescribed syndrome?

We describe a 23-year-old woman with growth and mental retardation, hypoplasia of the nails and distal phalanges, particularly of the fifth fingers and toes, hirsutism, and a "coarse" face with large mouth and large tongue, and bushy eyebrows. Follow-up from birth to adulthood showed that developmental delay and hypoplasia of nails and distal phalanges are permanent signs. Sparse scalp hair, hypotonia, and feeding difficulties were present in early infancy. Later, growth retardation, hirsutism, and a "coarse" face with midface hypoplasia, broad nose, and large mouth became more impressive. Dif
