Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has transformed adult neuro-ophthalmology, but pediatric adoption has lagged because of perceived technical, financial, and practical barriers. This chapter provides a pragmatic framework for integrating OCT into pediatric and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology clinics, emphasizing how to obtain reliable images in awake children and how to interpret them. We first review technical aspects of tabletop and handheld OCT in children, including positioning, fixation strategies, and when to prioritize single-line macular or optic nerve head B-scans over full segmented p

Craniopharyngioma (CP) is a rare benign tumor of the sellar and suprasellar region that often compresses the optic pathways, causing significant visual impairment in both children and adults. The early detection and monitoring of optic nerve involvement are essential for preserving visual function. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) are noninvasive, high-resolution imaging modalities that provide quantitative assessment of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell complex (GCC), and retinal microvasculature. Thinning of the RNFL and GCC correlates wit

This review is devoted to the English- and Russian-language terminology of quantitative metrics that are used in the evaluation of images obtained by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). The paper presents an analysis of the use of terms characterizing intraretinal blood flow (vascular density, perfusion density, skeletonized density, etc.), area and shape of the foveal avascular zone, and choriocapillaris blood flow. The factors causing the heterogeneity of OCT-A terminology are described, including the lack of a unified international nomenclature for OCT-A, features of their Rus

BACKGROUND: Chronic ulcers, especially venous leg ulcers, are a major burden on the healthcare system. To date there are only few non-invasive established procedures for evaluation of blood perfusion in wounds. Dynamic optical coherence tomography (D-OCT) provides images of the skin's superficial vascularisation.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate if and how the D-OCT measurement of chronic wounds can provide new information about the vascularisation during the healing process.
METHODS: We examined 16 venous ulcers over 16 weeks and evaluated the vessel morphology and density using D

PURPOSE: To describe and illustrate the main optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings of infectious uveitis.
METHODS: Narrative review.
RESULTS: Posterior segment OCT in patients with infectious uveitis reveals posterior hyaloid face precipitates, superficial retinal precipitates and infiltrates, foveolitis, retinitis, neuro-retinitis, choroidal granulomas, and choroiditis as main imaging biomarkers. Some of these features are specific to the underlying causing etiology and may support the diagnosis and the initiation of treatment. Some OCT features disappear completely with resolution; s

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is a modern non invasive imaging technique that may aid in the evaluation of retinal diseases through the assessment of chorioretinal vasculature. The literature regarding OCT-A in sclerochoroidal calcification is scarce. We present the case of a 57-year-old female who was referred to the clinic due to an atypical choroidal lesion in the right eye. OCT-A showed an apparent decrease in the vascular flow of the choroidal/choriocapillaris layers and an apparent increase in the vascular flow of the deep retinal layers. A mass effect may be seen in O

Myocardial bridge (MB) is less commonly documented by angiography than autopsy. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be useful to detect angiographically undetectable MB. To investigate OCT characteristics of MB, 86 LAD vessels were imaged by OCT. MB was defined as presence of intermediate optical intensity, "fine" layer surrounding coronary artery by OCT. Frequency and characteristics of the angio-detectable and angio-undetectable but OCT-detectable MB were investigated. In a subset of patients with angio-detectable MB, cyclic changes in coronary arterial dimensions were analyzed. OCT detec

PURPOSE: The rapid and noninvasive nature of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) makes it a potentially valuable tool for imaging the retina in children. With the optimization of tabletop systems and the development of experimental handheld OCTA devices, there is expanded potential for OCTA in the clinic and the operating room. This article reviews the utility of OCTA in some of the most common pediatric retinal disorders.
METHODS: A thorough computerized PubMed search was performed to review relevant published journal articles to contextualize and identify the role of OCTA in com

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is a non-invasive imaging modality for assessing the vasculature within ocular structures including the retina, macula, choroid and optic nerve. OCT-A has a wide range of clinical applications in various optometric conditions which have been independently reported in the literature. This paper aims to present a review of the current literature on the clinical application of OCT-A in optometric practice as well as to analyse and evaluate the quality of the available evidence. This review included 78 articles from a literature search conducted on

Diabetic retinopathy is a common diabetes complication representing a heavy burden in terms of visual impairment and heath expenditure. Optical coherence tomography angiography is a relatively new imaging method and has proven to be a powerful tool in the analysis of diabetic retinopathy common features, including microaneurysms, intraretinal microvascular abnormalities, or neovascularization, as well as in research field, challenging the gold standard of fluorescein angiography. Many studies underlined the vascular impairment observed through optical coherence tomography angiography and its t

PURPOSE: To investigate the density of conjunctival blood vessels in normal eyes and in eyes with pinguecula or pterygium.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the conjunctival blood vessel density of 15 normal eyes, 15 pinguecula eyes, and 15 pterygium eyes of 43 healthy adults was assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography with an anterior segment lens adapter. The nasal surface of each eye (3 × 3 mm) was scanned 3 times to a depth of 800 μm. Conjunctival vessel density was defined as the percent of the scanned volume occupied by vessels in which blood flow was measured.
