Evaluation of the Computerized Assessment System for Psychotherapy Evaluation and Research (CASPER) interview with a psychiatric inpatient population.

The Computerized Assessment System for Psychotherapy Evaluation and Research (CASPER; Farrell & McCullough-Vaillant, 1996) includes a computer-based interview designed to assess functioning across a broad range of areas. The psychometric properties of scales derived from this interview were examined in a sample of 191 patients from the admissions wards of a state psychiatric hospital. Few participants had difficulty completing the computerized interview, and most rated their reactions to it positively. Item analyses and confirmatory factor analysis largely replicated the structure reported in

Behavior Change Techniques in Digital Health Interventions for Promoting Adolescent Health Behaviors: Systematic Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions (DHIs) using behavior change techniques (BCTs) show promise in addressing adolescent health behaviors, but evidence of their effectiveness across health behavior domains remains fragmented and poorly summarized. OBJECTIVE: This systematic umbrella review synthesized evidence from existing systematic reviews on the effectiveness of BCTs within DHI targeting key adolescent health behavior domains: alcohol consumption, tobacco use, physical activity, dietary habits, and obesity management. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, PsycInfo, Embase, and

The parietal lobe as a sensorimotor interface: a perspective from clinical and neuroimaging data.

Lesion studies show a wide range of sensorimotor functions that can be selectively disturbed in patients with parietal lobe damage. This is illustrated by the selective impairment of unimodal or polymodal sensorimotor transformations in patients with apraxia. These clinically apparent deficits of goal-directed motor behavior are complimented by more subtle sensorimotor transformation disorders such as mirror agnosia and ataxia that can only be disclosed by special tests. Imaging studies further exemplify the prominent role of the parietal cortex as a sensorimotor interface and provide new info

[Individual prevention of occupational contact dermatitis: protective gloves and skin protection recommendations as part of the patient management scheme by the public statutory employers' liability insurance].

The dermatologist's procedure is a pivotal tool for early recognition of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), for reporting OCD cases to the statutory accident insurance and for treating the diseases. The employer is in charge of implementing skin protection measures at the workplace. However, in terms of an individual prevention approach it may be necessary to propose targeted skin protection recommendations in specific patient cases. The patient's own skin protection behavior significantly contributes to regenerating and maintaining healthy skin. This behavior includes the use of occupatio

Feasibility of Real-Time Astronaut Eye-Tracking During Analog Extravehicular Activities.

INTRODUCTION: As lunar missions increase in frequency and duration, astronauts will conduct more extravehicular activities (EVAs) under demanding conditions that elevate workload, reduce situational awareness, and heighten the risk of operational errors. Despite extensive use in other high-risk fields, eye-tracking technology has not yet been applied to assess gaze behavior during EVAs. We evaluated the feasibility of using mobile eye-tracking within analog EVA suits, focusing on implementation, data quality, livestreaming capability, and the ability to compare gaze behavior across tasks and s

Use of tobacco during COVID-19: A qualitative study among medically underserved individuals.

The COVID-19 pandemic produced stress for people around the world. The perception that tobacco can be a coping tool for stress relief suggests that the conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic can provide insight into the relationship between stress and tobacco use patterns, particularly among those most at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. The goal was to identify the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tobacco use and preparedness for smoking cessation among individuals who smoke and are older and medically underserved. We conducted in-depth interviews with 39 patients to learn about individu

Considerations when using the activPAL monitor in field-based research with adult populations.

Research indicates that high levels of sedentary behavior (sitting or lying with low energy expenditure) are adversely associated with health. A key factor in improving our understanding of the impact of sedentary behavior (and patterns of sedentary time accumulation) on health is the use of objective measurement tools that collect date and time-stamped activity information. One such tool is the activPAL monitor. This thigh-worn device uses accelerometer-derived information about thigh position to determine the start and end of each period spent sitting/lying, standing, and stepping, as well a

The Standard for Clinicians' Interview in Psychiatry (SCIP): A Clinician-administered Tool with Categorical, Dimensional, and Numeric Output-Conceptual Development, Design, and Description of the SCIP.

Existing standardized diagnostic interviews (SDIs) were designed for researchers and produce mainly categorical diagnoses. There is an urgent need for a clinician-administered tool that produces dimensional measures, in addition to categorical diagnoses. The Standard for Clinicians' Interview in Psychiatry (SCIP) is a method of assessment of psychopathology for adults. It is designed to be administered by clinicians and includes the SCIP manual and the SCIP interview. Clinicians use the SCIP questions and rate the responses according to the SCIP manual rules. Clinicians use the patient's respo

Does eye-tracking have an effect on economic behavior?

Eye-tracking is becoming an increasingly popular tool for understanding the underlying behavior driving human decisions. However, an important unanswered methodological question is whether the use of an eye-tracking device itself induces changes in participants' behavior. We study this question using eight popular games in experimental economics chosen for their varying levels of theorized susceptibility to social desirability bias. We implement a simple between-subject design where participants are randomly assigned to either a control or an eye-tracking treatment. In seven of the eight games

The impact of unilateral brain damage on anticipatory grip force scaling when lifting everyday objects.

The scaling of our finger forces according to the properties of manipulated objects is an elementary prerequisite of skilled motor behavior. Lesions of the motor-dominant left brain may impair several aspects of motor planning. For example, limb-apraxia, a tool-use disorder after left brain damage is thought to be caused by deficient recall or integration of tool-use knowledge into an action plan. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether left brain damage affects anticipatory force scaling when lifting everyday objects. We examined 26 stroke patients with unilateral brain damage

The Effect of PrEP on HIV Incidence Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in the Context of Condom Use, Treatment as Prevention, and Seroadaptive Practices.

BACKGROUND: HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective tool in preventing HIV infection among high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM). It is unknown how effective PrEP is in the context of other implemented HIV prevention strategies, including condom use, seroadaption, and treatment as prevention (TasP). We evaluate the impact of increasing uptake of PrEP in conjunction with established prevention strategies on HIV incidence in a high-risk population of MSM through simulation. METHODS: Agent-based simulation models representing the sexual behavior of high-risk, urban MSM in the Unit

Nonviolent Discipline Options for Caregivers and Teachers: A Systematic Overview of the Evidence.

Violence against children is a widespread problem with devastating consequences, and corporal punishment is a risk factor for more serious forms of physical abuse. One reason for the persistence of corporal punishment may be the lack of awareness of positive disciplinary alternatives. Nonviolent options offered to caregivers and teachers must be effective in addressing challenging behavior, or they may be rejected in favor of a return to physical punishment. There is an urgent need to determine which discipline options are evidence-supported and what that evidence says so that robust alternati

Longitudinal assessment of cognitive characteristics in Costello syndrome.

Costello syndrome encompasses pre- and postnatal medical problems including polyhydramnios, failure to thrive, cardiac complications, and an increased risk for solid tumors. Hypotonia and developmental delay are typical in infancy, and mental retardation can be diagnosed in older patients. Previous studies on the cognitive development in Costello syndrome relied on clinically diagnosed cases. The recent discovery of heterozygous HRAS mutations allows for molecular confirmation of the clinical diagnoses. We report here on cognitive abilities and adaptive behavior in the first cohort of patients

Further characterization of repetitive behavior in C58 mice: developmental trajectory and effects of environmental enrichment.

Aberrant repetitive behaviors are commonly observed in a variety of neurodevelopmental, neurological, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Little is known about the specific neurobiological mechanisms that underlie such behaviors, however, and effective treatments are lacking. Valid animal models can aid substantially in identifying pathophysiological factors mediating aberrant repetitive behavior and aid in treatment development. The C58 inbred mouse strain is a particularly promising model, and we have further characterized its repetitive behavior phenotype. Compared to C57BL/6 mice, C58 mice exh

Model-assisted marsupialization of a large odontogenic keratocyst in the maxillofacial region using a multicolored 3D-printed model: A novel approach in surgical planning and teaching.

UNLABELLED: 3D printing can improve surgical planning and coordination between the healthcare team and serve as a valuable educational tool for students. ABSTRACT: Although the occurrence of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) in the maxillofacial region is not uncommon, their aggressive growth behavior requires advanced surgical techniques for minimal recurrence. The current case report describes the use of a multicolored 3D-printed model as an interactive visual aid for the surgical planning and management of an OKC treated with a minimally invasive surgical decompression technique.
