Tooth survival after endodontic treatment.

There are several measures that are, or could be, in use in relation to estimating the outcome of endodontic treatments. It is important to reflect on when and why a certain outcome measure is used; when caring for an individual patient it is obvious that the goal always should be a tooth in a healthy state, that is striving to remove any infection and aim for the tooth to have healthy periapical tissues. For patients in general and for society, it is also interesting to know if endodontic treatments will lead to retention of teeth in a functioning state. From epidemiological studies, with hig

[External cervical tooth root resorption].

External cervical tooth root resorption is one of the most aggressive types of pathological resorption. Due to the uncontrolled growth of resorptive tissue, irreversible loss of dentin and cement occurs. To date, there is no common position regarding the etiological factor and pathogenesis of invasive cervical resorption. The histological picture is similar to some fibro-bone lesions. The treatment outcome of the pathology is difficult to predict because elimination of the causative factor is often not sufficient for resorption arrest. Only the complete elimination of resorptive tissue helps t

Tooth root resorption: A review.

Tooth root resorption is multifactorial, leading to progressive destruction and eventual loss of tooth root dentin and cement. There are internal and external types of root resorption, each having its variety. The etiology and pathogenesis of tooth root resorption are poorly understood, and the most significant etiological factors are trauma, pulpal infection, tooth bleaching, and orthodontic treatment. Tooth root resorption is primarily asymptomatic; thus, it is revealed accidentally by radiographic examination. Progressive clinical manifestations are pain, tooth discoloration, tooth mobility

Tooth replacement in early sarcopterygians.

Teeth were an important innovation in vertebrate evolution but basic aspects of early dental evolution remain poorly understood. Teeth differ from other odontode organs, like scales, in their organized, sequential pattern of replacement. However, tooth replacement patterns also vary between the major groups of jawed vertebrates. Although tooth replacement in stem-osteichthyans and extant species has been intensively studied it has been difficult to resolve scenarios for the evolution of osteichthyan tooth replacement because of a dearth of evidence from living and fossil sarcopterygian fishes.

[Tooth erosion - a multidisciplinary approach].

During the last decades, an increasingly greater interest in dental erosion has been observed in clinical dental practice, in dental public health and in dental research because prevalence of erosive tooth wear is still increasing especially in young age group of population. Erosive tooth wear is a multifactorial etiology process characterized by progressive loss of hard dental tissue. It is defined as the exogenous and/or endogenous acids dissolution of the dental tissue, without bacterial involvement. In the development of dental erosive wear, interactions are required which include chemical

Tooth polishing: The current status.

Healthy teeth and gums make a person feel confident and fit. As people go about their daily routines and with different eating and drinking habits, the tooth enamel turns yellowish or gets stained. Polishing traditionally has been associated with the prophylaxis procedure in most dental practices, which patients know and expect. However, with overzealous use of polishing procedure, there is wearing of the superficial tooth structure. This would lead to more accumulation of local deposits. Also, it takes a long time for the formation of the fluoride-rich layer of the tooth again. Hence, now-a-d

Osteoimmunology in orthodontic tooth movement.

The skeletal and immune systems share a multitude of regulatory molecules, including cytokines, receptors, signaling molecules, and signaling transducers, thereby mutually influencing each other. In recent years, several novel insights have been attained that have enhanced our current understanding of the detailed mechanisms of osteoimmunology. In orthodontic tooth movement, immune responses mediated by periodontal tissue under mechanical force induce the generation of inflammatory responses with consequent alveolar bone resorption, and many regulators are involved in this process. In this rev

Esthesioneuroblastoma presenting as tooth pain.

Esthesioneuroblastoma, also called olfactory neuroblastoma, is a rare malignant tumor originating in the olfactory epithelium in the upper nasal cavity with intracranial extension and may also be associated with secondary sinus diseases. Esthesioneuroblastoma has been observed to cause death by distant metastasis or by invasion through the cribriform plate and secondary meningitis. It usually produces nasal obstruction, epistaxis and less commonly anosmia, headache and pain. We report a case of esthesioneuroblastoma in a 50-year-old female who reported with tooth pain as a presenting symptom.

Ridge preservation after tooth extraction.

BACKGROUND: Following tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge will undergo dimensional changes. This change may complicate the subsequent restorative procedure when oral implants are chosen. "Alveolar ridge preservation" has been assessed in various studies. AIM: To evaluate the more recent studies on this topic and to explore new insights under this topic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Animal studies and clinical studies have addressed different techniques. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Implants placed into the fresh extraction sockets do not prevent the resorption of the alveolar bone. Simultaneous guide

Tooth loss and cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic subclinical inflammation may elevate the risk of cognitive impairment. Periodontitis is associated with subclinical inflammation and accounts in part for tooth loss. The hypothesis was tested that periodontitis and tooth loss as a proxy of chronic periodontitis is associated with cognitive impairment in the elderly. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The population-based Study of Health in Pomerania comprises 1336 subjects (60-79 years). Cognitive impairment was assessed with the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Tobit regression analyses were adjusted for potential confounders.

An unerupted tooth?--who nose?

UNLABELLED: Foreign bodies may present to the general dental practitioner, either as a cause of complaint or, more commonly, as an incidental finding during routine examination. This article describes an unusual case where a rhinolith perforated the hard palate to appear in the mouth as an erupting tooth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: It is useful for the general dental practitioner to be aware of the existence of foreign bodies, their sequelae and management.

Stem cells for tooth engineering.

Tooth development results from sequential and reciprocal interactions between the oral epithelium and the underlying neural crest-derived mesenchyme. The generation of dental structures and/or entire teeth in the laboratory depends upon the manipulation of stem cells and requires a synergy of all cellular and molecular events that finally lead to the formation of tooth-specific hard tissues, dentin and enamel. Although mesenchymal stem cells from different origins have been extensively studied in their capacity to form dentin in vitro, information is not yet available concerning the use of epi

Epithelial histogenesis during tooth development.

This paper reviews the current understanding of the progressive changes mediating dental epithelial histogenesis as a basis for future collaborative studies. Tooth development involves morphogenesis, epithelial histogenesis and cell differentiation. The consecutive morphological stages of lamina, bud, cap and bell are also characterized by changes in epithelial histogenesis. Differential cell proliferation rates, apoptosis, and alterations in adhesion and shape lead to the positioning of groups of cells with different functions. During tooth histo-morphogenesis changes occur in basement membra

Mouse models of tooth abnormalities.

Tooth number is abnormal in about 20% of the human population. The most common defect is agenesis of the third molars, followed by loss of the lateral incisors and loss of the second premolars. Tooth loss appears as both a feature of multi-organ syndromes and as a non-syndromic isolated character. Apart from tooth number, abnormalities are also observed in tooth size, shape, and structure. Many of the genes that underlie dental defects have been identified, and several mouse models have been created to allow functional studies to understand, in greater detail, the role of particular genes in t
